  • This is music. it goes beyond intonation and blend and balance, even though those are all there and just about perfect. This is music that speaks to the soul. Great job guys.

  • I just sub'd for a colleague this past weekend for a wind ensemble concert... This was on the program...

The tuba only plays one note, but my God is it glorious. I played this peace 7 years ago and this was a smack across the face for what true music is supposed to be about. A real refresher after so many years of intense conservatory training...

On a positive side, it looks like the tuba part in this arrangement is much more involved.

    You guys sound great, btw...

  • With a performance this good why the heck is the first row empty?

  • Now this is music.

  • who cares, it's beautiful

  • I don't understand all the arguements over instruments and what not. I played nutcracker on a Meinl & Wesson C Tuba today, then played my Bach bass trombone in my trombone trio, and tomorrow I will play euphonium for brass band. Why can't we all get along?

  • Just beautiful. Very well done.

  • People crack me up. I played in a brass quintet where we performed with a vocalist. YES A VOCALIST.... WTF YOU DOING IN A B-R-A-S-S Q-U-I-N-T-E-T, MAKING IT MORE THAN 5-PEOPLE!!!!!!!!... wait... sometimes you amend the group for artistic reasons?!?!

  • its a trombone choir people lol "they shouldve had some euphonium" "why arent there any french horns?" when you clicked on this did you expect to see anything but a bunch of trombones?

  • Everyone forgets about baritone players :( They should have added some.

  • @xBMTHotaku Trombone choir, not baritone choir. They added a tuba for the bass that a bass trombone can't bring.

  • @xBMTHotaku maybe you didnt notice that thing that said trombone choir?

  • Trombone choir they say...

THERE IS AN IMPOSTOR AMONG THEM. Anyone else notice the rogue tuba?

gtfo tuba, you don't belong in a trombone choir. you are a tuba.

  • @chreveir By all means, remove the tuba from the trombone choir if you're a fan of mediocrity.

The whole thing would have been better done with euphoniums, anyway. But this still sounds very nice.

  • @MrPoog

  • Favorite instruments: French horn, violin, trombone.

    Trombone just got moved up.

By the way, there should've been at least one french horn...I'm just sayin'...

  • I just got the Bose QC 15 headphones and listening to this and the quality of this piece is sending chills down my back. Good job guys, and y'all keep it up

  • <3

  • 1 person plays euphonium

  • @Guitarhreomaster16 i play euphonium! :( i didn't dislike this though haha

  • @Guitarhreomaster16 Uncalled for.

  • This is a piece meant only for silence peace serenity and a DAMN good group to play it and this group can do it

  • It's a tuba---played one for over 20 years. Believe me, it's a tuba. Would recognize one anywhere!

  • *listens* WOW that bass trombone sounds like a tuba! Wait...

  • i have listened to this so many times i cant even count. it is beyond beautiful. so glorious...i get the shivers when i listen to it <3

  • Hey now, that's a saxophone >.>

  • @obiwanda look a little closer ... it's a tuba. i saw a sax at first too, but it's a tuba

  • Fantastic playing! I think I like this more than the original.

  • The person who disliked this must be tone deaf.

  • What an unexpected surprise!

  • Sounds like angels are playing the song

  • Absolutely beautiful-3

  • Thanks for uploading this! Where can i get this Arrangement?

Is it written for 4 Trombones or how many u need at least?

    Thanks!

  • I arranged this for french horn ensemble. We might play it this year.

  • These are the pieces that remind us what this big ball of universe is: It's soul! It's life and love and beauty! Enrapture it! Take hold and never let go! It is yours and ours! Life is too short not to love.

  • Maybe the Baritone?

  • What is that guy playing on the far left?

  • @coolthing21 Tuba

  • im going to destroy whoever disliked...

  • That was so beautiful the most beautiful I've ever seen and heard. no wounder my friends told me to watch this i love it

  • I like the 1 tuba...im a tuba player and it was beautiful. the whole ensemble was so thick

  • mmmmmmmman....... layers and layers of sound 3:28

  • WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ART!!!!!!!

  • So beautiful.

  • 1 person plays trumpet

  • awesome !

  • This is my favorite song by any trombone choir! So beautiful :)

  • excellent tone and precision this is beautiful music

  • 4500 trombone players watched this.

  • 1 trumpet watched this video.

  • Awsome sound. Warm, rich, fully orchestrated and wonderfully played. Thanks for sharing...JT

  • Little too fast for my taste but nonetheless, very good

  • I just came all over the place.

  • Speechless. Wow!

  • This is a lovely version and wonderful players.

However, I think the conductor should note that this piece is not meant to be pulsed so explicitly. Doing so only restricted the choir's expressive capacity.

  • :21 That Chord is amazing

  • I agree. The Trombone is an amazing instrument and that is why i play it. However, it may just be me, but the slurs sounded a bit messy... :/ other than that it was pretty amazing.

  • and that right there.

that is why i chose the trombone. there is something about it that makes it different from other instruments, a certain beauty another instrument cannot replicate. this proves the trombone is not an obnoxious instrument, but a beautiful one.

yes, i was THAT KID who didn't blast in middle school or purposely sound disgusting because I thought i was disgracing the name of trombone, haha.

  • That's cheating, using a tuba

  • @GeorgeEllwanger Thats not cheating, when it's technically a bell up valve down valve trombone. It's called a cimbasso. It's a trombone.

  • @foxxiej That's DEFINITELY not a cimbasso. It's called a tuba. I've played a cimbasso, they're bells face FORWARD, and they're bells are smaller than a tubas...

  • That's cheating with a cimbasso (left)

  • I love this song alot, but I think the tempo is way to fast, and there's not as much expresiveness in the music because the conductor is kinda just trying to move the peice along. Not to bash the conductor/probably professor but this peice needs alot more attention to detail

  • Well it's not purely a trombone choir with a tuba there. Why not use a bass trombone instead? I'm just saying

  • @kyleguyhighspeed As much as I agree with you, there is a certain feel and overwhelming bass that a tuba can create that unfortunately you cannot get with a bass trombone. It's close, but it's just not the same.

  • @ivytreeproductions Oh, I agree with you completely on that. I much prefer the sound of the Tuba to the Bass Trombone. I was just saying with something being called a Trombone Choir I would most likely expect only Trombones. I love Trombone, don't get me wrong, but I prefer Euphonium and Tuba. Trombones are just not as smooth and dark sounding.

  • @kyleguyhighspeed Oh, in that case I totally agree with you.

  • In the vocal version, the higher parts stand out because of pitch and wave length and what not, but these are standing out because they are playing too loud. I agree with dixon18ify1, voices are more satisfying on this song. AND I'm a trombone player of 11 years, if that means anything.

  • Can I get the MUSIC PLEASE!!!!!

  • Liked this fine, but the addition of a tuba is disappointing. Looking for more of a consistent timbre.

  • @dlaregleep Thats not cheating, when it's technically a bell up valve down valve trombone. It's called a cimbasso. It's a trombone.

  • Tuba ^_^

  • eargasmic~

  • i am a young t bone player this is some amazing stuff

  • Cool sound, but it's not as satisfying as with voices. There is more bite to the sound with a good choir.

  • That's a really good sounding group..

    Trombones are awesome!

  • Woh its amazing! But its so fast! Why... :'(

  • @MergGates1 Too fast!? Do you want to kill these awesome trombone players? Don't you hear how each one of them is pretty much stagger breathing throughout the entire piece? Playing chords as rich as these with such a small ensemble even at this tempo takes great amounts of talent and practice time. It sounds perfect to me and I'm not a trombone player. I just know that the trombone is the closest instrument to that of the human voice and they are some of the best choirs around. :]

  • @pianist9000 I do NOT doubt that they are completely amazing. But since they are I believe they completely capable too. ive heard other choirs such as this play louder and slower, their breathing is seemless, its almost as if they dont breathe at all. These men are very talented human beings im just commenting on tempo.

  • @MergGates1 very true. I'm pretty sure they've practiced this at slower tempi and found that the tempo taken here is best. I mean I wouldn't know that but it's safe to say that not only the trombonists but also the conductor know exactly what they are doing. Just a thought.

  • @pianist9000 I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

I'm a trombonist, and this is absolutely gorgeous, but it would be better done on euphoniums. Euphonium just has a much more lyrical tone, much darker and melodic. It would fit any choir piece better than trombones. In fact, I've arranged Lux Aurumque for nine euphoniums(top five euphs interchangeable with trumpets/flugelhorns), and trombones wouldn't work nearly as well.

  • @EatsSammichesGuy It really is sad that euphoniums don't see more orchestral and even general application. I'm an oboist, and I just love euphoniums. But I suppose the orchestral instrumentation is so firmly traditional that we'll never see a euphonium in a symphony orchestra. I'm going to attempt a major in composition alongside my performance major, and should I ever see success, I'm going to make sure to employ euphoniums until their lips bleed. :)

  • @MrPoog I'm not one for bursting bubbles, but I've already started working on a few pieces of that nature :D

Mahler has at least one, Pictures at an Exhibition is one, but I'm drawing a blank for any others. There will soon be many more, though, hopefully.

  • @MergGates1 This was the year that CSU performed at the Eastern Trombone Workshop and the concert was long. So I'm guessing they played it faster so they could the rest of the concert and not be as tired.

  • @freakingsuite Play the rest of the concert and not be as tired *

  • O_O

  • 息のスピードがめっちゃあってて綺麗やー!!

  • Tears on my eyes didn't let me see the whole video.... amazing.

  • It's so elegant and beautiful. Made me cry :') This shows what greatness and beauty trombones can perform at it's highest. If only I could be this great. :)

  • @NathalieIsCoolYo

Keep trying, keep practicing. You'll get there Nathalie. And when you do it will thrill you.

  • Amen... such a beautiful and reverent song.

  • Damn good intonation and techniqe. I loved it!

If only that last chord was attacked together...not a perfectionist but that is the most difficult part of the piece. They almost lined it up but heck I loved every minute of it.

  • I play trombone for a very explicit reason...... That.

  • Heaven on Earth. Absolutely beautiful

  • Oh My Goodness. Their sounds are clean, harmonious and in tune..Hmm..the instrument on the far left is a trombone with valve keys..I think it produces the BASS sound...GO TROMBONES !!!!!

  • Oh My Goodness. Their sounds are clean, harmonious and in tune..Hmm..the instrument on the far left is a trombone with valve keys..I think it produces the BASS sound...GO TROMBONES !!!!!

  • WTF... To the far left...a trombone mated with a bassoon and had THAT!!!

  • @bigbluedevil132 That's just a regular old tuba. :-) Look at it in full screen. It's an optical illusion. really obvious at the end when he sets it down!

  • @pghica Ohh, I see, thought I was going crazy

  • Wow that is pretty ridiculous I've never seen a video with that many likes and not a single dislike. Just proof that trombones are amazing. =)

  • The cool thing about trombone is that it has a very large range and can sound clean in just about any partial. Trumpet choirs can never sound this full even if they all play on Flugelhorns.

  • O magnum + bone = tear my heart out

  • and my nigga c-jizzle

  • my nigga kearney

  • wow im in a 6th grade begining band and this makes me so jealous

  • @mikeyRD08 Haha, I think it's pretty much impossible to truely dislike the video, the trombone sound + the awesome music = tear-jerking piece that I'm definitely gonna try and get our choir to play....

  • I really want to go to this school!!!!!!!! I'm applying soon. Please accept me!

  • @lukie117 trombone and euphonium here.

  • 0 dislikes - OH YEA TROMBONE!!

  • @mikeyRD08

That's amazing...I don't think I've ever seen a video with this many ratings without a dislike

  • i play tuba and trombone

  • It's a tuba you can see it better when he sets it down.

  • Is it just me? or is that guy sitting down holding a trombone-like tuba or a tuba-like trombone? the bell seems to be trombone sized.

  • @JosiahCanFly

    its a tuba

  • 1:50 bass......oh my

  • Trombone....Its the most versatile instrument there is. We can play lead all the way down to bass...Very nice.

  • trombones rule. too bad for the cough at 3:05 :-(

  • soprano needs to be louder

  • Can anyone tell me who arranged this? I can't find it anywhere.

  • it's so soft

  • This was done a little bit too quickly for my tastes, but it still sounded amazing. Also, it's your choir, not mine, so go as quickly or as slowly as you like. Thanks for posting :D

  • @eaturtoes I agree with you. But without texts being sung, the whole song on brass might sound draggy, so I guess maybe that's why the tempo was set faster.

  • I love the choral version of this piece and was kind of irked to see it done by a trombone choir, but I really enjoyed it.

  • Beautiful

  • This is one of the greatest pieces of our generation. The trombone choir arrangement is just gorgeous.

  • nice <3

  • Absolutely stunningly beautiful! Thank you so much for posting this. I am a former member of the Illinois State University Trombone Choir, and truly love listening to this music. Trombones are the most beautiful instruments! God's Blessings. Sacred music on trombone can't get any better than this!

  • incredible

  • very beautiful

  • Actually, the top part needs more volume. The tempo needs to be slower, and everyone needs more sustained sound - but that just might be an issue of youtube not making it sound as great as it could be. Nice!

  • Every time I hear this it makes me wish I could join a trombone choir.

  • simply amazing. the depth of this sound is just incredible

  • Awesome!

  • You've got no idea how happy it makes me that this was recorded with decent microphones.

By far. the best version on youtube.

  • I love the conducting!

  • you cannot get this kind of range, tone, depth of sound, melody in any old collection of musical instruments. This is the beauty of the trombone. Listening to this on my hifi speakers, while not perfect, is like being washed over by a wave of sound.

  • -eargasms to the sound of boners-

    This is truely brillant.

  • they should TOTALLY play this with contrabass trombone instead of tuba, and maybe alto on the top part, because to me the highest part sticks out a little too much. for my tastes.

  • very beautiful

  • It's just magnificat..amazing..so sweet...¡¡¡Bravo Dr. Bradley Palmer and his Ensemble. This is celestial sound...

  • OMG this literally gave me a BONER

    Excellent playing

  • @pimpreaper A trom-BONER? I see what you did thar. ;D

  • well really, the larger the group, the slower you can take it. There's only so long you can hold a note by yourself.

  • lolz i think its funny that there's only one woman in the group. anyone down for a campaign for female trombones?

  • @SquishWisdom I saw at least two, as well as 3 or 4 people of gender made ambiguous by the low resolution. So there are at least two, and up to 6.

  • Siding with @Stoneglare , Tromone, what is it about this beautiful instrument that makes it so great?

  • cool! loved it!

  • Beautiful. The tempo is debatable... I prefer this song to be taken at a light molto legato, that is, about 72 or so. But nevertheless, at a tempo of 72 or 122, these trombones did a fantastic job.

  • un mot : Bravo

  • it's not too fast

  • just a little too fast. Besides that it was beautiful!

  • Trombones, the sexiest instrument EVER

  • @Stoneglare damm right it is lol

  • Just a little too fast... it takes the some spirit out of the work but the trombone choir sounds really good...

  • absolutely incredible in every way.

  • Loving the song, came to this with a bit of 'oh, yeah, trombones!' but I'm converted; they suit the sombre quality, if not quite the ethereal one.

  • IT'S JUST TOO FAST!!!!!!!!!!

  • beautiful... after singing the choral arrangement and loving trombone choirs and the trombone itself... this is beautiful... great sound across the group! a little slower and a tad bit more expressive would have been beautiful but great job!!!

  • What are you people talking about? If you actually look at the trombones, every single slide moves at some part. Theres no valve trombones in this choir. And the one person sitting down in the corner is quite obviously playing a Tuba, not some super uncommon instrument, most likely to get the low parts that its hard to support well with a bass trombone. Anyways very beautiful piece!!

  • I adore this sound... I'm one of the few people that likes this version more than the vocal version. I would LOVE to hear the whole song done, a bit slower too.

  • Great Piece, Great arrangement. BTW it is a Tuba

  • who cares if its a tuba or not? Everyone is forgetting how awesome this sounded.

  • @GunzTheDuel

You are correct. I could see how it could be mistaken. The lighting is funny...but it doesn't reflect off the players black shirt, creating the shadow on the instrument. Look again people!

  • I dont understand how people are seeing a cimbasso or even a valved bass trombone in this video. I am assuming Its the lighting on the TUBA (left side) bell that makes it appear as to having a trombone bell. You can see the outline of the bell rim and is most noticable when he places it down. I have a feeling most people don't know what a cimbasso even looks like. I dont intend to be mean but people, get your eyes checked!

  • ITS A TUBA! It's not even a Cimbasso. It's not too narrow at all to be a Tuba. EEb tuba's have a narrow taper. and alot of other Tuba's are narrower.

  • Some Cimbassos are wrapped in a tuba arrangement. The taper on the bell is much too narrow to be a Tuba. Although I agree, calling it a bass valve trombone is rather misleading, because Cimbassos are usually in the same octave as contra-bass trombones and tubas.

  • I believe it is called a cimbasso, and it is indeed in the trombone family.

And notice how your 30 year band director vet said "What are they?" and not "they don't exist." Just because a respectable person, very learned in the field, doesn't know what something is, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Now, go about and enjoy your Christmas. Or else.
