My grandma plays this game on our old MegaDrive. She os over 70 years now but plays the shit out of it. When I play against her, it's just a pure fun. The music is pretty melancholic, yes. Adding some sort of sadness to the good memories playing that game for 1,5 hours in a row without "dying". Starting a new game after that is like playing in Slo-mo^^

IGN editor Levi Buchanan explained in a review of Alex Kidd 1 that he understood some games haven't aged as well as it. However, talking about bad games he has fond memories of, he said "I cannot defend Columns." Does anyone have any idea why? It may be a copy of Tetris, but its superior. The idea of methodically crafting combos through the use of gravity was wholly unique and copied by Dr. Mario. Challenge modes with blinking pieces to remove have been a staple of every puzzle game since.

I remember, about 10 or so years ago, there was a game shop I went to and they had like 10 or so used copies of this game at any point. So it's a great, fun game that's even easier to find than "Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt" for the NES (which they usually had like 7 copies at any given time).

also theres another mode of this game where theres a flashing jewel at the bottom of the pile and you have to work you way to it and connect it to some more jewels to wipe it out and win that board. then the game just generates these indefinatly till you die or give up

man I remember this game getting so so quick. I was at around level 150 and i had to pause the game after each block, decide where I was gonna aim it, and un-pause. And then repeat. And even then it was really hard

Wow this game takes me back :) I got it as part of "Mega Games I" with my Mega Drive. I had already played it before Christmas Day on my mates, so i remember showing my Dad all the games (Streets of Rage 2, Super Hang-On, World Cup Italia 90 and Columns) and he really took to Columns.

I remember once writing down one of his scores (it was way over 100,000) and sending it in to sega magazine :)

He can still drum up an easy 50,000 to this day some 17 years later :)

I play columns a lot and i think the best strategy I can give someone to play better is to practice on hard difficulty. That way when you get to easy and medium they seem super slow. I have been playing this game for years and my longest game lasted me about an hour and a half starting from easy all the way to difficult. I'll try posting a screenshot of my score it was in the 500 thousand rank. :P

wow, the difficulty is way too high in this game. It fails at slowly building up difficulty like tetris. I like the game itself and the idea but the spike in difficulty is just too high man. lost interest after the first play, oh well too bad.

I feel sorry for the kid that paid 50.00 bucks for this way back when.

Well sure, it's a decent game, but it's not a Sonic game! Even if they made some half-assed attempt at replacing the graphics with Sonic-themed ones, it still wouldn't count as a Sonic game.

Not to mention there's already Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which is extremely similar. They could have picked a better puzzle game to include, if they really felt they needed to include one.

One difference I've noticed between this and tetris is that instead of 4 four blocks, you have 3, well, 3 jewels. Some may say it is a Tetris rip-off, but that's not always a bad thing.

After 3 years of not playing it, on my first re-try I was at 6 million, my eyes were almost popping out. I didn't think, my fingers just moved at freaking speeds like they weren't mine!

I got this game as a part of a Sega 6-Pak(including Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi 2, and this motorcycle game). This made my childhood gaming, and the music is awesome. 10/10
