Thanks for the memories. I was stationed on Giessen Army Depot 74-76. Was in Darmstadt 78-81. Didn't think I would want to see Giessen again when I left. After seeing your video, I kind of miss it.
living in germany as a refugee through 86/87, i worked at that base. we had to leave our camp in grunberg-reinhardshain at 2:00 am every night, drive to giessen, and stand in line for a couple of hours to get a one day pass allowing us to work there, unloading trucks with supplies. that was until german government found out about it, and we had to quit, if we didn't want to lose government aid (bed, food, and 80 DM in taschengeld/month).
WOW! I didn't realize how much I missed this place. I was stationed here from late 89-92 in B Battery 4/43 ADA. The friends I made there are irreplaceable.
Hey! Was there from 85 to 86. Unit disbanded and shipped south. Barracks room was in the Shangri-La orange brick buildings. Used to put our stereo speakers up in the windows and "entertain" the formations below. I have some photos around Giessen. Did the Germans still have the gliders just outside depot when you were there? Could take a funfzehn minuten ride in a glider for 5 Deutschemark. I have a photo of one of the gliders.
I have a photo of a German Pilot standing at the gate at Giessen , I do not know his name , but he haunts me ,, please contact me , I want to show you some pictures I have of Giessen , circa 1941
kind of spooky, seeing the old sites......was there from 85-88, first on Pendleton then we moved to Depot, stayed in building 12? the old barracks, then moved up the hill to the 4/3 ADA barracks with their Shangra la two-man rooms :) then back to the old barracks. I went back in 91 or so for Reforger from Heidelberg.......was strange going back to Giessen......miss those days with the 202nd MP Co.
I can't believe that's the same NATO site we had to go to while on Alert Force from Rivers Kaserne. Don't remember much of it since we were usually pretty drunk and high when we had to supply the 30 man Alert Force. 2/92 73-74.
I was there between 2003-2007 and it was great gotta love Mr. Jones and Saigon best duck fried rice ever. Also cant forget about the Fun club many woman and many drunk nights with a doner.
In 1983-86 I was in B btry 2nd bn 2nd ada bde out of Bad Hersfeld. I use to go to Giessen to pick up parts a lot. Our unit also did some training there. We also would travel to Giessen on weekends to go to McDonalds since we did not have one in Bad Hersfeld.
I served there from 1982-83. Svc 2/92d, 13B10 & 64C10. I've forgotten how ugly the kasserne was until I seen that green color. I miss the people there. And the best beer, Licher. And the towns: Allendorf am Lumda, Rudesheim, Marburg. And the dance clubs: Rock Bottom, The Big Apple, Lone Star.
Giessen sucked! rads were racist, wouldn't let our community commander into the disco because he was black..rampant drugs and alcohol in barracks and on duty (was an mp in hhb 2nd/2nd ada 1977-1979..almost got killed by trying to stop drugs; two murders at 123 club which was closed down. army screwed up some of my really good jr nco's ; witneesed an attempted muder 1st night in barracks. trans ferred to 42nd mp grp hq andi it was an awsome unit; great troops, ncos and officers.

@nalatrebo - Who is this? Did you work at the Aafes warehouses. I was there at the warehouses til 1991. Maybe we know each other. You are still in Giessen? Hit me up.
Wow!!!!!! I was stationed there 2000-2002 Bravo 2/32 MLRS we stayed in those barracks you show in the beginning of the video. Then we moved to the new barracks.....brings back alot of memories thanks for posting the video....
@Chanticleer@TheLara09 , do you mean the address of the Army Depot? It's closed now, and it's about two kilometers out of the stadtmitte on Rodgener Strasse.
2002-2005 16th EN BN, A Co GATORS!! I hadn't realized I'd feel so strongly about missing that place. I didn't realize I enjoyed it so much until I look back. And I liked the barracks portion.. it's where we lived man.
PART II I remember many a nights leaving or stumbling back with all the guys, and some lucky German girls trying to get in thru ID checks and signing in visitors... LOL... Any more of the city? I'll have to check all your videos.
I was there in 2003-2005 as a Pond Guard. Now I am in the UK and just saw the video. Somehow I have a weird feeling when I see that everything is empty.
If I think back I must say that I loved the job even that some of the soldiers did not like us. But hey, it was not easy for us. :-)
I was there 76-78 C-2/2 - 32ND A.D.A on the old H.A.W.K tac site my barracks were right in front of the alpine club, we had a soda machine in the barracks with Budweiser and Colt45 malt liquor when that was empty, we were so lazy to walk out the gate and walk the perimeter fence to the club, climbing the fence behind the barracks was the fastest route, lost count how many times, i mangled jeans and fell from that 12ft fence ( I hated that fence) LOL , Wish, I had a case of Giessener export
First off wow great vid...second Shawdizzle what up man! I was in the 527th MP CO 3rd Plt from dec 03 to dec06 i miss that place hopefully i will get a chance to go back some day

I miss Giessen so much. It's sad that it now looks like a ghost town. Really miss the German frauleins. Ich Liebe ale Deutsche frauleins. I wonder if the Germans miss us.
Hi, thanks for these nice shots: Raised in Gießen, I had, as a child, never acces to this area. I always was curious, how it would look like...:-)
Most of the american soldiers were definetely kind people these days. I don't know, how it would be today, but I remember well, how nice they were - especially to us kids. Now, living in Hamburg for more

Spent a LONG year and a half at Nato Site 4 in '84 & '85, assigned to the 202 MP Co. Thanks for posting that video. A shame what happened to it. Wonder of the Heck Meck and 50-50 bars are still downtown...
That's a word I haven't heard in a while. The 50-50. I swear I was there every weekend between 85-90. I've probably had a beer with you my friend. Peace.
omg i miss that place i was there in 2/3 aplha bettery from 01-04 i miss the people the women one particular one lol...the clubs malibu, woodland, irish rover, natrix all that stuff...if i could go back i would trust me i would god bless that place.
Great video, very nostalgic with the music selections. The Malibu, The Fun, The Alpine Max, The Super Max, Baba Jagas, Mr. Jones, The Woodland, The New Yorker, The Havana Club, 401 Darts, did I miss anything. I was there from 2001 until we left for Iraq in 2003, was a magical time before Iraq.
the keys of the army depot were given to the mayor of Gießen. Now the depot and the area around it is free for sale. but I dunno if there are any interests yet.
Was with the 3AD's 503 MP Co at Schloss Kaserne 70-72, then to CIDC in Frankfurt 72-74, got assigned to work "undercover" at the then EES Exchange Depot, Giessen. Nailed some black market operation selling our stuff to the Germans and the Turks. Long time ago and Far Away...I go back every couple of years, was there right after Ray Barracks closed in Friedberg in 07 and when Schloss Kaserne closed in 92.
Wow! Its been years since I looked into the happenings in Giessen. Shocking to know it closed. I was stationed in Friedberg but all the processing was done there and I revisited countless times. 1999-2001 2-37 AR BN Dukes. A lot of memories that will live on. Thanks for this comrades.
units left there when i left in 07 were 2/3 FA, 16th Engineer BG, 527th Military police co. which i was in which moved to hoenfels, one platoon(mine) from our company joined the 212th and stayed there until base closed in mid 07 then went 2 Wiesbaden. other sub units in the BSB. Friedberg had 1/36 inf. and 2/36 amr. and a Cav. unit. other sub units like finance and dental etc. were under BSB. all the combat arms were scattered around europe and back to the US upon all the closings in germany
I was in the 527th MP Company 02-07. I miss that place in a way even though i used to say it sucked when i was there. Haha. Man seeing that makes me miss it. I miss my days on active duty and in Germany. Best 5 years of my life.
Did that chow hall still have all those beautiful paintings on the walls? What is Geissen Depot used for today? Can I get on US Depot to take a look around when I take a trip to Europe this Summer? I left 10 years ago and can't wait to take a look around Germany to see what's changed in familiar old places, but I don't expect to see much US Army like back then. I'd expect to see the same old places a slightly different street art scene going on. I loved going out to stadtmitte.
I was in 2/3 FA as a cook on Giessen US depot from late 1996 to early 1999. We moved to Giessen from Kirchgoens shortly after returning from the IFOR mission in Bosnia during most of 1996. You're vid show my old mess hall. Thank you. After leaving Europe 10 years ago, I'm returning later this year for a tour. It's sad that it's closed, but if it were open, I wouldn't be allowed on for sure due to force protection rules where you need ID. Miss the ol' days as painful as they were.
I lived there as a brat from 1972-74. My Dad was a MSgt there while my older brother was a Spec4 helicopter navigator. I loved living there, riding the train all over and hiking to the local castles.
I was there in 1985, was with the first patriot unit (HHB 4/3 ADA) deployed to Germany. We moved into the new barracks by the back gate. The town of Giessen was wonderful and the one club we went to every chance we got was "Der Ausweg"
Your barracks room looked just like ours did maybe the same building.
Hey Jeff: Yes, we knew the 4/43 folks well. The mess hall in the video is just next to 4/43, and the barracks (exterior) at 2:34 were 4/43. Ours were built in '91 and were identical. Man, we went to the Ausweg all the time. Great alt/dance club. It's now closed.
I saw that the unit had changed from 4/3 to 4/43. I reinlisted for a non-combat arms
unit and went to Fort Benning to a Ambulance Compnay, big mistake I should have stayed right there in Giessen.
"Der Ausweg" slam dancing great music Girls good german beer the girls. The bar tender would have our beers all ready for us he knew what we wanted. Man..........
@jeffhorne - Hey Jeff! I was there from 1981 to 1984 at the 2/2 ADA (Hawk). We had the tac site just below your patriot site on the hill. I watched it go up! I loved Giessen....and loved the Depot!
@jeffhorne My husband, Kevin Fitzgerald, was stationed there at the same time with the same unit. I got there in April and we moved off base. Such great memories from there.
I was there from '98 to '01. Had some good memories there. I remember how we use to sneek girls in from the Woodland Club by putting them in the trunk of our car...Memories.
its sad that it closed... i still live in giessen..... they gave it to the german but it still remains abandoned....they want to demolish the PX..... the old housings gonna get usual german ones probably...
I was at the Depot from Jun 76 until Oct 78. The entrance at min 1:41 into the video was known as A Btry 2/2 ADA (Improved Hawk Missile site barracks)in the mid 70s. The Site was 4 miles away. I was a 24C IHIPWR RADAR tech on the Hawk Missile System..
My dad worked at the Depot as a DOD civilian. I was a "brat", attended Giessen Elementary and Jr. High from 68-76. Had my first summer job at the Commissary and in 1975 at the Depot. It's sad to know it's all pretty much gone now. I loved Miller Field when they had the yearly carnival and had pizza at the Villa Capri. I found pics of the PX complex and the Army Depot on the web. If anyone's interested, message me. They were the best of times!
Hi I really love this Video of my Hometown and the place I use to spent lot's of happy and sad times. Those new Barracks Buildings you showed and those closets actualy my Brother and I put in when they first were Build. Then in the 90's until 2003 my Husband was a Motorpoolsgt in 2/3 Fa in one of those Motorpools you've showed.Haven't been back since 2003 but my family told me that everything has been closed it will never be the same.I will miss it thanks for making this video
Glad you enjoyed it! We were certainly in close proximity, then, because we lived right down the street as these "new barracks" went up. I have more video that I will post at some point. Hope you are enjoying the States.
That sounds good.I enjoy the states but at the same time miss my home.I do want to say thank you to all of you who served time over in Germany won't be the same without you all.Thank you
Thanks for the memories. I was stationed on Giessen Army Depot 74-76. Was in Darmstadt 78-81. Didn't think I would want to see Giessen again when I left. After seeing your video, I kind of miss it.

Wow! Its been years since I looked into the happenings in Giessen. Shocking to know it closed. I was stationed in Friedberg but all the processing was done there and I revisited countless times. 1999-2001 2-37 AR BN Dukes. A lot of memories that will live on. Thanks for this comrades.

I was in the 527th MP Company 02-07. I miss that place in a way even though i used to say it sucked when i was there. Haha. Man seeing that makes me miss it. I miss my days on active duty and in Germany. Best 5 years of my life.

I was there from 89 to 91, I actually joined the AIr Force in Giessen. Loved the Depot. I use to work at the big warehouse there.

I was there from 1979-1981 at NATO Site 4. I liked going to the Depot and one day I too will return for a visit.

Your barracks room looked just like ours did maybe the same building.
jeffhorne 3 years ago

Giessen Army Depot! I was at Rivers Barracks from '76 to'79. Doesn't make sense that I want to go back so bad to a place I couldn't wait to leave.

I was there from 1974-1976. Any pictures of Rivers Barracks? Is it still there?
mosquitobob 3 years ago
It is somewhat there. Some of the buildings have been razed, and there is an auto mall out that way. I have a few pictures--send me your email.

Hard to see NATO Site 4 like that after guarding it for 30 months during the Cold War.
Thanks. Another xtowerrat.

Glad you enjoyed it! We were certainly in close proximity, then, because we lived right down the street as these "new barracks" went up. I have more video that I will post at some point. Hope you are enjoying the States.
