Well the design is one matter to make it look cool. Other is safety I think especially with these wide viewed windshield Toyota didn’t want the driver to be looking many places other than the road while driving.
Almost all cars in Japan have navigation systems in the cars now and these are all in the center of the car. So having the meter centered the driver has a shorter distance to look at both devices.

I can't understand Japanese designers' obsession for the central positioned gauges - speedo and everything. why should grand ma in the back seat know what speed I'm doin'? nice car estima but there's a huge space wasted between the front seats. (I'd like in there a fridge)
