Really liked this one. The title is so appropriate. Just about a bodyguard who dreamed and made a decision he wouldn't have otherwise. Throughout the beatings, torture, and murder, there is always the sweet thought of what may have been.
@DQ15 the dude is a brother of goofy gun dealer who byung hun had killed. he tracked byun hyun down after picking up a business card that byun hyun left behind at the office. point of him being there shows no matter how bad mofo byung hyun might be there is always going to be some one who is better.
Can anyone recommend some more movies with Lee Byung-Hun to me? I ADORE his acting, but have only seen him in IRIS, G.I Joe (which he was only in a little ;A; ), and The Good The Bad The Weird. He did an amazing job in all of them, and I want to see more. I hope to see this one soon too. ^^
am not korean, but enjoy watchin korean movies, korean movies are the best and have unique storyline..these are the movies iv seen so far oldboy, daisy, bittersweet life, the chaser, jsa, tale of two sister, i saw the devil, city of violence., teaguki, dirty carnival, sympathy for mr vengeance, THE GOOD THE BAD THE WIED... CAN SOMEONE PLEASE RECOMMEND ME ANOTHER GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH.. KOREAN MOVIES ARE NOT ADVERTISED IN UK U SEE.. THANKS
@humzah0007: uhmm try to watch the LEGEND OF THE 7 CUTTER ( it's freaking hilarious), WHO SLEPT WITH HER, MY BOSS MY TEACHER(japanese version), HE IS COOL.. tell me if you like them..
great film. i gotta mention one of my fav scenes was in the beginning where he finishes his dessert first before he goes downstairs and kicking ass. haha.
One late autumn night, the disciple awoke crying. So the master asked the disciple, "Did you have a nightmare?" "No." "Did you have a sad dream?" "No," said the disciple. "I had a sweet dream." "Then why are you crying so sadly?" The disciple wiped his tears away and quietly answered, "Because the dream I had can't come true."

Damn this director has made some fantastic films, Bittersweet Life, The Good The Bad The Weird, and I Saw The Devil. Wasn't a huge fan of Tale of Two Sisters though. Out of pure bias though. Just not into Grudge-ish or juon-ish fimls.
i watched it so many times yet i feel fresh for the next watch !!! its strange to to see complete dichotomy i.e poetic visuals with action .......amazing
i watched it more than 100 times still i feel fresh for the next watch ... its very rare to see a dichotomy of poetic and violence in one film ........kudos to kim ji woon ............ symphony at the end of this film is so haunting !!!!!!!
What's the name of the song beginning at 0:54? I can't find it on the soundtrack album...4 me it's the best song of the movie, with "romance" of course!
I downloaded a whole album for Taro Hakase but it's not the track titled "Main Theme". Can you provide us with a link or an album title that has this piece, thanks :)
I don't get it - how is this getting mixed reviews from people. I just finished watching it 15 minutes ago...I feel terrible that I had to view this 5 years late. I should have seen this in theaters if it did come to theaters - because it's damn BADASS, POETIC, and BITTERSWEET.
Oh gosh...I loved the beginning and ending of it - those two poetic lines, meant so much throughout the movie. The emotions portrayed by the characters felt so real and human.
@rburst and you sound like a liberal commie college student. we dont take to kindly to u folks round here. u try comin down here to alabama and well gut ya before you cross the border ya chicken shit kid
@shadowpal2 Also, in the beginning he was eating a dessert and in the end he was drinking an espresso which summarized the title in just two scenes. Such a brilliant movie! Loved it!
@chiragatronacious Do your research first before making yourself look like an idiot. Awarapan was a re-make of the Korean movie. Bittersweet Life came out in 2005 whereas Awarapan came out in 2007. Does that make hindi people "talentless"? Hope not... people remake films all the time.
What does it mean that you are white? What is this need to state the colour of your skin. Besides, we are discussing a great movie not debating colour issues. PS I think Asian men are really really really sexy.
did anybody see The Samourai with Alain Delon? A Bittersweet Life has quite a similar tone, and many similarities story-wise. Also, the main actor is gorgeous in both cases
For everyone who's searching for the song that starts at 0:55.Go to google and search Taro Hakase-Main Theme and click on the 6th link (Taro Hakase - The Wandering Princess OST (2003) | New Age Paradise). In there you will find a rapidshare link and you can download the ost which has the song in this trailer everyone's been wanting.Enjoy
Brilliant Film, True masterpiece aswell as A TALE OF TWO SISTERS. The director (Ji-woon Kim) is truely brilliant also (dare I say rivals Chan-wook Park), Just hope a remake never made by hollywood. Byung-hun Lee awsome Korean actor, JSA good preformance aswell.
i actually like asian movies better than hollywood movies because they can make it more interesting and on the edge. You can never predict how the movies are gonna go or what will happen next which is a refreshing change. WHOO TO ASIAN FILMS haha
@Jayblitz2726 You're right especially in this movie, the end is absolutely stunning. l mean who would have thought that it was only.... (SPOILER ALERT) Woo, that was too close. Poeple who read this comment, watch this movie, you won't regret it.
What I came to appreciate about Asian movies is the acting: I'm quite sick of hollywood-style over-the-top performances, what they convey is not real human emotions, it's all so artificial; Asian actors haven't adopted it yet and I hope they never will.
Then again, I might be wrong, I haven't watched that many but this is my first impression
Respect cannot be bought, if you want people to respect you, respect others.....Why hate all filipinos when only one committed one mistake. Is your fellow Canadians perfect??? We never hated anyone, so why hate???
BTW, filipinos are not korean wannabes, they just simply love different races especially Koreans....
Dude, get a grip of yourself. That was so mean..I'm Spanish but I grew half of my life in the Philippines. And I must say, I loved it there..Filipinos commit mistakes but that doesn't mean ones mistake is everybody's mistake. They're undergoing poverty and this is what you give..I pity you not because you commented like that towards innocent people but I pity because you don't seem to know the value of humanity.
@Satisfiedsquall you fucking racist! get the fuck off. you have no place in this world dumbass. look at yourself first in the mirror, the way you talk, it seems you are the real "ugly monkey". idiot lol!
@Satisfiedsquall Wow...im korean but..your a disgrace for saying this racist shit. go wash your mouth with soap til it bleeds you piece of trash. there is no race better than another, its people like you who we dont need on this planet.
well then im sorry for that but i found some of them who was really rude as well. i mean it for the particuler people from philippines not all of them, of course we really do approciate that they like so much about korean,.
top ten korean movies..highly recommended! 1. The Classic 2.A Moment to Remember 3.Windstruck 4.Daddy Long Legs 5.He Was Cool 6.Temptation Of Wolves 7./doremifasolasido 8.a bittersweet life 9. my sassy girl 10.daisy
Great film. It's good that the lead character has a part in G.I. Joe. 'And what was your plan? To run across 3,000 miles of frozen ice? Stupid soldier.'
Can anybody tell me if the piece that starts at 0:55 appears in the movie? I know that it's not on the OST, but maybe they used it though... would be great if some-one knew it! :)
directer kim has tried noir film of asia style. i found out interesting with this film because this kind of genre film was not used to made. and i love the sound track and many sentences from movie, and visual art. everything is so nice...
Love dirty, gritty, rude Korean culture working for positive for once. The movie is great. People just don't realize, Korean culture itself is dirty, gritty and rude. That's why these movies seem so real. The directors don't know anything else.
what the hell you know about korea? you are such a poverty countrey philippines, what a pity boy is here... i have been to philippines as weell to see full of monkey, even though they like korean so much, we ignore monkey family :)
I'm from America. I lived in Korea for 18 months, Japan for 2 years, Philippines for a while. I like to travel. I'm also half Korean by blood. The rest of your comment I don't really understand, sorry. You need to learn the language better.
tangna mu hayupf! di ka namin kailangan dito sa pilipinas! pupunta-punta kayo dito tas lalaitin niyo bansa namin! TANGNANG YAN! monkey? kung monkey kami.... isa ka namang masahol na hayup!
Excuse me, I find your comment very rude. If you say that you ignore 'monkey family', then why did you reply to ephesus' comment?
Also, if you're going to insult my country like that, then you might as well explain to me why there are a lot of Koreans studying and working here. Oh, and please, if you're going to post comments on the Internet, you might as well make sure that your grammar is correct.
No, you're just one person who is wrong. So don't worry too much about your incorrect opinion. Obviously if it was true, there wouldn't be so much Korean Wannabes out there. Besides, i know much more about Korea then you. But definately interesting different opinion. Good try.
Opinions can not, by definition, be wrong. That's why they're called opinions.
Furthermore, i'm definitely (there are no 'a's in definitely) not the only person. Seoul was on lonely planet's travelers' top 3 most disappointing cities. Described "Its an appallingly repetitive sprawl of freeways and Soviet-style concrete apartment buildings, horribly polluted, with no heart or spirit to it. So oppressively bland that the populace is driven to alcoholism."
When I watched for the first time, I thought it's ok movie ... but now this movie is one of my favourite movie. I like the last dialog between the teacher and student, very very meaningful.
this is a GREAT movie. and all you fucking haters cant admit it, JUST because its a movie from Asia, not hollywood. man.. i hate those fucking ignorant fucks :D
Really liked this one. The title is so appropriate. Just about a bodyguard who dreamed and made a decision he wouldn't have otherwise. Throughout the beatings, torture, and murder, there is always the sweet thought of what may have been.

what the hell you know about korea? you are such a poverty countrey philippines, what a pity boy is here... i have been to philippines as weell to see full of monkey, even though they like korean so much, we ignore monkey family :)
kimsean17 2 years ago

Good try.
kashisuke2010 2 years ago
Opinions can not, by definition, be wrong. That's why they're called opinions.
Furthermore, i'm definitely (there are no 'a's in definitely) not the only person. Seoul was on lonely planet's travelers' top 3 most disappointing cities. Described "Its an appallingly repetitive sprawl of freeways and Soviet-style concrete apartment buildings, horribly polluted, with no heart or spirit to it. So oppressively bland that the populace is driven to alcoholism."

Why can't everyone keep their negative opinions to themselves?

When I watched for the first time, I thought it's ok movie ... but now this movie is one of my favourite movie. I like the last dialog between the teacher and student, very very meaningful.

Saw this one, great flick. Kept me glued to my seat until the very end.
The girl reminded me of Shu Qi.
Whatever happened to her? Did she retire or something?

If you're talking about 'Awarapan', that's because it's a ripoff of 'A Bittersweet Life'.

what other good asian movies do you know like old boy for exmaple
abdul398614 2 years ago
A few asian movies I can name off the top of my head are:
Infernal Affairs (The Departed was a remake of this)
Shaolin Soccer
Kung Fu Hustle
Joint Security Area (JSA)
Memories of Murder
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
And then you have all the amazing martial arts movies from Hong Kong and animation from Japan
I guess 'Thirst' and 'Departure' are good too but I haven't seen it yet.
