sorry guys i watched this film and after about 30 mins i fell asleep and as for the leading man DiCaprio when he was in a suit at the beginning of the film it made him look so young like he had borrowed his suit of his dad sorry to be a party pooper
I liked Shutter Island a lot. and i liked DiCaprio in it but i also think he's overrated.
I mean he's a very good actor and very intense in most of his roles. But i just get the feeling he needs to do something different because since Gangs of New York his roles were all very similar.
He's always intense in all his roles. He's always a guy that looks like he's gonna have a heart attack. And I'm just getting sick of that. He should do something different.
Shutter Island was middle-tier Scorsese, I thought. There was none of the sort of mad glee that I expected from the film. It seemed very simple. And it didn't grab me the way his best films do, I can't imagine myself sitting down again and again with Shutter Island the way I do with GoodFellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or even Gangs of New York, which is a wildly underrated film.
Lest we forget, however, that a mediocre Scorsese is worth a fantastic anybody-else.
Kinda agree with most of you guys, just watched Shutter Island yesterday and I liked it, didn't love it. It seemed like this was a movie where Scorsese was kind of coasting along, seemed like anyone could have directed this movie and made it just as good.
Oh and I am with Eric on Gangs of New York, didn't like it the first time, saw it again and man, I loved the hell out of it...except Cameron Diaz, she still brings it down
Finally saw SHUTTER ISLAND. I thought it was pretty good (very creepy moments). My only real beef with it is that it went on a little too long, and the revelation at the finale was a little too Beautiful Mind-esque, but it's still a shocking scene.
i'll see it, but prefer his earlier films. recent ones shiny, less edgy. better than most anyone else's stuff of course,Bill the Butcher is amazing. can't bear The Departed, they're all such idiots. i'm not one of these people who say diCaprio can't act,or that he is too kitten-faced and cutesy-looking to be in grownup films anyway, but he is not deNiro. other one even worse, what his name?Scorsese must have been taking a nap while they were casting that one. well anyway,dadada--thanks you, sehr gut.
Love the fact you guys do the odd review show on just one film. I actually prefer the half our length as opposed to the 10 min reviews.
I thought Shutter Island was decent but I have to say I was a little disappointed. Technically, it is beautifully shot but I felt that it really dragged in the middle and that it wasn't nearly as gripping as some of his other efforts.
It was like scorsese was on Auto pilot, but then he's still better than msot directors when like that. Dicaprio was excellent.
I'm actually setting up a review called The Leo Scorsese trilogy, where I review GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE AVIATOR, and THE DEPARTED. I've yet to see SHUTTER ISLAND yet, but I look forward to seeing it. Great review, as always, guys.
This is one of my favorite cinefiles episodes. I love all scorsese movies you mentioned. and I think its absolutely hilarious how you get way off topic in the last five minutes.

Shutter Island is fantastically filmed, directed, and acted, and I couldn't ask for much more in a thriller

The movie, though being very well executed, was too conventional.

That was awesome, but Michael forgot to do his impression of Billy Drago: "I WANT TO SEX WITH YOU"

Please do a Klaus Kinski episode or Werner Herzog as they're best work was together.
