  • Saw her live ..solo..in Toronro Dec 3, @ The Drake Hotel Underground..this song gave me goosebumps..great person..she posed 4 pics..and signed her cd;s....great post..

  • reminds me of kurt cobain's version. that's probably why i like it so much.

  • Wow, Nicole Atkins, lets meet for coffee and then get married!

  • With a century of history, why would anyone just do a lame copy of the Nirvana version / arrangement? Solos were lame too. How did this get into SXSW? Thought that was about quality.

  • you see. thats talent. courtney love has nothing on this! (plus courtney's top hit was not even writen by her)

  • why is she so much older than me! i mean, i know i dont have a chance but still why?!! pero, por que!?!?

  • wow she sounds exactly like hayley

  • I'd really like to see Aja Volkman (Nico Vega) sing a rendition of this song.

  • It's just not the same I miss Kurt

  • If she wasn't on the stage

I mean if it was a home made amateur cover

    I would say thats amazing

    But now, it's not

  • check my version THANKS! watch?v=oa9LQ8lhUDY

  • E major chord kinda ruins it

  • @baksteen123 It makes it folkier

  • Dis-like, and don't get me wrong, I like Nicole Atkins. It's just that in this song she sounds sort of douchy... maybe it's that her voice just doesn't sound authentic sing this song, I'm not sure what it is. Either way, I'm still a fan of Nicole's, I just hate her cover of this song...

  • my girl or my boy...............why shes not sing my girl......the song not even a gay song...its a story

  • hmmm, what is my opinion? ........oh right, i lke it!

  • it would have been better if she said my girl but she was probly like no i dont want peoplethinking im a lesbain... hahah

  • @Robotcam I agree. It would've been way better if she had just said girl.

  • @Sivadomagyar yea it would

  • This is such a great cover! I'm sure Leadbelly and Cobain were upstairs smiling during this performance. Great voice, too!

  • @IsEverybodyHappyMov Uh, yeah, probably not...

  • awesome my girl :-)

  • I'm in love ;D

  • Just to let you guys know her new album Mondo Amore got moved to a Feb 8th release date but you can still pre order it off itunes!! Can't wait!

  • I'd like to take Nicole Atkins out for a nice dinner with thoughtful conversation IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

  • Nicole Atkins is so so talented....Her new album "Mondo Amore" hits stores Jan 18th....It's going to be AWESOME!!!

  • OMG Nicole I have listened to your version of this song probably 100 times and made everyone I know listen. I LOVE your rendition so much it gives me chills when I hear it. I loved you before I saw this, but now you're solid in my musical repertoire ... Keep up the good work, and COME TO CHARLOTTE!

  • "We're doing a full electric Rock Set, Rock and Roll" I love you nicole 0:31

  • She gives me goose bumps... (in a good way)

  • i cant even explain how much i LOVE this version!!! by that last verse where shes yell/singing, im in love, too perfect. janis joplin-esque. great job, i got chills. :)

  • Fucking amazing live.

  • the lead guitar works very well here

  • Best version is 1971 Long John Baldry's version from the It Ain't Easy album which isn't available on You Tube but is in my head.

  • I might be wrong but i believe this and Nirvana's version are mostly covering the Huddie Leadbetter "Lead Belly" version. Honestly i rate this one way above the Nirvana one. tho i think Lead Belly just beats this a wee bit!! only a wee bit though.

  • @BlakeWallington Thanks for the history of this song. Nice to know.

  • she played that really good right on key

  • shes hot.

  • HEYY :DDD NICE

    WATCH

    watch?v=eDtVvMPOkSI

  • Nirvana's version was way stronger and powerful if you know what I mean

  • i love the last part with her powerful voice!!!! greez from austria ;)

  • This is a great piece of American Blues music and Atkins does a fantastic job!. Jeez - what a voice!

  • not to be sexist but this song is definitely not made to be sung by a woman, it just doesn't have that gritty feel to it. this song is about murder

  • @m0nsters0fthedeep i think regardless of that she does it justice. heehee women can murder too u know!!

  • That voice should be jailed for being too damn nice!! .. my god this must be what its like too listen too angels

  • Good, but she should have done it here way, rather than puting on Leadbelly's accent.

  • Omfg she's great and sexy

  • nice, but not near as powerful and emotional as the nirvana version

  • I can't stop listening to and loving Nicole Atkin's rendition of this song. And I love her powerful, Robert-Plant-esque ending. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing.

  • @superpea1

can't say yes enough to your statement. I love women shouting out their heartfelt rage.

  • This song is a folk song, sung by many different singers, modified into a few variations and renditions. The tempo, the style, lyrics, even the title, have always been, and are, up for dramatic interpretation. You don't have to like it. But, respect the fact that Nicole has her own version of this song ~ she is after all, an artist. While her name will likely never be instantly synonymous with this song (as Kurt's was), she has, in her way, made it her own. Well Done, Nicole.

  • well said

  • Thank you.

  • I am with ElYanMan on this one. If people didnt cover the tune, including the famous Nirvana version- this song would be yet undiscovered and experienced by MANY people.. which would be a damn shame. It is too powerful of a song not to be played and shared with many younger generations.

  • My boy? Why she haven't followed the original lyrics?

  • I know that pissed me off when I heard it!

  • There are a lot of different versions of this song (also three different titles). It was written in the 1800s by an unknown artist and covered mostly by old time bluegrass/folk artists in the early/mid 1900s. Most notably, in my opinion, is The Louvin Brothers - In The Pines (they also have different lyrics).

It's a song to be covered and played with the emotion the artist has.

Nicole Atkins did a good job.

  • its done by leadbelly originally

  • This song was written in the 1870s (according to my Louvin Brothers DVD; a group that covered it also in the 1950s).

This song was not written by Leadbelly and he sure didn't cover it first. Nirvana popularized the song and also popularized the fact that they heard it by Leadbelly. They did not say he wrote it, just that they covered his version. Who knows, maybe they thought he wrote it, but I'm 100% sure it was written by someone in the late 1800s.

  • There really aren't any set lyrics for this song. A lot of different artists have covered it, going all the way back to the 1800s and there are different ways to sing the lyrics in most.

  • If you listen to this as an individual song and doesn´t compare it with the lengedary version by Nirvana it´t a pretty good performance! No one can sing this song with such feeling ast Curt did, no one! But Nicole has a great voice, 3.34-4.10 is absolutly great!!! Youtube is awsome!!!!

  • Well, it's interesting you're such an advocate for "Curt" when you can't even spell his f*cking name right.

  • Its a Lead Belly song people, not to be a dick, but on your precious MTV Unplugged with Nirvana Kurt goes into a whole tangent about wanting to buy an old Lead Belly guitar at an auction.

Does no one pay attention. It is a cool version of the song, Nirvanas was too and Lead Belly's was King so give it a rest. Music can and should be covered or we wouldn't even be talking about the late great Lead Belly!

  • Loretta Lynn signs it best in her movie - coal miners daughter. But your right

  • wasn't necessary to change to my boy

    good cover tho

  • 4:30 to 4:34 is awesome. cuuute smile! This is wonderful overall :)

  • Its pretty obvious by the screaming that she's trying to do it nirvana-style.

  • why do girls change lyrics Fucking Stupid

  • good version of a hard song made easy by Kurt ,Leadbelly's tuneing on the 12 string was a baritore tuneing B E A D F# B and had a lot of walk ups all are cool wish leadbelly had a electric 12 string and a amp with petals

  • i like the girllllllllll. I'm just a dreamer :))))))

  • great cover, slower but great.

  • I hate how she sings "My boy", ridiculous.

  • I WISH I slept with NICOLE!!!

  • echt cool gespielt, aber ich glaube zu solchen liedern passen nur männerstimmen..

  • Not too bad, but I think 'my boy' wrecks it, but then I'm particularly partial to Cobain's version :P

  • Very good but not amazing, definately the best female version on youtube I've heard.

  • hole's version is better in my opinion...but I love grunge ;)

  • I can't stand Hole and Courtney Love in general, my favorite version of all is Nirvana and I'm fore sure a grunge lover too.

  • I can't say I like Courtney Love either, I just love the music she makes.

  • Just so you know this is not grunge

this is BLUES just because nirvana covered it doesnt make it grunge, it was originally by leadbelly

  • Yeah, I know. But I still prefer the grunge version ;)

  • The Nirvana Version is no Grunge!!!

Not every Beatles Song is Beat, and not every Nirvana Song is Grunge. And the Nirvana Version of Where did You Sleep Last Night do only have a little touch of grunge (in the way of singing it), but it's still no Grunge.

  • Give me a break. Kurt Cobain/Nirvana = Grunge

  • Yes, but in no version this song is grunge.

  • that's because this song wasn't made by nirvana. All songs made by Nirvana, not just perfomed by nirvana are grunge. The man who sold the world is by david bowie.

  • I know. But About A Girl for Example isn't really Grunge. It's a little bit like a lot of songs of the 60ties, only with a louder guitar sound.

  • about a girl isn't made by nirvana. It's a 19th century folk song performed also by Leadbelly and Dolly Parton way before nirvana was founded

  • ?!?!??!

I hope that's a joke, 'cause obviously About A Girl is not a folk song.

Where did you sleep last night, is a folk song, and was performed before by Leadbelly and others.. but About A Girl is a song written by Kurt Cobain, and every fan of this band should know that.

  • the root of this song goes deeper than leadbelly... it is a 1870's folk song no one knows the true author

  • this wasn't original by leadbelly, it's an old folksong!

  • wonderful job, you have a beautiful voice, it was well suited for this song

  • this is one of my all time favorite songs. hate to admit i only heard of it through nirvana but whenever anybody does it i love it. Except for if britany spears did it.

  • fuck you all, can't say anything positive about shit, just have to be nay sayer, she did a fantastic job.

  • she just had to f*ck it up by saying "my boy" oh well.

  • paia demais

  • ehh

  • this is insulting

  • Comment removed

  • that was beautiful! the end was perfect!!

  • it's supposed to sound folkish/bluesy man. listen to the Leadbelly version.

  • It sounds very folk-ish or country, and i just really don't think that works

  • this is such an unbelievably uninformed comment, it drives me crazy

  • Best version of this song I've heard. her voice!

  • That waz painful

  • Great video, good cover, beautiful voices. She have a very strong voice. I love it

  • She did a great job on covering LB. Nice work, Nicole.

  • shes my new fave even tho i think shes been around abit. very powerful-love it

  • She is Fing beautiful!!! WOW I am in love!!!!!

  • I wouldn't care if she drooled on the microphone for half an hour-- as soon as she starts singing, I forgive her for anything. :)

  • She rolls her voice so nice, its beautiful.

  • her voice is amazing !

  • Forced vibrato never sounds good.

    Good cover, though.

  • how can you tell its forced vibrato?

  • she tried to do the 'shiver' part like kurt but failed a bit

  • shes actually good...

  • i dont know what is wrong with most of you, this is a great cover. your criticism is kinda lame. i mean she definatly feels a little flakey in the intro but the cover was great. great voice great cover.

however, kurt cobain's version is great. more "true" emotion. she can sing extremely well, but she fakes her emotion.

  • how can you say she fakes her emotion. you are a fucking idiot. all of the comments for this video are fucking stupid.

  • she appears fake, if i feel i dont have a connection let me speak my opinion. if you dont like it, mind your business. d-bag.

  • if you don't have a connection then turn the fucking song off. noone wants to hear your opinion. if you don't enjoy it then keep to yourself and listen to leadbelly's or nirvana's version.

  • if this site was established for the purpose of viewing only then im fairly certain that they would disable commenting. my opinion is my own, if i wish to express guess what?, i have the freedom to. i checked out a cover, didnt like something about it, and commented. i wasnt rude or ignorant. i said she has a good voice but her emotion is not there. like ive stated before, this website is built around the viewing/commenting mechanism. if YOU dont like, piss off.

  • yer fuckin stupid. if u dont have nothing nice to say than shut yer ass up and go suck on a crack pipe.

  • Really?

You have your opinion, but she turned a wrench in my soul.

  • if you like it, then great. and if it moves you then great. i was just expressing my opinion and that dbag felt like he needed to insult me.

  • it doesnt really matter but this version is pretty much all nirvanas interpretation. nicole opts not to use the little 'walkdown' guitar motif that features in leadbellys version just like kurt left out. the phrasing of the lyrics also mirrors kurts delivery rather than leadbelly's which is quite different. its all good but personally i reckon nirvanas version is the best

  • every one is sexist, some people just think there beter than other people, it has nothing to do with that, i just dont buy buy it, and dont like it, coming from her, shes has tallent yes, but that dosnt mean she should be singing that.

  • if she makes it sound cool whats the problem

  • Girls like her are incredibly talented, but you know fantasizes about sleeping with Kurt. Which is fine, of course. Great version of the song.

  • vibratto ftw

  • girl + talent + guitar = the sexiest thing ever

  • she has a great voice. good cover. :D

  • man if a girl sang and played this to me i woould break down, way to go nicole

  • i dont know if this has already been said. but shes like a female jonny cash, vocally speaking, very nice :)

  • wonderfull voice!!! very good!!!

  • nice voice!

  • people are stupid

  • who gives a shit who wrote it! The girl has music in her veins. Not since I first heard Buffy Sainte-Marie way back in '71 have I come across a singer with such depth. God bless you Nicole..

  • I think its a nice cover of nirvana though

  • i know i dont like hate comments and im being a HUGE hypocrite, but she MUTILATED the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant believe a person would do something like that! im a girl and even when i play it on my guitar i sing it with "my girl, my girl"!!!

  • just listen to folk and blues music. people have been doing that for the better half of the past 2 centuries. I think she did spectacualr, but maybe you just haven't much folk or blues. check it out.

  • True but she was covering it from Nirvana so its kind of dumb

  • how do you figure that?

and what's dumb? ... besides you comment.

  • Its dumb that your saying this cause it irrelevant because she cover Nirvana, Nirvana made this song famous to alot of people and if you listen to the way Nirvana cover it you can see she covering it by nirvana i mean the point is she cover it well and thats the end of it

  • Actually, if you listen to the original, you can tell that she's using the vibrato in her voice that Leadbelly used. While the instrumental guitar might have been inspired Nirvana, I don't think it's a complete Nirvana cover. She's not trying to sing like Kurt here. She sounds more like Leadbelly.

  • The ending of the song is exactly how Kurt sung it, which is different from Leadbelly's version, and the whole arrangement is based on Nirvana's from the "Unplugged" session. So yes, she is covering Nirvana's version.

  • I totally disagree. I wouldn't say this is just a cover of Nirvana's rendition. There's obvious and apparent influences from Kurt's and Leadbelly's version. I'd say it's a cover that has influences from the original and Nirvana's cover. Now, of course, whether we agree or not with each other, it doesn't matter. Because the truth of the matter is, we'll never know, unless we ask this band.

  • I'd say it's far more Nirvana I mean the bit where she's practically shouting it and does that odd thing cobain does even, that entire bit isn't in Lead Belly's. To be honest though this is the wrong gig to be doing this song it's meant to be heart felt this just seems like showing off. The only person I've really seen do Nirvana's well is Nirvana. xXx

  • it's a folk song.

    Kurt Cobain diddn't write it.

Leadbelly was given credit for it, but it's over a hundred years old. read up.

  • oops that didnt go in reply lol

  • Leadbelly would be so ashamed. The way she changed the words too - there's a reason the words ARE they way they ARE... listen to the words. This song has been mutiliated past recognition.

  • wow .. she's wicked

  • Can anyone send me a version of this song?

  • her voice is good. but as a nirvana fan, of coz i think kurt cobain sings much better

  • First off I have to say that Kurt straight stole his version including the screaming fourth verse from Mark Lanegan...with that being said no one knows who wrote the song, I imagine someone who had someone close to them decapitated by a train. The song was also known as "Black girl" or "gal", and "in the pines".....and so so so many people have recorded and played it through the years and lead belly was the first to record it. No one has rights to this song.

  • If you're going to rant, at least get your facts right.

He even played with Mark on the version that he did.

  • Ok well I never said that he didn't...I know he played guitar on mark's version(who showed him the song) And guess what listen to marks version from the 80's and everything is the same including the fourth verse screaming, and the key it was played in!!!!!!...So I didn't say anything that wasn't true! And Nirvana SUCKS!!!!

  • This is a Led Better song. She has a lounge singer's voice... not blues or rock enough for this song - great voice nonetheless.

    -Niloy

  • leadbelly vs nirvana vs nicole atkins

  • I meant to say Leadbelly - my bad.

  • My god, she is amazing.

  • i found a much better version of this song from the user robertmaxwellproduce .

    IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

  • leadbelly bro

  • its not by lead belly the author is unknown. lead belly was the first one to have a hit with it. the song is also known as "in the pines"

  • and black girl

  • LeadBeally.

  • noooooooo MY BOY?.?.? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!.!.!.!.!

  • oh awesome! her voice is great!
