at 4:52 starts the best 18 seconds ever. Look how spent the man is at 5:10 what ever happen to going completely balls out until almost dead? Long live real music!
saw 'em three times. I've NEVER seen any act as exciting as these lads were back then.. the audience were all lnackered just trying to keep up. Early ELP (before they became total wenkers) were brilliant, maybe more "technical" but they never had anything like the sheer voltage that the Nice had, Shame that there aren't better film records around.
Is that a Vox bass that Lee Jackson is playing? You don't see those anymore. Outstanding video. It's amazing to see Keith Emerson actually sitting while playing the Hammond, something he didn't do in later years.
@anthonydansullivan i saw ike and tina turner roadshow at mistral club in beckenhan..nr the station wasnt it? yeah and i saw the nice at fairfield halls, and the lyceum. king crimson were support band.along with ivor cutler..saw elp at walthamstow poly, pavilion picadilly circus, and kennington oval 72.....
@anthonydansullivan I was at the Piccadilly Circus Pavillion gig, was a tiny theatre as I remember and they done two shows each evening. Small world eh?
Think about this, 10 years is a very short period of time, think back to 1999, seems like yesterday.
Now think of this, 1958 to 1968, music went from Elvis to this, what happen in a very short period of time (most will say drugs) all I know is the english took music so far in such a short time. Awesome time to be alive and a musician.
Very well said, and very true, I'm 53 and have been a huge prog rock fan since it's onset (namely nice-crimson-yes) it's really been a pleasure looking back. Used to like these guys after retroactively discovering them after ELP.
Really great stuff. For an ELP fan, it is neat to see the development of that concept. The drummer (Brian Davidson) is every bit as good as Carl Palmer. I think most would agree that Lee Jackson pales in comparison to Greg Lake as a vocalist but it still works for the most.
I'm annoyed about that too...O'List was great. I always found his playing exciting, edgy and adventurous, and the Nice were not half as interesting after he had gone...how he ended up in obscurity was a shame. His playing on "The In Crowd" by B.Ferry was fantastic and thrilling. He had popstar looks to boot!!
Same reason why Eno had to leave Roxy, sometimes you can have only one star on stage. In this case we didn't only have Emerson, but dandy Jackson,so List let them
O'List once substituted for Syd Barrett at a Pink Floyd show where Syd was too messed up to play. Ironic then that O'List was asked to leave The Nice in part for his own drug use and erratic behaviour. Oh well, at least they never replaced him with anybody - although they did audition Steve Howe once.
I don't agree that O'List was brilliant. If you listen to the first album, and The Swedish Radio Sessions '67 by the way, it turns out, that he was a bit musically uneducated to follow Emerson' classical trained things. He's out of tune and rythm the most of times, and just adds some noise to the whole stuff.
Wow! Now THAT may explain why Lydon was so outspoken about the 'irrelevance' of ELP, Pink Floyd, etc. John may (try to) slap me for saying this, but maybe little Johhny secretly 'believed in' The Nice and Syd Floyd, and later felt perhaps thoroughly betrayed, and fired back his truth of anger and disgust towards the inflated forms of what, he may have decided, could have theoretically had so much more social and/or musical impact. I cannot say I entirely disagree. The Nice @ 6:00 IS punk rock.
ELP was by no means an inflated form of anything. But I'm now actually happy to be on the side of something so many people hate. I've come to terms with it and don't even argue. Why bother? Some people get it, some don't.

Just an interesting side note- David O'List used to sit in for Syd Barrett with Pink Floyd when Syd was unable to perform.

They're so awesome. Glad I saw the reunion tour in the 2000s. They were still amazing...though I missed Davy O'List.

Lee Jackson was just so cool!
Emo said that O'List left cos he was always too stoned to play.
I heard that it was cos he was knocking off Emo's old lady!

The Awakening movement is much cooler here than on the album. Too bad I was born too late to attend this concert.

First time I saw The Nice was at The Mistral Club in Beckenham circa '69, blew me away.
Also saw them at Royal Festival Hall and was present for recording of 5 Bridges at Fairfield Hall.
Then Emerson formed ELP. Oh dear. Saw them just the 3 times before I realised they were a bunch of pompous twats.
The Nice were Fresh, innovative, ELP justified Punk
Imo ;)

Thanks again for posting this. Being autumn '68, this would have been not too long before O'List departed.

Almost strange to see Emerson on stage with just one hammond and one piano.

Both great, different styles though. Palmer heavier on the jazz influences while Davison was more hard rock.

True. Steve Howe had an audition for Jethro Tull, too, before joining Yes.
