@FortheLuIz Because people die when bad people or natural disasters kill them. That's how it usually works. It's simple cause and effect. Is that too hard for you?
And again, I very much doubt you care about sheep. Are you a vegetarian? Wear no leather? If not, then don't go on about the sheep because you'd have no scruples about killing them.
Actually, you don't care about Job's kids either. You're just whining.
This past semester I took a course on Wisdom Literature and we went through Job, and I had to write papers on multiple passages throughout the text from Clines, Newsom, Smick, Hartley, Kidner. Please, would you consider sharing the sources/commentaries used for this discussion?
@n00bie51 I remember checking Clines and probably Hartley, and something by Kidner too. I also checked at least 4 others that were available at the local seminary. If you want me to match piece by piece though, I'd have to go back and do it all over again.
@jelloladyful That's where I got nearly all of that from. :D Only exception is the honor challenge part, but as the Context Group points out, most scholars aren't up on that aspect.
The first point you gave... that "Satan was delivering a challenge of honor to the moral integrity of humanity (whom Job represented)..." Can you provide backing for this?
@Konanarian It's pretty obvious from the context once you read up on the social science works. But to sum it up, you can see the challenge easily -- even Prof admits that -- and honor was the prime concern of their social world; ultimately any test like this would have honor at stake.
@TheViolentBuddha That's not a rebuttal, that's you whining like Prof and VG. Beyond that, as ignorant as you are, you don't recognize the imperative of an honor challenge in an agonistic society. Humans in such societies frequently value honor over life and do so happily; you calling it "to prove a point" is insulting and bigoted.
For someone who uses Buddha's name you're sure ignorant about the world he lived in.
@ThePuppyTurtle Personally I can live with it as either "model" fiction or actual history, or some mix of both. I doubt the likes of him would shut up either way, though.
Right...

I don't understand why Job's innocent children and the sheep had to die? What did they do?
FortheLuIz 2 months ago
@FortheLuIz What makes you think theirs was a judicial execution?
And like you care about sheep? Please.

@tektontv - I don't think theirs was a judicial execution, I just didn't understand why they had to die. Same with the sheep.

Interesting interpretation, but do the commentaries on Job back you up?

@Konanarian Look up any introductory work on the social sciences and the Bible and it becomes quite clear what's going on.

@tektontv okay how about this when is destroying some ones life to prove a point okay, which IS exactly what god did with Job.

@TheViolentBuddha Looked it up -- no match. But I looked up "ignorant bigot" and found you cross-referenced.
"Special pleading" is what stupid people call something they can't answer when it is over their heads.

@TheViolentBuddha Don't forget that the book of Job is a poem, and thus probably fiction.
