It's just like oil, we're storing up energy reserves for future generations. Warmer earth = more energy. Carbon can be burned so if we put enough of it in the air we can burn the air, and that will give *lots* of energy. When the energy is deep in the ground it's hard to get to and use, so clearly we're helping the less developed world by making carbon (an energy source) much more easily accessible (it's so plentiful they can breathe it!)
fastfashn, oceans of oil do not exist! In fact, if all the oil that was discovered and used, is around now, and will be around in the future were spread evenly across the surface of our planet, its depth would be hardly more than a spark plug gap. But this video does indeed promote the life aspects of CO2 without counting the damaging aspects, such as global warming. Not only that, but polluting sources such as coal involve destroying mountains and other polluting activites.
As with anything, dear CEI, anything in too large a quantity is a bad thing. You can swim in the ocean, but do you want salt water in fields of corn? You can eat at McDees, but not every day. We are burning OCEANS of oil to make our cars run, and dumping the gasses into the atmo. IS THAT GOOD?!
These guys can't be serious! Must be same sort of institute that informed smokers there was nothing to worry about for years, and the same people that shut down the development of the electric car in the 90's. Wake up people, the planet needs our help and this is shameless propaganda probably paid for by the worlds oil companies.....
It's not quite alleged anymore. This isn't the 80's.
Anyway, this was absolutely hilarious. Republicans are the stupidest fucking people on the planet. I can't wait till you inbreed yourselves into pigform.
Too much CO2 dissolved into the ocean will increase acidity so much that most mollusks, corals, and arthropods won't be able to form shells >> coral reefs die >>krill die >> fisheries collapse >> ocean becomes desolate and empty >> LIFE!!
From whatsupwiththatDOTcom: "There seems to be no shortage of theories about how rising CO2 levels will destroy the planet, yet the geological record shows that life flourished for hundreds of millions of years with much higher CO2 levels and temperatures." Corals fluorished during the Ordovician Era, when atmospheric CO2 levels were about 10X greater than they are today. Coral reefs are in trouble from pesticide and fertilizer runoff, and sewage sludge. CO2 is the least of their problems.
You should still keep in mind that rapid climate change is usually followed by mass extinctions. Also the number one threat to coral right now isn't water pollution, but bleaching, which occurs when the water gets too warm.
AFAIK, during the last interglacial warm period, Arctic temps were higher and polar bears survived. Coral bleaching? That's a normal adaptation mechanism. Algae living on corals give them their color. If the local environment changes, one set of species of algae leaves and another, which likes the new conditions, replaces it. The period between the different species of algae taking up residence is what makes the corals look white. This partly explains why corals have endured for millennia.

CO2 is a gas of life every bit as much as oxygen. FACT: Almost every plant on this planet grows faster and healthier with MORE CO2 .. not less. So people who want less CO2 call themselves 'green'? BS! The average PPM of CO2 on earth over 100's millions of years was FAR HIGHER than now. To plants, right now the climate is CO2 IMPOVERISHED. One more fact that enviro nitwits cannot reconcile is, if human CO2 causes warming, WHY has earth cooled since 1998 while CO2 has kept rising?
Hey would it be possible for me to acquire the resources you used to formulate this comment? I am in 100% agreement with you, and am just collaborating all of my resources. Would it be possible for you to send me URLs or something?
It's true you cannot see it. It is a colourless odourless gas, the waste product of respiration. Put a plastic bag over your head and discover the life given by CO2...or run your lawnmower in a garage - carbon monoxide is even more exciting.
Couldn't this evolve into a medium for debate? If you really want to make a point of how you agree or disagree with this, how about providing links to websites with objective scientific data to substantiate or refute the argument? It's amazing how strongly opinionated each side of this argument is while basically assuming that they're right and the opposition is comprised solely of idiots. My opinion: "I DON'T KNOW."
No. The public debate is not fact driven, it is opinion driven. e.g. Volcanoes release more CO2 than all of mankind(Less than 1% on average on the top end of USGS data.). Easily checkable, demonstrably false but it simply does not matter.
Oh and btw, here is my subtle message to CEI: May you rot and burn in hell, but, before that, when you arrive in hell, may satan himself spit in your face. Sincerely. - csh150
You know what would be funny? Imagine we could duplicate earth in it's current state, so that there are two, and that we could move all George Bushes, anti-environmentalist republicans, war seeking white-house-controlling oil barons and especially all these CEI retards to this second earth and let them do whatever they like, saving the other planet earth for environmentalists, left-wing democrats and the like. After 100 years, I wonder how bad the 'republican' earth is messed up.
...and guess who pays the salary of the "skeptics" over at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (who makes this propaganda)? ExxonMobil of course! world's biggest, most powerful company.
Search "Out of Balance" to check out a youtube trailer for a upcomming documentary on ExxonMobil's impact on climate change
I find this video fairly ironic in another sense too. It is as if they are claiming that because there is a benefit to the consumption of fossil fuels, it should not be considered a polutant. That would be like saying, "Nuclear power suplies jobs and fuel to people and industry. Now politicials are claiming is is radioactive and that radiation can kill. They call it lethal, we call it life." The same analogy. Just a twist of logic. Using one thing to mean another.
sn't it a biological fact, taught to most elementary school students, that Carbon dioxide is the waste product of human metabolism?Key word being waste product. We breathe it out, then trees breathe it in.A Pollutant is defined by Dictionary.com as:"Something that pollutes, especially a waste material that contaminates air, soil, or water."so anything that is a waste material, even if produced naturally,is released in excess it becomes toxic to life and is then considered a pollutant.
"Now, some politicians want to label carbon dioxide a pollutant."
Because those politicians are running an anti-breathing campaign! Thanks for the heads-up, CEI! Next time a politician tells me that breathing is a bad idea, I'll empty my Aerosol spray cans in his face!
you dont need carbon dioxide to breath too much will suffocate u. oxygen is what u need 2 breathe not carbon dioxide. How can u listen to an ad funded by the worlds bigest oil company.
What they meant to say was, "Let's keep producing shit that will kill us to have things we don't need to survive". The choice is between unneccesary luxuries and life. It's as simple as that.
I hope the people behind this video got paid well and sleep real good at night.
Should I shoot myself now? Crazy that people are influenced by this commercial.
