hey donkface.....to answer your question, it's because people who don't normally listen to jazz watched that movie and they liked what they heard....that simple genius!
why do people always have to assoiciate mulatu with broken flowers?? hes been around a lot longer than 2005 and will be remembered a lot longer than that film ever will be. I'm not hating on the film, just saying!
I miss my days in Addis, the Wube Berhara jazz bar, the Clube Alize live jazz, the Bole Road cafe, women, Stockholm Restaurant...Piazza, Saint Geroge, Buna-coffee. Ras tafari culture...
Lovely stuff, he's playing the Brighton Festival.....and I'm sad to say the first time I have tickets for it......this very much reminds me of one of my favourite 70's jazz records - Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Lands-San Francisco album, check it out if you like this laid back style.
Gasha Mulatu u are my icon... Keep on doing wat u are gifted I love all ur works. Big inspiration to All Ethiopians, we need more People like u to put Ethio on the map. Live long.
I've barely heard much of Mulatu's music and I'm endeavouring to appreciate jazz but I already find his music very beautiful and refreshing and am very much looking forward to receiving the CD I bought. Doesn't take much to realise what a genius this man is!
Love It! dis bloody song gets me straight to cloud nine.. Cant stop listening to this album, downloaded it @ DownloadMusic[.]im , () keepin listening to it wherever i go :)
interesting suggesting. serenade to a soul sister is a great album by h. silver by the way. but if you quote these songs then you must also quote duke ellington's fleurette africain as a similiar
This is definitely not a song by Mulatu Astatke, this song is nothing but a poor cover version of the great ethiopian singer Mahmout Ahmed's "Ere Mela Mela" or are they one and the same person? Mulatu Astatke and Mahmout Ahmed
I wouldn't say that. There are some striking similiarities, but I don't think it's a rip, just coincidence. I'm glad you mentioned him though, he's great. So much kick ass music from Ethiopia.
Dear Z, I am an Ethiopian, and I grew up listening to this music. The original singer ( vocalist) of the song was named Seyfu Yohannes; however , the song was indeed arranged by Mr. Mulatu Astatke several moons ago. ...And no it is not Mohamud Ahmed's " Ere mela mela". I hope this clears up the issue.
It sounds more like Horace Silver's 'Song For My Father' than anything by Mahmoud Ahmed, considering that 'Ere Mela Mela' has vocals and 'Yekermo Sew' is an instrumental. And no, Mulatu Astatke and Mahmoud Ahmed are certainly not the same person, although they are both well-known Ethiopian musicians.
@ZaitchikBegaitchik Wait a minute..Mulati is a musician and Mahammoud is a singer ..there a little bit differences Mr Mulatu astake arranged music for several 70th singers..

Totally Horace Silver's Que Pasa, Song for my father, and Senor Blues. At least the main motifs for the driving songs in Broken Flowers...
