Went to go see Soundgarden this past week in Vegas. It wasn't until I got there that I heard that Mars Volta was opening for them. This song was the only song I heard from TMV and was hoping they would play it because it kicks so much ass. But they ended up playing all new songs and tore the place apart. Lots of energy it was a kickass show (A lot more energetic then in this video). Soundgarden ended up being okay but still great. Afterwards Mars Volta was what I remembered most from the night
Cedric's voice is actually in very good shape here. Everyone forgets that motherfucker has to sing some of the most difficult vocal songs in contemporary music NIGHT AFTER NIGHT AFTER NIGHT AFTER NIGHT.
This was the first time I saw these cats and man, let me tell ya, they freaking tore the place apart! My a** was kicked after these guys smacked me up side the face with their chaos. Gotta say, that's one of the best live singers I've ever seen in my life; he's got such strong vocals and a nice presence on stage. Not a huge fan of their studio stuff but live they give you a really good rock and roll show.
I was there..... this show was AWESOME! omfg me and 4 friends needless to say hallucinogenics were involved. the show BLEW MY MIND had technical trouble at the beginning and they came out with the best attitude and played through the entire concert straight no breaks 2 2-12 hours or so it felt SO AMAZING
Not seen a very good live vocal performance by cedric on youtube yet. Obviously not a good live singer. For all the fanboys who will jump to back him up just watch muse live. I've seen them live twice and matt bellamy hits every note perfectly from start to finish.
@CichlidTim lol why see them live if its exactly the same as the studio? might as well just look at a poster while listening to the album, completely boring. cedric sings the way he does because hes not affraid to change things up, because he doesnt care what others such as urself think. now go away we tired of ur invalid arguments.
Matt doesn't have anywhere near the vocal range that Cedric has. Singing this high in register requires a lot of work. And Cedric does a really job with it, sometimes he tries to go too high and it doesn't come out too clear, but that doesn't mean he's a bad live singer. Let anyone trying singing in his register..its kind of impossible. Only Cedric can sing the way he really does. Plus, they don't play live the same way they do studio. They do a lot of improv.
@CichlidTim i used to think muse was a great band, and at one point they were pretty good. in fact at one point i was saying something similar to this to a friend. they were never near as good as the mars volta, but at one point i was categorize them as a "great band, like tmv". now though, i don't even know. i saw them live twice; one time in 2007 and one time in 2010. in 2007 they did a really good job, but at the 2010 they were pretty much terrible. they are pretty much a shit band now imo
Doesnt matter how many best live acts muse won, when you put these two bands live on the same card mars volta completely carve them up live. Cedrics the only singer in the world ive ever seen who can do like dunno what you could call it like ballerina tricks with the mic while singing, fucking epic the energy he puts in
I was at this bonnaroo And i tripped balls to this show i didnt leave centerroo or should i say couldnt find my way out till lke 7:30 am friken awsome
meh. technically? idk man. pridgen has that ubertechnical sounding style already. theodore plays loose but COULD play tight too. his loose feeling beats the shit out of pridgens hard-ass drumming imho, not to say I don't think pridgen is great, but there's a reason Deloused is still their undisputed best album.
@Colenelly I mean its something engineers laugh about, how a major label album could have been beaten to death like this and then released? If they would have backed off the limiting a bit, (rich costey) is an amazing mix engineer and contributes so much to final album, but the mastering is horrible. thx vlado meuller, another example Death Magnetic, or Californiacation, just sound terrible.
@Dai3eb Deantoni sucks compared to Theodore, sorry. Really not even remotely close. Deantoni plays a lot of stock electronica beats from that previous band he was in, and his fill work is total shit. Constantly messing them up, hitting off time a lot, just not a good rock drummer. Theodore takes a shit all over him with this kind of music.
@trenken You obviously haven't listened to Astroid Power-Up. The way Deantoni switches from meter to meter within dense polyphonic mixes, throwing out some of the most innovative drumming to date.
Yo, I drove from MInnesota to Tennesee to watch this, and my girlfriend just sat outside the tent, and did whatever, ha, we aren't together anymore, but she should have known she was seeing the James Brown from Texas, oh, some people, her name is Jessica, for all you who follow these things..
Does any person know the equipment of the singer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala? Vocal mic? Vocal effect pedals? Vocal mic stand? XLR cable? Is it a SENNHEISER MD421-2 vocal mic? Please help. I have been searching for a very long time.
I like cedrics voice in the lower register. Don't know why people are going on about it, he writes ridiculously ambitious parts, and its not like he doesn't give it his all! Incredible band
I'm sure if Cedric's singing sounded like shit then no one would listen to him sing. As simple as that. I personally like the way he sings; it's very realistic and unique. Plus he has an amazingly strong mixed voice.
well u my friend are a complete dumbass, u must have been born with an extra chromosome or something cause cedric's singing ability is way better than most other
This performance is way better than most of their other ones, I'll give it that. I like the mars volta...or...their records. But listen to how many times he sings flat and does not hit the notes. On the records he goes way fucking high, but he never does it live, why? Because he cant sing that high. Its bullshit, end of story. Bands that sound great on their records and then cant even come close to recreating it live, suck, period.
you idiot, you try singing with a falsetto for 9 years and see how high you can hit the note after you hit the blunt for so long, who cares if you think they suck get the fuck out of here, period.
This was never about if I could hit the high notes or not. I'm not in the fucking MV, am I? Well then that is pretty fucking irrelevant. I don't care about what drugs he does either, so fuck off with that shit.
I love how you react to someone's opinion of a singer as if they insulted YOU or something. Are you cedric's mother by chance? I don't THINK that cedric can sing, you THINK he can. Deal with it shit face. A message board was made for different opinions, not just one.
Singers don't hit the high notes on live performances.... just about ever. The reason being that they're on tour, and destroying their voice to hit a couple high notes in the beginning would leave it ruined for the rest of the tour. It's higher on record because he only has to do it get it right once. On a tour, when he's singing multiple songs, in almost all of which he hits a super-high note, it's going to be hard to recreate a perfect performance every time, especially when tired.
i think he can to sing as high than the records but, he knows about the trouble in his troat if he does that too many times!! he could loss his voice as many artist that try to give it all in every performing!! so it's better to used it just a few times, and when it's so necesary!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dunno about this band anymore....i jus watched them on youtube and i loved them live but then i bought the album and heard it a couple times and never went back.....i dunno
ohh lol werd, guess i kinda jumped to conclusions, people are always calling jon theodore john and i think he deserves atleast to be called by his proper first name, only one letter people you can do it :p
Whenever you have the chance 'homie' ask them both (Omar and his father) where are they from? What they call 'patria'. Go ahead, ask them you cockroach.
The Mars Volta is a truly good band, gifted singer...gifted guitarist. Not just that he is from Bayamon Puerto Rico just where I live and he is my inspiration to show the world that good musicians come from here too ^_^
God knows fucking PR needs some modern day talent to show that the Island's offering to music isn't only Reggaeton. I got nothing against it, and it's fun for parties and all, but that shit all has the same bea, just about lol. And lets face it, it's not always on the creative side of thngs.
I like hip hop like I like anything, but why on that Island is suddenly even the most simplistic but catchy sound of our ethnic instruments being constantly raped and reduced mostly to mere samples. People are too lazy these days to even shake a pair of maracas. And the fake instrumental work in Reggaeton tends to show greatly in the quality of the sound. electronica is great, But it should be used more to achieve sounds not common to what we already can get through conventional means.
How exactly is this boring? It has incredible musicianship and very diverse playing with an incredible array of instrumentation behind it, making for an extremely full and powerful sound with amazing progressions.
cos i didnt get through this song in guitar hero.. on drums.. thats how i have the hatred on it.. but i think its kinda childish to think that way... its a great song.. in the end.. as pretty much like what you said...
Omar Rodriguez Lopez is Puerto Rican (Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico), And Cedric Bixler Zavala is Mexican American (Born in Redwood City, CA), Anyways who FUCKING cares where they from.
Cedric, the backing guitarist, the bassist, and the woodwind player are all Hispanic, Omar and his brother are Puerto Rican, the keyboardist and the current drummer are black, and the former drummer and the sound designer were white. Diverse bunch of guys to say the least.
He does have a higher pitched voice which you will learn to love if you are new to the mars volta via guitar hero. Prepare for your taste in music to drastically change if you are not used to volta. If you are then sweet.
no, i'm not... i was just talking about what i think. if you disagree with that opinion, and instead you just insult me, without arguing why, just makes YOU a moron.
that's right, i agree with that completely, but i was talking about the songs as isolated components... if you just pay atention to them apart from the rest of the songs in the album, you probably will don't understand it and will see them as meaningless and unsense as i said before.
who cares if it's spanish! i'm not spanish at all and i love it when he sings in spanish, cuz it sounds cool and i try to figure out what he's saying since i'm in my 2nd year of spanish. point being...they're amazing! spanish or not!

People are too lazy these days to even shake a pair of maracas. And the fake instrumental work in Reggaeton tends to show greatly in the quality of the sound. electronica is great, But it should be used more to achieve sounds not common to what we already can get through conventional means.

boring ...
mastera7x 2 years ago
How exactly is this boring? It has incredible musicianship and very diverse playing with an incredible array of instrumentation behind it, making for an extremely full and powerful sound with amazing progressions.
If that's boring, then nothing can excite you.

Cedric, the backing guitarist, the bassist, and the woodwind player are all Hispanic, Omar and his brother are Puerto Rican, the keyboardist and the current drummer are black, and the former drummer and the sound designer were white. Diverse bunch of guys to say the least.

do they have mexican roots or something?
i´ve seen them performing live, and they had a mexican flag decorating the table where the DJ was.
slbdevil 3 years ago
The story I heard was that someone threw the flag on stage and they adopted it. Cedric Bixler-Zavala (the singer) is Mexican, though.

Cedric is Mexican.

omfg not tryin to sound dorky or anything but on guitar hero he sounds like a chick.
dontcuturself 3 years ago
He does have a higher pitched voice which you will learn to love if you are new to the mars volta via guitar hero. Prepare for your taste in music to drastically change if you are not used to volta. If you are then sweet.
Saidso17 3 years ago
yea im getting used to it to, but i dont really care if his voice is is high pitched and sounds like a chick, this song RULES!!!XD

gardeniaaa 3 years ago
by the way, the lyrics in spanish are as meaningless and unsense as the lyrics in english so... who cares...
gardeniaaa 3 years ago
!!!!!tu apellido se cambio

una historia sin mi madre¡¡¡¡¡¡
what do you mean by meaningless??????
vaginadepresiva 3 years ago
gardeniaaa 3 years ago
They make sense if you try to understand the album as a story.
BambiTheCierv 3 years ago
that's right, i agree with that completely, but i was talking about the songs as isolated components... if you just pay atention to them apart from the rest of the songs in the album, you probably will don't understand it and will see them as meaningless and unsense as i said before.
gardeniaaa 3 years ago
