Actually what really happened was that the whole colony were wiped out because they died of starvation due to the greatest drought in 700 years. So you could say that these British settlers came there at the wrong time.
I've always felt that it was a combination of things (intermingling with Native tribes, wandering deep into the interior, sailing up or down the coast and ending in disaster) which helped the Roanoke colony disappear.
If it was disease there would have been graves or other evidence. Native attack same thing.
In Search Of was a great program and caused me some sleepless nights. Good job!
Maybe they even sailed the ship up (or down) the coast line as far as the Florida Keys or as far north as Prince Edward Island. There really wouldn't have been any 'easy' way of getting word back to the British as to where they had gone. But your theory is not only extremely plausible, but highly likely as well.
Some believe that the Lumbee include decendants of the Lost Colony but probably not. The Lumbee are most likely the cosolidation of several small tribes that retreated from European encroachment to the Lumber River area of what is now Robeson County.
So a zombie apocalypse.

Say, on an Island nearby Roanoke there's a tribe of bizarrely pale white, blue-eyed Native Americans. Only 3 miles away. On CROATAN ISLAND!
Wonder what that could mean...............

One overlooked theory suggests the colony was lost at sea in an ill-attempt to return to England, which would account for the missing ship.
