My brothers and I are making a live action video series, where I play the main antagonist, who fights with a scythe much like this. This is going to help me get the idea of how to use one more since I normally only use spears. ^w^ thanks

@KumoKojiki Its not a slice weapon, its a sweep weapon, but the poke is used to create distance between you and the target....also though its not shown through this model It as designed with the intention of being used like a pole arm, any scythelike weapon I would use, would have a sort of spear point...anyways this is old, watch dragonslayers 3 it has a scythe thats more reasonable.
So where did you get this? Also, may I ask if you know where to get a sharp one, in case I feel a gun isn't badass enough when someone tries to break in my house lol.

@animeOmega125 I built it myself. It is a terribly weighted sloppy piece of work to be honest. Check out my video Dragonslayers 3 for the newer design. Esentialy you take a scythehead, or a piece of wood shaped to look like a scythe head for practice sparring...and connect it to a long pole...in this case sadly it was a branch. Granted i wasnt gunna spend money on something i knew would be cheap...so I instead redesigned it learning from this model.

@EvangelionFan I would post vids, but it broke back when i lived in California. I swung it into a tree while trying to avoid hitting my friend. But i was pretty good with that thing. The blade weighed about 17 pounds, same as my backpack.
lol the videos a little long, but if I had a scythe I'd be playing with it in my backyard too. And that's probably exactly how I'd look swinging it around. :P
You gotta learn somehow...its not like there is much of anything on scythe combat in existance, save a couple of peasant fighting techniques from the middle ages (sadly the text was lost all we have are the pictures)

Pretty nice video. I can see you practise a lot, and you really like the scythe. Can't blame you, it's an awesome weapon! However, you still lack something. Your movements don't flow as they should. You must fuse with your weapon. Stop thinking, and just attack as you want, let the movements just flow. That's the difference between a good warrior and a master
I understand that but one must learn the basics before he can start to use his own enginuity. I need to learn the balance and use of the weapon myself seeing as there are no real tutorials to a generaly fake style of scythe. Moveing without thinking is blind flailing, its knowing what you have to do without agknowledging it with your mind that you must attain, make reactions instant. And use youyr brain to strategise how to ensnare your opponent.

And all I can say is: keep practising. Keep posting videos, they'll be even better than this one. But remember, be one with your weapon. If you train long and hard enough, you can make it. When you can't see where you end and your weapon begins, you know you're prepared...

That is not quite so. I train with several weapons but my weapon of choice is the warhammer. It's pretty damn hard to achieve speed with a warhammer, so all you can do is master the skill of the weapon and, in case of such a big weapon, the strategy is: attack first. You just have to be careful not to leave open areas in your body, which is easily done with a small movement of the shaft. As long as you are one with your weapon, no one can defeat you
HAHAHA I would love to spare you with that concept. You can have you warhammer and strength, I'll use a Katana with me speed. Your too predictable, and the more weight you have behind your swing the easier it is for me to counter it. Not to mention you are not even using the Scythe correctly, all you are doing is swinging it too close to you to be effective seeing as its a longer ranged weapon. You have no weight behind it, nor any form.
You have no idea what you're talking about, have you? A katana takes decades of practise just to learn the basics correctly, whereas a warhammer has simple principles which can be mastered in much fewer years. Beside, the point of a warhammer is not allowing the other person to strike, therefore the katana is rendered useless. And the katana has zero blocking ability, so the warhammer gets through your sword and ribcage as if they were butter.
you forget, or maybe dont know, a warhammer was never a completely effective weapon. very slow, with no guarentee you'd actually make a killing blow, if you had the time or strength to strike very quickly.
so, that guy is probably right, an experienced fighter with a hammer VS one with a sword like a Katana wouldnt work too well... although not a Katana, because that's kind of gay.
Mind you, a warhammer is not like those you see on Warcraft. The head weighs 10kg tops, and it is roughly the size of a forearm. Well in the case of A warhammer, No it will not Shatter a shield unless its wooden, it would dent it, And if blocked correctly hes correct, it will be deflected EASILY, A lighter Warhammer however would destroy a katana, Keep the onslaught and the sword wont be able to keep the block up. A katana may be usefull but against a lighter warhammer you would be destroyed
lock if your using a katana id say if you dodge and keep your enemy moving the guy with the hammer would tire and eventually you could get at him with a sword
oh i know i know. The twirls are but a simple flashy show so as to liven it up. A bit of kenvert styleized works and some simple spins add to the whole display alot. not to mention its fun ^ ^
^ ^ does not mean its worthless in practice. a scythe if used as a weapon of battle would need a double edged blade yes. But in use it would be most effective as a pole arm such as a halbred, straight staved with a spearpoint on top. it would not be a scythe anymore in actuality. Everyone needs to bash it because they see it as idiocy, but the weapon being modefied now between me and my friends will be fine for use in battle.

Very slow, Noobish fighting display. The trick with long weapons is the speed in each swing, then the change-up in direction catches the target off guard, All i see here is a dude in a wife-beater, spinning a rather long stick around in circles, then like a baseball bat. 1/5
its a simple kata....not my fighting style. its a medatateive form. Its used more like a spear in battle because of the heavy top end. the trick to long off weight weapons is to let momentum do its work. the straight staff scythe is too offbalance to be used in sweeping motions too much. its mainly used for stabs with the spike on the end.
The reason its slow is because im learning there isnt exactly a scythe school.
Hes just a kid on youtube lookin to fill his small ego is all ^ ^ i use this as a training weapon its heavy yes but i use it slowly it builds and tones muscle and also allows for more precise learning of moves i have a new scythe we actualy made with twin heads, works MUCH better :D ill do some faster movements in later vids once i get it all down
Actualy I thought it would just make it weighted wierd but it works out exceptionaly well i have to say. I used it a bit and i like it, it allows fore rapid changes in direction. i mean obviously its a scythe itll be a slower weapon because its a longer heavier weapon but it works quite well.

PFF XD well we built the weapon and it is nicely weighted. Its a lighter weapon though, so its more of a how you say elusive strike style, so as not to direct too much on the wooden haft. were modifying weapon designs and hopefully may have a strong and useable scythe prototype for a straight handled weapon soon :D its not realy a scythe right now, more of a scythelike weapon.
hey, i see your improving your moves with the scythe, just wanna say that you should try to use the scythe blade as a hook, youll see it works better when in a battle, well after all the difference between a stick and a scythe its the bladed hook. luck with your training,

Always a good idea, i need to make a stronger scythe though for the actual use of the hook in sparing.....the only problem with that however is i use the scythe blade to cut yes, but its used as a pary for blades, when i hook a person it leaves me open....i use it to ensnare arms and or swords, to get behind their guard, rather than grab the person with it.
do you think I could make one out of would that would be able to withstand regular (every day) training? (fighting an opponent with a wooden sword or any other weapon, made of wood)
i made it out of wood...it takes a lot of reinforcement, and you need to tighten the scythe head after every sparring match but it works. im thinking of makeing a descent one soon.
u'r actualy talking about a spear that has a kana blade on 1 side & it's used just like a normal spear ,the kama like blade is just for pulling riders of their horses & stuff like thst

Yes i have, not sparring with swords, ive been in a real hand to hand fight, in the city i got jumped by 3 people. dont go sayin im inexpierienced. and im sorry i keep the old blade arts alive. Yeah ive used guns before, yeah im expierienced with them. I do this out of a form of MEDITAION and physical training. im not thinking im gunna go and get in a giant war between knights or LARP in some bullshit DnD nerd convention. its a medatative and very physical form of excercise.

Um renji, if you get hit with a scythe you'd die as well. You seem quite insulting to this guy. I myself have begun trying to develop some scythe fighting tactics, and it's very rare to see, as well as highly ridiculed. You cant be taken seriously without showing others a real combat example and working at it. I commend this guy's guts to post this on youtube, and guts to pursue the under appreciated and ridiculed tool of death himself :] the scythe can be a great weapon, don't give up!

On another note, the only people who have ever used the scythe as a weapon were the Pols and Germans, and they turned them into spears.
Er, this isn't a flame. I grew up in a rather rural area and seen quite a bit of ye olden farm equipment. I got sucked into scythe fights on youtube and I haven't seen a real scythe yet. You just so happened to be the one I left comments on. Nothing personal.
Okay i know its not, its what i do for comments...and just to say yes it is not a true scythe, but also its not just pols and germans, there is a type of scythe derived from japan, it is infact the blade of a kama, with a length of about 1.5 to 2 feet in length fixed on a straight poll and was used in combat...i would like to get my hands on a real farming scythe, and also get my hands on one of those Kama blade pole arms. Both of which were combined in the formation of the actual scythe weapon.
If you're making one, at least build it close to the weight and balance (or lack thereof) of a real scythe. Farmers didn't get a reputation for being tough by riding tractors. Using a scythe is back breaking work, the center of balance is right below the head and the handles are almost on the opposite end of the shaft (it's not a straight staff). You could find a real one in a flea/farmer's market and add some high density foam to the blade for safety.
Thank you on the information for both of your posts. I will try out the actual farming scythe but also want to try that poll arm i talked about. The scythe itself isnt meant for sweeping movements shown here, its meant for use as a spear, the scythe head used to parry and grab at its opponents...in essence with the intigration of a hook and a small hammer on the other end, and a spear point, plus a double edge on the scythe head, it could be the perfect melee weapon.
very nice work with the staff, but as far as using a scythe would go you need a lot of work, the blade is there for a reason, and the whole time i was watching you practice with the sycthe (the reson i clicked this vid) i kept thinking - looks awkward, like he shouldn't have the blade on there- then i realized the vid was mostly about the staff in action ^_^
Okay yes I DO need lots of work with the scythe...i havnt touched one in about a year....but the scythe blade is mainly meant for parying rather than fighting, if you use the blade it leaves large openings...the hammer and spike at the end are the main weapons....even though it doesnt seem so

if you modify it so it's a polearm, like a halberd with a long blade, that would work.
remember that no army have ever won a battle on weapon twirling, make sure you don't hit any one you don't want to...
and also, keep a good distance, if someone gets too close to you and you have a pole arm it's all over

'tis for farming and gardening
hence why the sharp edge is on the inside curve...
Only usful in combat if you get a direct hit on an enemy, even then you couldn't follow through with the swing... it would get stuck

Hes just a kid on youtube lookin to fill his small ego is all ^ ^ i use this as a training weapon its heavy yes but i use it slowly it builds and tones muscle and also allows for more precise learning of moves i have a new scythe we actualy made with twin heads, works MUCH better :D ill do some faster movements in later vids once i get it all down

Does the one with twin heads balance each other out? Like when you swing, are you able to double up on another attack easily and hastily?

Actualy I thought it would just make it weighted wierd but it works out exceptionaly well i have to say. I used it a bit and i like it, it allows fore rapid changes in direction. i mean obviously its a scythe itll be a slower weapon because its a longer heavier weapon but it works quite well.

Im glad to find some scythe art videos here,the scythe is my favorite weapon and apparently people dont really talk about it as lot so awsome job :D,and a scythe with twin heads sorta sounds scary so be careful :o,lol i sound like my mother at that last part XD

PFF XD well we built the weapon and it is nicely weighted. Its a lighter weapon though, so its more of a how you say elusive strike style, so as not to direct too much on the wooden haft. were modifying weapon designs and hopefully may have a strong and useable scythe prototype for a straight handled weapon soon :D its not realy a scythe right now, more of a scythelike weapon.

hey, i see your improving your moves with the scythe, just wanna say that you should try to use the scythe blade as a hook, youll see it works better when in a battle, well after all the difference between a stick and a scythe its the bladed hook. luck with your training,

Always a good idea, i need to make a stronger scythe though for the actual use of the hook in sparing.....the only problem with that however is i use the scythe blade to cut yes, but its used as a pary for blades, when i hook a person it leaves me open....i use it to ensnare arms and or swords, to get behind their guard, rather than grab the person with it.

how did you make your scythe? wood?
do you think I could make one out of would that would be able to withstand regular (every day) training? (fighting an opponent with a wooden sword or any other weapon, made of wood)

i made it out of wood...it takes a lot of reinforcement, and you need to tighten the scythe head after every sparring match but it works. im thinking of makeing a descent one soon.

u'r actualy talking about a spear that has a kana blade on 1 side & it's used just like a normal spear ,the kama like blade is just for pulling riders of their horses & stuff like thst

Okay one i cant afford a custome made weapon such to a scythe of that type, im in college bud i have my future to worry about before this, and two piece of wood can be almost as lethal as the blade, come on i crack you over the head and well see if its lethal.

Lifes not DnD and why conect it to that? and actually this scythe here, the whole straightarmed scythe came from a combonation of the farming scythe, and the Japanese kama bladed pole arm.

Yes i have, not sparring with swords, ive been in a real hand to hand fight, in the city i got jumped by 3 people. dont go sayin im inexpierienced. and im sorry i keep the old blade arts alive. Yeah ive used guns before, yeah im expierienced with them. I do this out of a form of MEDITAION and physical training. im not thinking im gunna go and get in a giant war between knights or LARP in some bullshit DnD nerd convention. its a medatative and very physical form of excercise.

Um renji, if you get hit with a scythe you'd die as well. You seem quite insulting to this guy. I myself have begun trying to develop some scythe fighting tactics, and it's very rare to see, as well as highly ridiculed. You cant be taken seriously without showing others a real combat example and working at it. I commend this guy's guts to post this on youtube, and guts to pursue the under appreciated and ridiculed tool of death himself :] the scythe can be a great weapon, don't give up!

On another note, the only people who have ever used the scythe as a weapon were the Pols and Germans, and they turned them into spears.
Er, this isn't a flame. I grew up in a rather rural area and seen quite a bit of ye olden farm equipment. I got sucked into scythe fights on youtube and I haven't seen a real scythe yet. You just so happened to be the one I left comments on. Nothing personal.

Okay i know its not, its what i do for comments...and just to say yes it is not a true scythe, but also its not just pols and germans, there is a type of scythe derived from japan, it is infact the blade of a kama, with a length of about 1.5 to 2 feet in length fixed on a straight poll and was used in combat...i would like to get my hands on a real farming scythe, and also get my hands on one of those Kama blade pole arms. Both of which were combined in the formation of the actual scythe weapon.

If you're making one, at least build it close to the weight and balance (or lack thereof) of a real scythe. Farmers didn't get a reputation for being tough by riding tractors. Using a scythe is back breaking work, the center of balance is right below the head and the handles are almost on the opposite end of the shaft (it's not a straight staff). You could find a real one in a flea/farmer's market and add some high density foam to the blade for safety.

Thank you on the information for both of your posts. I will try out the actual farming scythe but also want to try that poll arm i talked about. The scythe itself isnt meant for sweeping movements shown here, its meant for use as a spear, the scythe head used to parry and grab at its opponents...in essence with the intigration of a hook and a small hammer on the other end, and a spear point, plus a double edge on the scythe head, it could be the perfect melee weapon.

very nice work with the staff, but as far as using a scythe would go you need a lot of work, the blade is there for a reason, and the whole time i was watching you practice with the sycthe (the reson i clicked this vid) i kept thinking - looks awkward, like he shouldn't have the blade on there- then i realized the vid was mostly about the staff in action ^_^

Okay yes I DO need lots of work with the scythe...i havnt touched one in about a year....but the scythe blade is mainly meant for parying rather than fighting, if you use the blade it leaves large openings...the hammer and spike at the end are the main weapons....even though it doesnt seem so
