I used to think all poetry was pretentious bullshit to be studied in an English Lit class and then forgotten.

Then I heard Listener. This is what poetry is about; raw emotion.

our spines grown stronger in time" That says what the whole song is about. It's about coming together and helping eachother be strong and accomplish things and just be stronger. That's the group of lines that always gets me, I get a little choked up at that line lol, not afraid to admit it. This guy shows a real mastery of metaphor, and really just sews a beautiful poem.

@CthulhuDarkLord i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but thats completely what you see in the song and thats okay! but in an interview he talks about how it has to do with history, and how we build our foundations on old "boards" and "history" and how we only have what we remember.

I don't think just the lyrics of this are why it's so beautiful, it's how he is saying it. There's so much emotion, so much projection. Not to mention the subtle music, the sound that is just enough to add that mood... God, I am so glad this was shown to me.

thats what inspired Dan to write this song.he said it him self at a show before playing this song... being the meaning of the song its for the listener to take away from what they feel is the message to the listener of the music the art. but most importantly we must all come together. But not lose who we are as one person..

this song isnt really about god. but about people and how we come together, when given less then what we need.. In order to pull throught together, weather its to help one or many.. People of a small town on a coastline wanted to build a church.. But had no wood, or lumber to build this church out of.. All they had where litters of ship wrecks, given to them from the sea around them. so all the people of this town came together. using pieces from these ship wrecks. to build what they didnt have.

@johnnyXsniper Same here. I don't believe in any god's or higher powers of that sort, but this mans music, lyrics, and passion help it's meaning reach far beyond religion. It touches on a much more personal level. Really amazing stuff. Probably my favorite musician/lyricist of all time. Right up there with Buddy Wakefield.

@666thehazard that's so true. and that's exactly it. it's not just a religion that he's writing about. it's not labeled like that. it's just his relationship with God and his journey with what he believes. i'm a christian, but this touches on a deeper level than just religion. it's real feelings that you don't have to be religious to understand or to get impacted by. this man writes real lyrics.

If you simply don't believe in god, you're an atheist. If you actively oppose the idea of god, and consider religion a constant negative, you're anti-theist. So, you can't be an anti-theist and be okay with messages about god.

I enjoy bands that come from a religious base somehow, but don't get all preachy with what they sing. Rather than feeling like I'm listening to worship in church, I'm listening to a song loaded with lyrics and stuff that just resounds hope. That's the feel I get from this song.
