One thing I always loved about Rare back in the day was their unique ability to mix silly humour and serious depth.

Take this game and its SNES sequels, for instance - they're chock-full of comical pranks and random humour (the Stage Clear dance, Cranky Kong etc), but Rare never lets this affect the game's more serious side.

You still have those beautiful moments in the underwater levels, the heart-piercing Bramble Blast music from DKC2, and this final boss stage.

Pure epic wonder, all of them.

Why on earth does an Italian plumber eat mushrooms and head butt brick blocks to save a princess from a giant fire breathing dinosaur on a planet where mountains have faces, only to have a go-karting session with him shortly after?? Great games do not and should not make sense :D

Remember the premise of the story? I sure don't. I never knew it had one. You know, back in the day when a game was a purely entertaining thing, just to be played without complication? Sure I like a strong story told well, but every once in a while you just gotta run through a jungle, climb a mountain, board a ship and beat the snot out of a cannonball wielding lizzard in a cape.

K.Rool and Kremlings have appeared in 2 handheld titles, Barrel Blast, and Mario Super Sluggers since Rare left for M$oft. It is unlikely that Nintendo would bother getting permission for these minor appearances. Unless there's something Nintendo or Rare isn't telling us about ownership of these characters, then they belong to Nintendo. Why they don't use them is another story altogether.
