  • One of my Janis Ian favorites. WHAT A SONG!

  • nothing more sad, sweet and true , jus Janis Ian oh my God.

  • Between the lines the best album.

  • she is a fantastic human being,, i can feel it in her voice.. she is so warm and so talented.. Thank you Miss Ian.. from the bottom of my heart !!Hope that life is sweet to you !

  • I saw Janis Ian on The Old Grey Whistle Test on tv back in 1976 - loved her so bought the album Between the Lines - I've still got the original album (vinyl) - and still play it regularly - love it to bits!

  • Janis Ian was the one who spoke to me more than anyone else. I was 17 when this album came out.

  • I just love this song.... So real... So raw...

  • Sings the truth. I had my 14 year old listen to at seventeen. Let her know she isn't alone.

  • Anyone else think this heavily influenced Crystal Gayle's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"?

  • @dogkelp I think it's the other way around - this album was two years before Crystal Gayle's. But I see what you mean.

I'm so glad to find this here on youtube, it's one of my top ten favourite songs, ever. :)

  • Gosh I always loved this song. Makes you want tolay across a piano in a slinky dress :)

  • such a cool song, i used to manage a niteclub in vegas some years back and our piano singer would always sing this song i love it..janis ian is so underated as a performer and singer what a smooth talent.

  • One of the truly great songs. Thanks. Beautiful

  • Janis laid down such a beautiful and hearbreaking lyric on this song it's easy for it to slip past you what a stunning jazz number it is, it ranks right up there with the great classic blues/bar songs, and the orchestration of the horns and the piano are masterful. No one should miss it, this is one of those "great American songs" albeit a bit of a tragic one. Masterpiece, once you have heard it you never forget it.

  • reminds me of a working girl with a few too many years on her at the bar with her cocktail.

  • That's more or less the idea. A sad story but not an unknown one.

  • Love this song. It is interesting that on the sheet music

Janis specifys Bright Lights and Promises be performed only by piano. I looked for this a year ago and was disappointed it was not on YouTube....so happy to discover it here a few days ago. Thanks Samshazel! H.

  • This is a very very beautiful song, I just LOVE the piano on it. However instead of bright lights it makes me think of candlelit evenings at home!

  • Always been one of my favorites! Love Janice Ian...ever since I was a little girl.

  • Great song thanks for sharing this video :)
