The contras were an anti-socialist paramilitary organisation in Nicaragua. During the 1980s, Nicaragua was controlled by the Sandinistas, who were a socialist government, and so the Reagan Administration backed the contras as part of their policy of "containment".

The reason that this was so controversial is that the contras killed circa 75,000 people, most of whom were entirely innocent civilians.
