I've seen many versions and this is not the best, but I really like his interpretation of 4:46 - 4:55. "what you started, I didn't start it". Others with better voices have failed to make an impact at this crucial moment.
Ted Neely is the best singer on this song, closely followed by Steve Balsamo. Not this fellow. As to him overacting tho, well,I dont think he is...I cant stand an actor who just sings a song without passion for his role.
I don't know...I'm just so used to that high ass scream, that when I hear someone do this and not do the scream...it just isn't the same. Great voice though, I will say that.
A good version of this song. The 2000 version that is all over youtube kinda sucks. I think this guy is much better than Steve Balsamo. Of course no one beats the origional (Ted Neeley) but onle one person can be him.... This guy (Stuart Metcalf) does a stand-up job.

Anyone who says this song doesn't need the "high note" is out of their mind...Thats part of the composition, the section does not crescendo without it. 1) Indicating I was replying to my own post: Fail 1. - 10. I was replying to yours. For clarification, this post continues from the last.
2) Drawing a conclusion of personality, gender, appearance from a persons internet username will, and probably has many times, get you into all kinds of pickles. At your advanced age, I would assume this is now deliberate. I assume this comes from years being rammed up the shithole.
3) Where did I say I was an IT programmer. Lets just leave it at that to avoid further embarrassment? Many people are either blind or stupid, or even both - But help is available! Contact your local Deaf, Blind and Stupid centre immediately to seek further help. BTW ...-20.
4) I have been called a cunt many times, but NEVER a "non-spelling, grammatical error dumb ass", and I must say I am shocked. a) Firstly, I have never seen such a poorly constructed phrase since I read my local chinese takeaway menu. I'm a "non-spelling" and "grammatical error dumb ass". I mean - that doesnt even make sense. Let me help: Try "illiterate and grammatically incorrect dumb ass." OUCH. ...did I mention that a typographical error does not constitute an ability or inability to spell. Using the word "fuckin" instead of "fucking", and "ya" instead of "you" actually DOES. So sadly, you lose more points.
5) and finally a WHOPPING -100 for repeating my outro and reversing it with rather simplistic capitilisation on "YOUR". Im sorry, but such blatant laziness is just not good enough. You might as well just say "No, you are" or "Your MUM!" - 500.

*What a waste. And to think you probably believe in yourself. Sad.*
@Eric Michael Krop...Jesus of course was far wiser than any of us..but its because the wisdom of years that I actually see Ted Neeley as being closer to it than he was in his youth...thats what works with the application of his elder years to this role. So I don't see him at all as used up, as much as more on key. On another note, and I'm sure you weren't inferring this..Ted is obviously not too old to hit the notes most cannot. I say the opposite. Let the wisdom of Teds years rule in the role.
Mr. Metcalf has definite passion in this rendition of JC. Though he can't hit the passionate highs, he makes up in character and stage presence. Very few male singers can reach those high notes. They almost must be a counter tenor in order to hit the orginal notes. This man's passion is unmitigated. He is a professional and I believe had I seen the entire show, I would have been moved. Ted Neeley is too old. Time to retire and let the youngsters take over - Eric Michael Krop - Gethsemane.
@littlesthobbo I don't have to; I'm a violinist! but when I perform pieces I make sure I can hit all the notes correctly in tune. if I can't, I don't perform it. do it right or don't do it at all.
@BringinSexyBach So if you are a musician and yet you don't feel this person deseves credit for his efforts, you must be verrrry good. Why not post something and show us. I love violin music. Otherwise,------ blow it out yer ass.
@koprej This man gave a fantastic performance. Not everyone was made to sing that part, and its best to know your limitations and and put on a flawless performance than try for something that might be sloppy or bad.
Amazing! Best I've seen since I saw Neeley onstage and the recent Broadway production, which left me cold, as the director or somebody, chose to end the music with a dud firework and nothing else as the movie and original productions did, even the album with Ian Gillian. Neeley is retiring as he is 66 or 67, if he could direct it and keep it within his deep love and feelings for Christ and give this man with his original take, I think it will comeback stronger than before.

Please watch also LAWRENCE GRAY singing "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar... Lawrence has an amazing voice and gives an impressive interpretation of this song.... Just visit my channel and it will play automatically.
@JCLAWS Ah Murray Head! No one can touch his "Heaven on their Minds" rendition. Ever since I heard him I've loved him, I even forgave him "One Night in Bangkok" because I love him so much!
The singer is fine. The bad part is that nothing of it is Rock! The beat of the music is horribly monotonous, simple and boring. Unfortunately the singer complies to this meek music style. The whole piece is disgustingly clean, polished and polite(!). To the singers defense, he was probably saving his voice to the next performance. Solution is simple. If the singer can't belt, just get some fucking guitars in there and help him out!
Beautiful performance of a magnificent song. The only "complaints" I might have are:
(1) The arrangement -- Too commercial sounding in my humble opinion, and (2) One doesn't get the feeling as with Ted Neely or Ian Gillan that the singer owns the song. More like he's renting if for an evening to be returned at the end of the show with no alterations made. Again, just my humble opinion.
this is great. it is not as good as Ted's, but then no-one is. I think people should stop saying this version is better then ted neeley or this version is better then carl anderson. truth is no-one is close to those. the reason people think other versions are better is because we are so used to hearing the film so anything that sounds great and fresh makes people think its better. but really when you sit and compare it there is no comparison. great job though.
Great Voice! -- Great passion in this performer. I, too, am accustomed to the Ted Neeley version (which I love), but this man's performance and voice is beautiful -- lovely and inspiring. I see this was posted 2006 --What's he doing now?
can you please tell me who originally sing this song on soundtrack??? I ask because in the movie from 2001 is not the same singer as on the soundtrack
Ian Gillan (lead singer for Deep Purple). You will not see him in any of the stage or movie performances only hear him on the 1970 album. This was because this was Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's first musical and in order for it to get out there they hired a lot of talented singers to lay it down on a track and knew once it was heard it would catch on.
@ludizagorac1990 - It's truth what Bunnyndisguise says, but that musical became fully famous when was interpreted by Steve Balsamo (J.C.), Zubin Varla (Judas), Joana Ampil (Mary Magdalene) and Alice Cooper (King Herod). So, it's most likely you have that soundtrack.
Here's what bothers me about several of the comments: Don't you understand how hard it is to perform live?
Please give this quality singer a break and forgive him for not reaching the 'high' notes. And in closing i'd like to say that I believe in love and follow the prophet Jesus of Nazereth, certainly not the unrecognizable Jesus of the U.S.A. Tell me, American Christians, who is this character you follow that you have named Jesus? He is not Jesus of Nazereth; of that I am certain.
@kaibybrunis What those people probably also don't realize is the fact that it was probably a choice of style... Those "high notes" in question that singers like Steve Balsamo used are done in serious head voice. This singer used chest/belt in a very high range. It just doesn't sound that way because of the vocal register he used. I'm almost 100% certain that he could be just as successful with the screaming notes if he wished to use them. Watch Colm Wilkinson's version. Probably a style choice.
@TheMullerFan Haha, I really doubt he couldn't do it at all. I could certainly be wrong, but for an adult male singer that isn't very high to do in head voice. Like I said before, compare Steve Balsamo and Colm Wilkinson's versions. Both are extremely competent singers and perfectly capable of doing it either way. This song is always open to a lot of creative liberty and preference for both the director and singer. Some don't like the screaming I suppose.

@TheMullerFan He can actually. Look at the video of "The Temple". I agree, the high notes are important. But this guy puts a lot into the performance. I can see why he was cast.
@kaibybrunis now what bothers me is the last part of your comment. how foolish can you be to stereotype all christians in the united states? that is flat out outrageous. not all us citizens are war loving, money loving, corrupt, fat assholes. i know many people who really try to be the best people they can, and i can guarentee you, they worship the true jesus christ of nazareth.
@kaibybrunis i agree on givin him a break.. because i saw a guy do this show who had a wonderful voice but could not hit the notes live annnd it ruined the show for me.... he took riskes he shouldn't have. This guy is being smart and keeping it quality
I love this song . I have uploaded a video of myself singing this song, please take a look and tell me what you think. look under Joelparker5 and its one of the first few vids.
People fail to realize that Gethsemane is NOT about the high notes. Which is why people are so taken with Steve Balsamo, who is a hack with no talent and a weak falsetto. The SCREAM is in the song to show Jesus' passion, not to showboat. This guy understands the role, sings it well, and is passionate about it. He doesn't need to scream.
I don't think Balsamo is a hack but I do agree that it isn't necessary to throw in loads of high notes. Listen to the Colm Wilkinson version of this song, he sings it with power and passion but without showboating.
I think this is quite bad., It doesn't seem to me that he actually knows what he's saying. There's no connecting to the words he's saying and his feelings. Just a lot of hands in the air,.
well, it's quite rare, but I have to agree with someone about this piece of music. It has really an important message. And as for me, this music was the little stone who started an avalanche of question and which turned me from atheist to agnostic :)
To BillyandBarry- check out subscriber RicBNH - he has downloaded the entire 1973 movie version (Ted Neely, etc) and the 2000 version - good luck with your production
no i was replying to a comment some dude made about this guys nipples, no but nothing funny about the performance, this guy did a pretty good job, but then again you cant compare with other performances such as steve balsamo's
Steve is a narcissist, who sings for himself, and certainly not provided me such an experience and compassion to role.Ostatní performance, I compared, but this was definitely the best.
Once you see Balsamo do this live up close, then you'll be saying the total opposite. His tears touch your soul. He was breathtaking, and the whole place was blown over, almost in shock afterwards, It was a powerful and heartwrenching performance. he connects totally with the Audience and his Father above who he feels has abandoned him. I feel sorry that you have not had the privilege to experience for yourself. You would change your mind. A role he did almost for 1 yr it affected him deeply.
He did great! Says his name is Stuart Metcalf. NOT Ted Neely, he owns this part, and I missed the high notes too, but this guy did absolutely great, as good as anyone could have! Wished he would have had the robe on though, makes it more realistic.
BOOO! Screamin' Neeley set the bar so either raise it or step off!!

I love this rendition! I'm a huge fan of Ted Neeley's movie performance, but this one is really great too!
supertulp 1 year ago
Beautiful performance of a magnificent song. The only "complaints" I might have are:
(1) The arrangement -- Too commercial sounding in my humble opinion, and (2) One doesn't get the feeling as with Ted Neely or Ian Gillan that the singer owns the song. More like he's renting if for an evening to be returned at the end of the show with no alterations made. Again, just my humble opinion.

Very emotional version. Who is this guy?
Yorat777 1 year ago
this is great. it is not as good as Ted's, but then no-one is.

He's good, but Ted Neely still does a better job in my opinion.

can you please tell me who originally sing this song on soundtrack??? I ask because in the movie from 2001 is not the same singer as on the soundtrack
ludizagorac1990 1 year ago
Ian Gillan (lead singer for Deep Purple). You will not see him in any of the stage or movie performances only hear him on the 1970 album. This was because this was Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's first musical and in order for it to get out there they hired a lot of talented singers to lay it down on a track and knew once it was heard it would catch on.
bunnyndisguise 1 year ago
to: bunnyndisguise... Ted Neeley's voice is not as strong as Ian Gillan's. Gillan's voice is untouchable, don't you agree!?
LilyRose236 1 year ago
@LilyRose236 Truly no one can scream as painfully as Gillan, but this performance can still bring tears to my eyes.
bunnyndisguise 1 year ago
@bunnyndisguise correction, Webber and Rice's first musical was Joseph and his techniqcolour dreamcoat.
MsRosiecakes 1 year ago

He is not Jesus of Nazereth; of that I am certain.
kaibybrunis 1 year ago 14
@kaibybrunis What those people probably also don't realize is the fact that it was probably a choice of style... Those "high notes" in question that singers like Steve Balsamo used are done in serious head voice. This singer used chest/belt in a very high range. It just doesn't sound that way because of the vocal register he used. I'm almost 100% certain that he could be just as successful with the screaming notes if he wished to use them. Watch Colm Wilkinson's version. Probably a style choice.
mailclue 1 year ago
@mailclue nah. if he didn't scream then he can't. fuck him
TheMullerFan 1 year ago
@TheMullerFan Haha, I really doubt he couldn't do it at all. I could certainly be wrong, but for an adult male singer that isn't very high to do in head voice. Like I said before, compare Steve Balsamo and Colm Wilkinson's versions. Both are extremely competent singers and perfectly capable of doing it either way. This song is always open to a lot of creative liberty and preference for both the director and singer. Some don't like the screaming I suppose.

DrFlaxWebFLOO 1 year ago 2
@DrFlaxWebFLOO
I don't think Balsamo is a hack but I do agree that it isn't necessary to throw in loads of high notes. Listen to the Colm Wilkinson version of this song, he sings it with power and passion but without showboating.

kevin25valencia 2 years ago
Steve is a narcissist, who sings for himself, and certainly not provided me such an experience and compassion to role.Ostatní performance, I compared, but this was definitely the best.
ojudic 2 years ago
Once you see Balsamo do this live up close, then you'll be saying the total opposite. His tears touch your soul. He was breathtaking, and the whole place was blown over, almost in shock afterwards, It was a powerful and heartwrenching performance. he connects totally with the Audience and his Father above who he feels has abandoned him. I feel sorry that you have not had the privilege to experience for yourself. You would change your mind. A role he did almost for 1 yr it affected him deeply.
