This also caused a global temperature drop of 1.2 degrees celcius, and killed many more than the figure around 35,000 as this volcano caused temperature drops so vast in some countries that crops failed to grow
this volcano would have caused tsunami's 2000km away to the coasts of Australia. it would also have cause anyone in a 5-10km radius to be deaf. it was a fucking monster of a volcano and the initial explosion was suggested to be the loudest sound ever recorded in history.
I have to say its depiction of the tsunami, although dramatic, is sooooo much more "tamed" than the real deal. If you watch some of the Japan tsunami videos, even cars can't outrun them, needless to say that nobody can possibly survive the impact of a tsunami.
I read about Krakatoa when I was a very small girl, 7 years old in 1972. That was what started my lifelong love for volcanoes. I then spent 15 years reading everything about volcanoes. I think it is odd that the people around Krakatoa didnt take the signals seriously. They have lots of volcanoes, some dorment some active and they are used to tsunamis due to the fact that earthquakes are rather common. the last days moved me and the sound when the mountain explodes was massive. Allmost real.
My god! Watching the sea being pulled in was so scary.. its like its being drain at a super fast speed and there's nothing they could do.. its like my washimg machine! So scary. I pity the ppl then. I'm so sorry for the lost
It's scary to imagine if Anak Krakatoa experienced an eruption similiar to 1883. The death toll would dwarf those in 1883 since the the islands like Java and Sumatra are much more populated today compared to back then if the eruption of Anak Krakatoa created tsunamis.

A good film, unless for one carelessness: the dialoque was conducted in modern Malaysian Melayu. In fact, the people in West Java, the location of the story, is speaking in Sundanese. The Melayu (Malay) is a language spoken in Indonesian eastern and northern Sumatra and part of Kalimantan as well as Malaysia. The one used in this film resembles the Malaysian Melayu which is not compatible anthropologically.
@supervegito2277 the problem was at this time no one knew the signs, we are lucky with like internet and shit we have more knowledge of when to watch and when the hell to run for your life haha
@Aggies4lifedog ya and the death toll would have been significantly larger had people not known what to do. You think so many people would have lost thier lives during the 2004 tsunami if they knew what signs to look for?
This part really gives me the creeps T_T. With Merapi mountain just erupt a few days ago and now that Anak Krakatau are also showing some sign of activity.. I just really hope sumtin like this wouldn't ever happened again...if it does.. God, please save us... >_<
@vanhalen8200 it is in krakatoa but when it erupted it destroyed itself the blast was heard in Texas. the Shockwave was traveled around the world several times. That wave caused most of the casualties. The wave was about 135 ft tall and traveled at 600 MPH. The affects were felt in the English channel. A while later another volcano apeared next to where Krakatoa was the locals named it Anak Krakatoa or child of Krakatoa.
@vanhalen8200 : HI... Krakataoa is in our country, Carita beach Banten(west java)- indonesia... today is still active, just 1 hour by fast boat from carita...
@oox2000 In the Sundae Straits to be exact. I don't know if I'm wrong, and somebody will no doubt tell me so here, but I think the entire island of Krakatoa was blown out of the water by the massive volcanic eruption in August 1883. Today there is a new island and volcano that's grown over years, called Anak Krakatoa that translates from Indonesian as son of it.
Truly, such "tiny" catastrophe can seem like the end of the world or even claim millions of lives. When all it is, is probably just a pimple popping on the surface of the earth.
Also, you freaking run when you see water sucked away like that. But I must admit, it is fascinating to watch.. but it's not worth your lives.
Apparently the only sing of life they found when they returned to the island of 'Krakatoa' after the 1883 eruption was a spider in a rock crevice, or something like that. My uncle told me. Either way, pretty darned lucky spider!
Krakatoa was the largest volcanic eruption in MODERN history, and also the loudest sound from any eruption in history (it was heard over 4000 miles away). Tambora was responsible for the largest recorded eruption in history, which goes to show you can never trust a so called "near extinct" volcano
I've read in wikipedia that the sound that came from the eruption of this volcano was the loudest sound on earth ever witnessed. "People within 15km of the volcano, had their eardrums perfurated by the sound.", "It was heard as far as +- 5.000km" - Wikipedia.
