@Bartholemew2 yea I guess so, 'to-may-to' 'to-maw-to' right? Still sounds silly to say gooey tho :-\ tho ppl do say 'squell' for SQL. That's fine in a small group using the term often enough amongst themselves, but in public or meetings... hmm.
@Bartholemew2 I don't think so; I've used and heard it pronounced "g-u-i" since i first touched a keyboard back in '92. It's a callow presentation of yourself in IT and downright silly, especially since it's not an acronym to begin with - you don't try to pronounce HTML, BSoD, KGB or UFO do you? Try saying "gooey" in a morning meeting, you're gonna turn some heads ;) lol
And I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to have the motor skill to say g-u-i just fine without twisting my tongue =P
@Solidox2k Well, you obviosly dont pronounce those, hutmmml? B-sod? suquell? gui just makes sense. you may think it sounds "retarded" but i guess people you are with dont say it that way. its just like how people speak different in different places. i have never heard g-u-i and you have never heard gooey. if you hear another language, it just sounds funny. same thing.
I hate how everyone says Microsoft "stole" ideas for Vista (and 7) from Apple. SO what those people are saying is that because Apple put those things like Widgets and Spotlight in OSX, Microsoft can't put ANYTHING like that into Vista or 7. Think about it. It's like saying Fruit Loops can't be in circles because they stole the shape from Cheerios.
well widows was the first to run 64-bit and windows 7 blows os X away also all those blue screens are from 3rd party software not the operating system. also did you know that there were tablets by hp before the ipad? and maybe you should stop running illegal prgrams that cause blue screens
i actually more crashes on Windows XP, Vista and 7 than i had on DOS based Windows. But back than i was a kid and i used computer only for games, i didn't have internet(on my computer, dad had it) or any internet downloaded stuff. Windows 95 never crashed on me, but i guess if i used it for anything else than games it would. Hehe i had less crashes on W95 than i had on W7.
@harleykman XP is great, I stopped using windows since, my only concern is that it's getting older and older and support should go out the window soon.
Linux almost never crashes. If a program freezes, just close it! if the system freezes, just push Ctr+Alt+Backspace to do a soft restart which gets you up and running again in under 5s.
Most linux distros now include "repositories" where you can select programs that you want to have and then the built in package manager will then install the program for you.
Ha did anyone actually read the BSOD screen? Lol at the System dump part, I have always thought the same thing when I see it (like every three years...)
unfortunately that is not true. As has been proven. I have never has a bsod, while my friend has had not 1, nor 2, but 36 black screens on his mac, and he has only had it a year
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
unfortunately for them.
the main reason why i switched to mac is that it freakin crashes a lot. and its SLOOOOOOOOW.
so, you dont even have a mac yourself, you dont know how much difference it has. ive been using PC for 10 years. mac is the only one i was glad my money spent was worth every penny.
hahaha did anybody take the time to read the blue screen? pretty fuckin funny

Xerox - made the GUI
Apple- Stole the GUI from Xerox
Microsoft- Stole the GUI from Apple.
If Microsoft hadn't do this, then Apple would have been the infamous bad guys.

Windows NT variants (XP, Vista, 7) are remarkably stable, but the non-NT releases ike Windows 3, 95, 98, and m.e. were notoriously crashprone.

@simon1234simon I still use Win98 on my laptop, and it crashes a lot due to multitasking programs interfering with one another & hanging the OS
.
In contrast I have my XP machine (NT5.1) running nonstop for weeks. It can handle a crashed program without freezing the whole OS

Then again, you need a working knowledge of the command line in order to install something...

The GUI part...I don't understand. Was Xerox like apart of Windows or something? Explain please, thanks lol
chrisybwell 3 years ago
Xerox designed one of the first graphical user interfaces in their R&D divisions but shut it down because they're a photocopy machine company.
The facts may be shakey - all I got is "The Pirates of Silicon Valley" ;)

So it has nothing to do with Microsoft? Only the fact that Apple stole their interface?
Thanks James, amazingly quick response BTW!
chrisybwell 3 years ago
Well, if you think that Microsoft Windows was "inspired" by Mac OS, then Mac OS was "inspired" by the Xerox GUI.
