Thanks, and I wish I knew when it was. I think it was during one of those "Murray the K" or other DJ hosted event with 6 shows a day at the Village Theater. I only discovered the original super 8 film a few years ago and the can wasn't marked.
Thanks for this video! I do believe I attended this show, do you have an exact date? I know I saw them in a series of five concerts in November 1967. I was about to turn 11. Me and my Dad went to lots of Who shows together in that era and it continued until about 1974.
I attended the first ever in NYC ,The WHO & The Cream performance at the Murray the K's RKO 59th St. R&R show in about '66 or '67( I think it was ''66, cause I was still in the Air Force at that Easter Show).....I do remember walking out thinkin' WTF was that! I was straight at this show! Later on after a few trips with Tim Leary , I really became a fan of them both....but at that show it was just noise to me!!!

The Fillmore? LOL! Come on, kids! This is the original studio take with Jimmy Page on guitar! Yessir, Jimmy "Led Zeppelin" Page!! Just check out that fact before your start pissing your pants...:-)
You obviously don't know your shit either, Jimmy Page didn't play any part in this song, but rather he did play on the B-side, which was "Bald Headed Woman."
You should really try and get all the facts there Ungarn - Page was indeed present at the session but it was Townshend who played the parts on "I Can't Explain" including the solo. PT wouldn't let him use his 12 string Rick. Page did add some of the fuzz parts on the flipside "Bald Headed Woman" - this according to Page and Townshend as well as Shel Talmy (producer)
go ahead though and enjoy your moment in the "I'm oh so wrong even though I thought I was right" spotlight anyway -
This was a fantastic live period of The Who in transition. Too bad not much has survived in the way of audio or video. Thanks for this clip. Did somebody said they met Ginger Baker and he was sweet? He seems like a total dick from the interviews I've seen. Maybe he was less bitter back then. Nowadays he's all about putting down other musicians of the time and saying he didn't get enough credit for songwriting in Cream.
yeah i agree with you..it's a real shame that nothing but these short 8mm videos or some bootleg recordings are survived. the years 1967-68 have been a gold period for the who
Barry Fey put just about everybody in Denver through the years '67-'97 and The Who in '70 was the finest gigs he ever saw, over everybody includin' Led Zep in their first USA gig coming up at 40 years ago this December.
I saw them at the Filmore when they were held over by popular demand when one of them got arrested because there was a second alarm fire raging in the deli next door and a fire marshall jumped on stage to clear the house and got kicked in the balls and knocked into the audience. Ticket was $5.50
Its moon and you knowe it--you can say stuff about pete , it was the band, lest they did WHOS NEXT, and you know came after it-- like to hear all your guitars, i play live, you people sit on the computer and put yer point, prove it or shut up!! Play it and do it quick, or go home and stay in the garage- i will kick your ass!!!
were they playing my generation? cause i havent seen a video on youtube with explosions for cant explain and pete playing his guitar on the mic stand..i saw that for my generation though...
I have seen them live many times since the late 60's (in London) and it's true that they always saved the explosions for the last song, which was usually My Generation - but C/E synched up perfectly so I used it. If Pete or Roger are ever on YouTube, maybe they can clear this up.
Nice!...I've been Looking for videos wth the whos performances on Murray The K. They filmed it for TV too..this looks like you been shoot this stuffs cause there's no sound..great video!..if you have anymore videos with the who please upload them...
8mm looks good on youtube a guy in my class snuck an 8mm camera into Fillmore East when the Jefferson Airplane was rehersing but they took the film away from him maybee Wofgangs Vault has it.
There are? from what ive read and heard from bootlegs the 74 tour wasnt completely up to snuff for the band and pete in particular. Still they played stuff like waspman on the MSG dates.Good luck looking for the super 8's
You are correct! Thanks for clarifying. I did shoot it myself, at age 21. Had just come back from England where I saw them in clubs. I think this was their US debut. Do you know?
the first shows they did where for murray the k in march 67 at the rko theatre in new york. they then returned to play monterey in june, toured with hermans hermits in late summer, and then toured on their own later that year.
just a student! i'm in england, and wasnt around at the time! one thing i'm really after is film of the who at madison square garden in june 1974. if anyone reads this and knows of the whereabouts of super 8's of these shows (there are some) please get in touch!!
I was at their NYC debut in March 1967 at the RKO 58th street. They played with Cream. They only did two songs per set, Happy Jack and My Generation. Tore the house down about five shows each day for nine days, I believe. I went two days and stayed for two sets each day.
A few months later, after Monterey, they played the Village Theater(which Bill Graham bought in March 1968 and super renovated into the Fillmore East.)
i was at that murray the k show too. it was on the saturday before easter sunday 1967. the headliner was mitch ryder. the next day we went to the first be-in in central park. cream was there walking around and missed a few of their perfomances at the RKO. murray was pissed. saved the program from that show which also featured smokey robinson, wilson pickett, simon and garfunkle, and others. all that for about $3.50 in a movie theater. we never knew we had it so good and now it's gone.
I was also at that RKO show and I got to meet Cream and Keith Moon. I was the only one at the stage door when they came out. I took their pictures and they were so sweet especially Keith Moon and Ginger Baker
