The boy played a VERY simplified, shortened, and highly edited version of "The Entertainer." Is a genius? Of course not. I've heard 6-year-olds play much, much better than he does.
@Caocao8888 Exactly. THAT'S what he managed to learn in three years? People are taught that prodigies are people under 8 years old that play music that's "hard for that age, typically." But if it took him three years to learn simplified versions of Rondo alla turca and The Entertainer, then he's not a prodigy, he just had an early head start at the age of 3. People are only saying he is because he's 6, but the fact is, an 11 year old that does this in less than six months...THAT'S a prodigy.
While most child prodigies rarely achieve success in adulthood, what makes young Mr Bortnick so special is his ability to create novel compositions. Let's wait and listen and give this young creative genius an opportunity to grow into his gifts before we condemn him out of our envy and ignorance.
I can't believe all the negative comments, are those of you that insecure, jealous, or you just have to belittle someone to make yourself feel better. This child has a God-given talent and should be admired for what he has accomplished and what the future has in store for him and the world. He is donating monies to many charities, is an inspiration to other children (and adults), and has an outlook on life and the world that outdistances most of us.
Undoubtedly, Ethan Bortnick is amazingly talented, but I wonder what conditions led to him being the subject of such media attention when there are countless amazingly talented children who can play just as well or better than he. I assume someone is managing him well.

And for the boy's little tune...if the key of it is C...you can't just end it in a G major chord..it's incomplete! If you're gonna write something, you need to stick to the format! I know it's "his music". Well, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Bach, they all stuck to a format! There was no structure in his piece..just kinda disorganized..
Very mature. At least the owner of this video gives a thoughtful response and refrains from using insults that are completely useless because they aren't any counter-argument, just something people use when they can't argue.
well, for a 6 year old (with no musical training and who's managed to learn everything by ear) ... "sticking to a format" might not be in his vocabulary.
Well, to compose, you need to study the composition. Just like if he were to write a novel, he needs to study the language he's going to write the novel in. Since after all, music IS a language. Why is it Mozart was able to compose at age five? Because he already knew the musical language.

@mario54671 - You're speaking in a 2010 voice. He is playing 2050 music. Get a life Mr. Perfect Format, cuz the kid has already kicked your perfect ass a thousand times.
You can't "play" 200 songs... :P You can SING 200 songs. Ahh whatever, I mean what does he know. At least this guy's better than David Letterman, who gets to political, while Jay Leno just sticks to being funny.
he needs to get a accordian

@swimrocker3 So you're saying Sviatoslav Richter and Arthur Rubinstein are just "good" musicians, lacking the "greatness" of rule-breaking?
