The media makes an issue with Sarah Palin for just about anything. Walking across the street for instance so why wouldn't they make an issue with her being a former Miss America contestant?

There are 50 states and Washington D.C. So, in that sense it has 51 states. The last 2 states to join the Union were Alaska and Hawaii. Both joined in 1959.

Washington D.C. is a federal district under the authority of congress. Washington D.C. Residents have been able to vote in Presidential elections since 1961.
