@whostheguy lol, actually BMW won in 1999. Unfortunately, the GT-ONE never won a race. I always thought that it was one of the coolest looking LMPs ever, though.
1. Porsche & Auto Union (AUDI) because these companies created 917,917/30, cisitalia 360, 911, 956/962, type c, streamliners with ground effect. Ferdinand Porsche is the best!
Thank God for Gran Turismo, a game responsible for the 13-50 year old people who love racing for racing. Not just win to get rims that are shiny and spin, the people interested in that kind of gaming can stick to the game paper boy! Fun AND pointless. G.T. actually makes you appreciate what a real driver is asked of when the event starts. BTW dear polyphony, no GT5 (FULL GAME) means prohibition for us die hard fans. I'm really thirsty...
i believe Subaru should be added to the dissapointments considering they lost Ken Block's interest by taking the entire company out of the WRC, but if they would have had the money, their astonishing 4 wheel drive system would have been refined more and possibly helped them win more championships in the WRC.
They pulled out of WRC because the FIA won't stop imposing ridiculous restrictions and design rules on the cars. Hell they were seriously considering banning forced induction on all WRC cars for a while. Why do you think there are only two manufacturers left?
alfa doesnt anymore but lotus, bmw, ferrari and porsche and some others that understand the real art and science of making a car stick to what a real car should be on road and on track: a well-ballanced RWD -not just brute force- that handles great and communicates whats going on thru the wheel and pedals, everybody with a diferent strategy ( front engine rear or midle) but same objective and result get huge amounts of condensed excitement, pleasure, fear and adrenaline.
Lotus should do more racing. I know they are doing F1 this year but they build sports cars, surely racing there cars would seriously improve the brand.
You've got to give Audi some credit for working on diesel LeMans. Diesel is actually becoming a alternative to a petrol cars because of this kind of development.

Japanese manufactures suck at F1 but are outstanding when it comes to WRC and illegal street racing.

toyota should kill nascar to be fair. Would be simple for the driver, press the gas pedel once, get it stuck, then be on full acceleration for the enitre race! easy! could even have a nap on the way round! see toyota, every cloud and all that :P
Don't like the idea of Ford being put together with the big boys... for me the germans are the winners if it's about pushing the technology further Porsche BWM Audi and Mercedes have made more during the last 20 years then all the other brands put together... what have Ford done?
ford has become a rally force, and the mustang is doing well in Drifting(if you call that racing)... and don't forget way back in the day of the model t, who invented producing vehicles anybody can buy... same concept today w/ the fiesta, GT, & cosworth
I don't call drifting racing... the Mustang is not a sports car it's a poser car. I love WRC and I realize that ford has done very well but still comparing Ford to Ferrari and Porsche when it comes to motorsport contributions... i'm sorry to say but it's just silly. Ford made the car big back in the day... but Mercedes invented it!
thats why you see so many mercedes driving around compared to ford... ford also didn't get bailed out, and they arent comparing it to ferrari and porsche, those cars are on a whole other level... and i honestly think that ferrari and porsche have serious competition with the maytech gt1.
Along the years so much brand atempted to get up there and that's a good thing because it keeps them awake and pushing the technology further... look at where Porsche is with there hybrid racing technology in the 911 GT3R hybrid (racing car) and the 918 Spyder concept revealed today ... years ahead anything! In months these technology will be winning races.
thats why porsche is legendary racing, and ford is just best in racing... legendary means they will never be forgotten if they go under, people kinda forgot about the ford gt until leo brought it up
Ford, Chevrolet, Chrisler need come with racing cars such as the Camaro, mustang, and Challerger. However dont stop there keep racing bring new models and just go against the now "cool" brands so we can do better for the American Auto Makers.
ferrari and porsche leo is spot on with them two as they are the biggest in racing but i believe its time we se these two great manufactuers race in lmp1 to relly test whos the best. id love to see bently come back to racing and also ford to come back to a ful lmp1 scheme. and its greatto see games testng how it is on a real track like gran turismo
Nissan should be serious about racing here in the US likethey have in Japan. They are a force in the JGTC. BMW are good on SCCA. Honda should jump into racing but they dont have weapons to get in the fight. The tuner houses should jump in too I know its gonna be extra pricy for them but think of all the press and people who would know about your shop and accomplishments.
i think that VW should start racing really big because since they own many companies all the companies will benefit from their knowledge and effort.
another car that i would like to see get into racing is gumpert, i heard they were a good brand and they should up their name by racing, they wouldn't really need to change anything in their car.
Mazda is on top. They want you to race their products and give really deep discounts to racers like no other company I have seen. So why I don't have a mazda anymore I have to wonder.
porsche and audi should join f1 instead of economically strapped teams that cannot even make the track let alone the starting grid. in general, i think FIA sanctioned leagues should be left to the teams who have the most cash to throw around, because that is how you get racing technology (which these days is more safety and energy efficiency than anything else) into road cars.
Anyway, I'd like to look back at the Chrysler group and the things they accomplished in racing back in the day. In the days when NASCAR was raced with real production cars and weren't identical, Dodge made the first car to ever break a 200mph average (yes, average) speed with their Charger Daytona. Ford was struggling to average 190. It was set to hold the world record forever until Porsche decided to blow the doors of Talladega with their 917.
lancia could race only if they stopped making the crap cars that are currently coming out of their factories. but with some effort, your right it could work.
I know this is a little early to reminisce but honestly...can anyone really wrap their head around the fact...THE VIPER IS DEAD!!!!!! So far as racing even drifting, the viper has been a beast. I saw my first one in that Chevy Chase movie where the son won one in Vegas, I have been researching it ever since. Remember when they use to compare it to the Vette then all comparisons just stopped!!! That will be the car that our generation treats like a 69 Hemi Cuda convertible...watch.
they almost single handedly made Japanese sports cars cool down here in Australia.
It is clear when you drive a Evo or STi road car that it was originally built as a Rally car and you have loads of technology from the factory to show it. Ie. YAW control, active 4x4, adjustable diff, active centre diff etc.
I'd have to say I'm a Mazda guy. I think they are the silent killer. You said, they're grassroots. They're here for the little guy. Take the Mazdaspeed3. It's won top honors for many years in it's class against even some AWD competition. How? The Miata, yes, a chick car, but a TRUE roadster.
I'm not 100% sure about Mazda's trophy count, but I know they know they're racing heritage when they put Z-rated tires on just about every car they sell, econobox or not.
Any thing that Audi has entered in it has changed the entire look of. I love that when then try a race they do not do what everyone else is going but find a better, smarter solution to the same problem. good show Leo
I REALLY am honored that you all liked this topic so well. Trust me [and ask JF to confirm] I never really know if I'm hitting it well or popping out [.....baseball spring training is on, so such analogies are in].
Toyota no real sucess in nascar yet??? are you kidding me?... i'm sorry but who won the most races in the 2009 season?...Kyle Busch... and what car does he drive? the #18 M&M's TOYOTA... oh yeah who won the Manufacturers Title last year in nascar... TOYOTA!!!! Leo... you need to brush up on your facts mate... Toyota is Legit in NASCAR
NOT in Sprint Cup. Chevy WON 2009 Manufacturer's Title - 262pts 18 wins. Toyota WAS 2nd, 207pts, 11 wins [but those 11 were 1/2 Toyota's 21 total since they joined when? 2007?], Ford 164, 3 wins, Dodge 159pts, 4 wins.
Truck M Title, where T is ONLY manufacturer still giving those teams support? But, Hornaday, in a Chevy, won Driver's Title.
Oops you forgot the real racing, GROUP B RALLY CARS, common man you must have noticed it first hand, the quattros, RS 200 and you forgot LANCIA. yeah I should have remained in the 80's.
Who shouldn't be racing: USF1. I wish they stop lying that they can race and that they're OKAY. They're not. This slot in the grid should be awarded to those who deserve it.
My father worked for Ford Motor Company for 30+ years. I can honestly say that Ford, by in large, paid for my existence. I just wanted to thank you for giving Ford the respect it deserves. My first car was a 1965 Mustang 289 so I know a little something about Powered By Ford. Once again thank you all for the FoMoCo props.
Oh and audi and peugot are also classic icons...and who could forget lancia back in the days? isn't someone going to try and bring back that brand? that would be cool
good shakedown leo, now cars that should race: tvr (drifting series), hyundai should definitely get into the fold now more than ever, lotus should get back into the fold again soon, and nissan should be making some gtr gt class cars...alfa shoudl really get back to it as well...as for best racing/icons, ferrari, porche, mazda (think about the 787) they should remake one of those...cars that have lost the edge, well teh biggest is subaru, get your act together guys!
Racing is so important for brand image and tech development. No one wants a eco bucket that gets 50 mpg because there boring. People buy them because they need a car like that not because they want one. If were truly to be driving a bunch of eco/electric machines then show me them performing. Otherwise ill stick to my mustangs and vettes and chalk the fuel bills up to the fun category.
what i will be really interesting is the new 32v 5.0 mustang. its pushing 412hp stock, what it puts on the tracks and what the cost of building to hi-pro specs will also be interesting. yes i am dif. a ford guy, but i have to say i wanted to see the out look for nissan lately. the new skyline gtr is a beast in some aspects, its in a supercar class without the price tag of one, yes the zr-1 beat it on every level but only by a bit... i really want to see more from nissan for sure
I would have to AUDI, just because they try new things all the time yes others do that too but they still have the same template under there new ideas, like ferrari. Also I would like to mention FORD i believe they can make really good race cars but they dont seem to try enough times, I would like them to get more involved in different races and they are starting to do just that. Also like Porsche they should transfer more of their tech to their road cars.
Icons= Porsche & Farrari. Good= all brands, Bad= gimickery & limited circuit brands, Good+= Chevy, Ford, & Mazda, Disappointments= BMW, Most anticipated= GTR in American curcuit? Biggest newsense= Porsche cup class in ALMS, Nascar, Most changed= F1, DTM needs more brands, Foriegn races need more coverage. R/C racing should be televised
also i think the new genesis might be a new force i really don't think its going to be to huge but, it will be interesting to see how Hyundai test new water...
and where was chevy in all of this oh yeah they where making commercials about how they out do toyota and honda on on mpg's lol. but really i can't wait for the focus rs.
Nissan is that brand that not a lot of people consider (me not included) to be a big racing force. But thats just silly. I mean their Z cars were very very good in IMSA, JGTC or Super GT as its now called was created because of the sheer dominance of the r32 skyline gtr. The Nissan Group C cars were amazing. The R390 GT1 was absolutely spectacular. The 240sx is usually the first thing that pops into anyones mind if drifting is mentioned. Oh yeah and V8 supercars-skyline gtr created that as well.
Only problem with Nissan is that they have no grassroots support. That being said a well prepped Nissan should not be F***ed with or taken lightly in any way. In that respect I love Mazdas, very cheap and easy to start racing, they have a great grassroots racing support. Ford is cool. Their mustang program is cool, but factory backed stuff get pricey fast. Aston is amazing if you have the cash. For me it would be Nissan because it is the most accesible for me to go racing in, and win.
@xdsk0x I totally agree with you. Lots of brands are good at different types of racing. You can't just come up with one brand that the best in all.
Hats off to all the brands that invest money, effort and time and are pushing the limits, cause at the end of the day we are the ones who benefit from this - having all this high tech in our everyday cars.
I know those trucks. I may sound catty to Toyota, but those were sooo far away from Toyotas, Toyota-built, or Toyota-engineered that..... they earn partial credit.
You where absolutely correct in mentioning Gran Turismo. You should have also mentioned Forza Motorsport. Most of the cars you showed no matter the series appear in FM.
I REALLY want Ford to return to F1. American based this time (acquire USF1 maybe?) They have the name for F1. Plus with an American base, they can influence F1 in the US again. But first F1 has to stop getting close to becoming a spec series
Hi Leo let me just tell you your the man and one of the manufactures I'll like to see is Nissan they have make great sport cars better then toyota like there fairlady Z or nissan skyline GTR with everybody knows in granturismo with it could go compete with Porches and didn't they compete on Le mans with there 300zx ? Well that's one of my peak but I'll like to know if they did compete on Le mans ?
@FLD, Hey Leo, I'm liking this more n more. The length of the detail is right on. keep the good stuffs coming! + also, wat is the toyota rally sliding turbo vent? I couldn't find anything about it on google for 2mins.

toyota should kill nascar to be fair.

GT40?

ford has become a rally force, and the mustang is doing well in Drifting(if you call that racing)... and don't forget way back in the day of the model t, who invented producing vehicles anybody can buy... same concept today w/ the fiesta, GT, & cosworth
Inv4derxXx 1 year ago
I don't call drifting racing... the Mustang is not a sports car it's a poser car. I love WRC and I realize that ford has done very well but still comparing Ford to Ferrari and Porsche when it comes to motorsport contributions... i'm sorry to say but it's just silly. Ford made the car big back in the day... but Mercedes invented it!
shadman1911 1 year ago
thats why you see so many mercedes driving around compared to ford... ford also didn't get bailed out, and they arent comparing it to ferrari and porsche, those cars are on a whole other level... and i honestly think that ferrari and porsche have serious competition with the maytech gt1.
Inv4derxXx 1 year ago
Along the years so much brand atempted to get up there and that's a good thing because it keeps them awake and pushing the technology further... look at where Porsche is with there hybrid racing technology in the 911 GT3R hybrid (racing car) and the 918 Spyder concept revealed today ... years ahead anything! In months these technology will be winning races.
shadman1911 1 year ago
thats why porsche is legendary racing, and ford is just best in racing... legendary means they will never be forgotten if they go under, people kinda forgot about the ford gt until leo brought it up

Nissan should be serious about racing here in the US likethey have in Japan. They are a force in the JGTC. BMW are good on SCCA. Honda should jump into racing but they dont have weapons to get in the fight. The tuner houses should jump in too I know its gonna be extra pricy for them but think of all the press and people who would know about your shop and accomplishments.
hirevinrs4 1 year ago
i think that VW should start racing really big because since they own many companies all the companies will benefit from their knowledge and effort.
another car that i would like to see get into racing is gumpert, i heard they were a good brand and they should up their name by racing, they wouldn't really need to change anything in their car.
alexandrelejoly17 1 year ago
in a sense vw is in it with audi. they of cose there more expensive cars
goldengun74 1 year ago
Mazda is on top. They want you to race their products and give really deep discounts to racers like no other company I have seen. So why I don't have a mazda anymore I have to wonder.

porsche and audi should join f1 instead of economically strapped teams that cannot even make the track let alone the starting grid. in general, i think FIA sanctioned leagues should be left to the teams who have the most cash to throw around, because that is how you get racing technology (which these days is more safety and energy efficiency than anything else) into road cars.

Hell to the yes! Bring back the Stratos!

Definatly Mitsubishi and Subaru
they almost single handedly made Japanese sports cars cool down here in Australia.

Toyota is Legit in NASCAR
crossfaderox 1 year ago
Wait a minute on the facts, sarah.
Nationwide, u r right Busch + T's 1st mgfr title.
But, top series? NO! Come on.....

good shakedown leo, now cars that should race: tvr (drifting series), hyundai should definitely get into the fold now more than ever, lotus should get back into the fold again soon, and nissan should be making some gtr gt class cars...alfa shoudl really get back to it as well...as for best racing/icons, ferrari, porche, mazda (think about the 787) they should remake one of those...cars that have lost the edge, well teh biggest is subaru, get your act together guys!

Racing is so important for brand image and tech development. No one wants a eco bucket that gets 50 mpg because there boring. People buy them because they need a car like that not because they want one. If were truly to be driving a bunch of eco/electric machines then show me them performing. Otherwise ill stick to my mustangs and vettes and chalk the fuel bills up to the fun category.

what i will be really interesting is the new 32v 5.0 mustang. its pushing 412hp stock, what it puts on the tracks and what the cost of building to hi-pro specs will also be interesting. yes i am dif. a ford guy, but i have to say i wanted to see the out look for nissan lately. the new skyline gtr is a beast in some aspects, its in a supercar class without the price tag of one, yes the zr-1 beat it on every level but only by a bit... i really want to see more from nissan for sure
funnybob88 1 year ago
I would have to AUDI, just because they try new things all the time yes others do that too but they still have the same template under there new ideas, like ferrari. Also I would like to mention FORD i believe they can make really good race cars but they dont seem to try enough times, I would like them to get more involved in different races and they are starting to do just that. Also like Porsche they should transfer more of their tech to their road cars.

ferrariguy357 1 year ago
Nissan is that brand that not a lot of people consider (me not included) to be a big racing force. But thats just silly. I mean their Z cars were very very good in IMSA, JGTC or Super GT as its now called was created because of the sheer dominance of the r32 skyline gtr. The Nissan Group C cars were amazing. The R390 GT1 was absolutely spectacular. The 240sx is usually the first thing that pops into anyones mind if drifting is mentioned. Oh yeah and V8 supercars-skyline gtr created that as well.
ztunelover 1 year ago
Only problem with Nissan is that they have no grassroots support. That being said a well prepped Nissan should not be F***ed with or taken lightly in any way. In that respect I love Mazdas, very cheap and easy to start racing, they have a great grassroots racing support. Ford is cool. Their mustang program is cool, but factory backed stuff get pricey fast. Aston is amazing if you have the cash. For me it would be Nissan because it is the most accesible for me to go racing in, and win.

Hats off to all the brands that invest money, effort and time and are pushing the limits, cause at the end of the day we are the ones who benefit from this - having all this high tech in our everyday cars.
