  • Just played this 2 hours ago under the direction of the composer. Not an easy piece I'll say that much.

  • I love this piece

  • I wish I could play my Clarinet like that.

  • van benne egy pár gikszer az elején rezesek :D

  • Played this in high school, by far the most difficult piece I've ever played, I played 1st trombone as a sophomore, and it took me a while to get the stamina to finish the song strong like you should

  • The video stopped at "0:38" , what's wrong?

  • @c56242 It didn't stop for me. It's probably just a glitch - try refreshing. :)

  • The bassoon part on this (like majority of the woodwinds) is brutal! I remember having only 2-3 weeks worth of experience with my bassoon when my band instructor handed the part to me. I think my reaction was thinking that this was obviously a typo, meant for the clarinets or flutes, and handing it back. lol, it was hard to learn, and I still can't play all of it! But the oboe/piano solo/duet in the middle of the piece is AMAZING. I'll never regret playing this :)

  • We got to the rubbing of the timpani today and it was pretty interesting. LOL. It didn't really work the first couple times.

  • My school is playing this :) We got selected as best HS band in the state so we're playing it along with 7 other songs in the capital in May. It's our closer :)

  • my friend and i cam up with a little play to go along with this song so whenever we play this song we do the actions its great i love this song so much

  • i love this song so much! but insted of oboe we have a soprano sax playing. it doesnt sound nearly as good as this. and our timpani part doesnt sound like that! :P

  • I loved the song and our band just played this. My only skepticism is that the oboe solo in the whale song should be slower it felt rushed to me.

  • @Uberness178 i agree...... it felt way to fast. When my band camp played this it was slowed down a lot

  • Percussionists are the best in this song, considering I am one and I love playing this song....

  • I played the timpani, and it was so awesome...

  • i play the solo for this in my band, any suggestions on it? its a great solo, just a really fast tempo and difficult compared to pieces i played before this one.

  • すごく綺麗で素敵です!

  • i play First tenor...Some Parts of this song were Brutal

  • i played 1st trumpet on this piece it was so awesome robert w smith is the man!!!!!

  • I love the oboe solo around 4:00... and I don't even play oboe!

  • played 1st clarinet on this piece. amazed i don't have arthritis yet.

  • @sidebforever2010 hahahah me too! this piece was really fun to play though haha

  • I play 1st Bass Clarinet in my Middle School band and I'm utterly swamped with the crazy triplets, but it's still a fun piece in the 2nd movement.

  • i wish i could go back to gr nine when i first played this piece...it made me truly fall in love with music

  • I was 1st Trombone when I played this...This is one of the most memorable songs I ever played in my high school Symphonic Band. When it came time to perform this piece, I practically memorized my part because I practiced it ALL the time...I couldn't get enough of it, and even now, 2 years later, I still LOVE it! :)

  • i played 1st horn in Idyllwild this Summer! this was my favorite song we played! i love it! solo is beautiful and the soli is heroic and majestic!

  • Me and our wind band played this today. Thank God I'm a trombonist.

  • this song makes me wanna say- ARGGG EEE MATE! THAR SHE BLOWS! lols.

  • I played this with the Kern County High School Honor Band! This was my favorite song we played. I played second Baritone Sax! I loved the sax part. The French Horns sols is AMAZING!!!!

  • This isn't a brass band... I can tell from the vast numbers of woodwind instruments being played.

Still an awesome performance and a cool piece of music ^_^

  • 122 section is a bit hard to French Horn.

Thumbs up if you think I'm right.

BTW 122 section is Racing The Yankee Clipper.

  • Wish i can B a Sailor , , ,

  • Really amazing performance. Great Job!

  • My marching band did this for their show this year! I have to admit the horn parts for the concert version are waaayyyy better! :)

  • wonderful!!!

  • My favorite song we're playing in band right now :). Such an amazing song.

  • this groups octaves were horrible they didnt even hit the high note at one point on french horn WACKED OUT MAN!

  • this song is AMAZING!

  • figata

  • i love this song were doing it in march for our festival of winds!!

  • Robert W. Smith also did Africa. That is another really good piece you all need to look that up!

  • @MePotatoe92 Best piece of music....ever! We played that with the Boston Brass, and the one guy didn't know when to stop "tribal screaming" so....he continued into the rest xD

  • I love this song so much! I am so glad I get to play it for Honor Band. This is my favorite song!!! Go bari Sax

  • at 4:18 it sounds as if there could be an orchestra! it would sound so much better!!!

  • our band is playing this...and our band sucks.

but our teacher thinks we can play.

    i LOVE it.

  • I've gotta play this in band this year ^-^ Great song

  • this was a tryout piece for us. im in high school in the 'better" band. lets just say even 3rd clarinet is hard in the beggining and end. the whale song part is really nice though.

  • what's up with the whale in the background

  • Well "DUH" Songs Of Sailor And SEA !!!

  • stfu

  • Nice mouth !

  • Nice !

  • @Kduceee :P

  • @Kduceee its MUSIC!!~~

  • it's a sound effect- there's someone rubbing their finger on a timpani to do it. cool huh?!? i love it, makes it sounds way more realistic.

  • @ilovegodandmusic The timpani head is actually sprayed down with water to create a better resistance between the head and fingers. I played it using my thumbs facing horozonatally to each other, starting from the head center pressing through the drum pulling my fingers toward me. I've found its easier to get a more pronounced tone pulling toward you than trying to push away. :) Very fun piece nonetheless. Its been since 2001 when I played it.

  • @ilovegodandmusic I'm actually doing the Timpani part with my school Wind Ensemble. What I do, because I have Timpani with white plastic heads, is this: I get some soap, I rub my hands good with it, I just apply just a little bit of pressure to the heads and voila! Instant whale.

  • Played Piano on this Back in High School.

    Hand endurance required. Great Piece

  • we r doing this for this years show...i play the trumpet.

  • I love this song!

I'm playing oboe, so I get this solo 3:44 / 7:44...It's fun, but it isn't at the same time

  • Putting this on the field this year.

  • love love LOVE this music...this is our opener this season (09'-10')....I play clarinet, it's fun on this music... :)

  • うちの学校が、この曲を

    コンクールでやりました☆

    みんな、頑張りましたぁ☆

  • clarinet is very fun on this piece. hahaha

  • Not as fun as the oboe part =D

  • not as fun as the euphonium part XD

  • we are playing this as our opener

  • This is our band show for my schools 09-10 marching season :/

  • Apparently you've never been in band.

  • ...I didn't write that. you can blame that on my cousins.

  • i played trumpet on this, by the way, and learning those triplets for only playing for a few months was one of the hardest things i've ever done. i mean, now, it'd probably be a breeze, but damnnnn. :] i just remember it was measure 69, because when we'd go over it, my teacher would yell, "first time through, 69 all tongues!"

  • it's weird, because my band played this the first year i was involved, but i only remember the triplets and the whale song. but i absolutely loved this song. weird.

    great song, though. ♥

  • dang it more ppl are marching this show...

hopefully they are not in florida!!!

    watever!~!

  • The spirit of sebring marching band is theyre in fl

  • we marched this my sophmore year go rowlett!

  • how the dell do u march to this?

  • good q.

  • With epic, sweeping choreography. I'd try and give the march some depth and have it look like waves.

  • thats what we have its incredable

  • We are going to march songs of sailor and sea it is kind of a tuff piece to put on the field

  • Sailors don't march. we always have a ride to where we are going to. Give me a steel deck, anyday!! =Stefan=

  • horn part is the best in this song i loved playing the soli and solo

  • i'm so glad his wife is a horn player otherwise i'd get crappy parts... yay for mrs. smith complaining about horns not getting fun stuff

  • This song FLIES. Especially if you play an upper woodwind instrument. The music is so difficult. ^_^''

I'm the only Oboe player, so guess what I have to do? xD

  • I play oboe, and we played this song at my highschool. Dont dread the solo. It's soooo much fun! : ) It might be one of my favorite solos ive ever had.

  • i played the alto saxphone part where the rhythm part goes...is trly hard...and my band use the soprano saxophone to play the oboe solo in the middle...

Guess how the percussionist make the whale sound there....he has to wipe the timpani with force only using his thumb...can you imagine?haha..

i miss this osng so much!

  • We're totally playing this song in our university concert band right now! 'Scept we're probably not gonna play it this fast...-.-;;

I play the clarinet and the part's annoyingly difficult but so fun at the same time!! ^_^ Mr. Robert Smith is an awesome composer and I've enjoyed every song of his I've ever played.

  • sweet! i play this song in wind ensamble

  • my sophomore year of high school (6 years ago) we played this as our marching band show.

    GREAT SONG.
