My Grandfather and Uncle both lost their beach houses in Gilchrist during Ike. It was my favorite place in the world to go during summer vacation. It really sucks. I still go down there every summer....just nowhere to stay. Fishin has still been good down there....duck hunting too...
It´s so sad!! My God!! how many people have died so far in the US because of Ike? I think the US government doesn´t want the public to know te real situation in Texas, the information we have is that only 60 people have died. It´s so terrible! first Katrina, now Ike, what´s next?
Why would the " Government " not want us to know? I live down here and we were warned over and over to get out. Those that stayed and paid with their life had nothing to do with the government being at fault. It had everything to do with their own stupidity. The real situation is its bad but it could have been worse. Yes people died but thats what happens if you think you can take on a natural disaster without using good common sense. " Leave Before the storm comes " and live another day.
For the record, Katrina was not the fault of the government either. It was a large scale natural disaster that No one has ever had to deal with before but it was predicted by smart people that it would happen eventually. When you build a large city on sinking ground, you are asking for trouble. The way the inner city people acted was the problem. We got hit hard with Rita, Gustav and Ike yet we maintained our civility and are rebuilding with out blaming others.
Are you really from Bolivar? It dosnt sound like it. If you were from there you wouldnt say it was their own stupidity. If you were from there you would be worried about your friends that stayed behind (most because hwy 87 was jammed(I bet you didnt know that)because 87 flooded long before the news people said it would. Those old timers had been there forever, and this was not their first hurricane by a long shot. Cat 2 no problem, most had ridden out Alicia a cat three. Shame on you....
No I'm not from Boliver. I'm from Southwest Louisiana just about 80 miles to the east of Boliver. We were notified to get out before the water started rising as all along the gulf coast were. I do feel bad for the people who died but when you put your personal possessions importance (thats why most people don't want to evacuate) above preserving your well being then expect the unexpected.
The bad thing was that the residents of the bolivar penninsula were told that they had till noon on that friday to evacuate. The only road out had been jam packed for 24 hrs. By the time most tried to get out it was too late! Most didn't stay because of stuff, they stayed because they had no family and no place to go....and heck the had ridden out Alicia who was much stronger than Ike right? These were good people. nuf' said.
I lived in Crystal Beach and it wasnt my stupidity that kept me from leaving in my opinion it was clearly the governments fault they said we had until noon on friday well guess what i tried to leave at 3am and the roads were underwater and this was our fault???
I lived in the Cameron area and my common sense was screaming at me to leave way before the day before the storm was to arrive. Especially after what Rita did to us. I don't think we are a bunch of puppets who are supposed to be led around waiting for someone to tell us what we are supposed to do. Anyway, the government is nothing more than an extension of me and you, they are not "professional" decision makers. Thats been proven for the last 200 years. We elect um to be our voice is all.
ok when the government tells u that u have until noon to leave they are saying that is when the hurricane is in full force, they begged people to leave days before the hurricane, mean dont stay until the last second!. i left 2 days before the hurricane when i could have left at noon. i just wasnt stupid enough to wait until the last few hours.
Yep,ur so0o RiGHT...I HIGHLY believe MUCH MORE than 60 people died!!! I don't believe it...are they even counting the HUGE amount of people who completely VANiSED in Bolivar and surrounding areas?!!
Really sad. My prayers go out to all whose lives have been devastated by Ike. Thank you for the video. There is so little news coming out of the damage in that area.

One bright morning in the middle of the night
Two dead boys began to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other
A deaf policeman heard the noise
And came to kill the two dead boys
If you don't believe my story's true
Ask the blind man, he saw it too
