Indian chants. Silent Hill was built on top of old Indian burial grounds, which is one of the reasons why a lot of hauntings and incidents occur. This is from the SH3 strategy guide stashed somewhere in my bathroom. LOL!

Not really, Silent hill shows that no one is fully evil or good, but Alessa's mostly innocent.

Here her 'memory' of pain and suffering that was left behind tries to 'save' heather by killing her (that is, herself), at the time (as Alessa) she went through so much pain she was suicidal, that's what it is.

The 'monster' isn't grunged up because it's evil but because it represents pain.

The story of Silent Hill is complex; symbolism is an important part to it.

Basically (the bare bones) there's a cult in the town of Silent Hill called "The Order" and they worship this (demonic) god.

A member of the cult tried to perform a ritual to bring their god into this world via pregnancy, so she used her daughter (Alessa) as a host (to give birth to god).

The ritual is based on suffering (well the whole cult seems to be based on suffering), and so I am already running out of word count

(cont) There was an explosion in Alessa's home, she got burned really badly, with a spell, her mother (the cult member) kept Alessa alive so she could suffer more (making the ritual to bring god work better).

The ritual was actually a success (Alessa herself had tremendous psychic abilities, so that helped) but it was disturbed and Alessa split her soul in half (using her own powers) and a baby conjured up (Cheryl).

Lisa (and no, NOT Travis- whatever Origins did was a lie it was LISA who help

(cont- told you it was complex) Lisa, a nurse who took care of Alessa when she was badly burnt, brought the baby Cheryl out of the town and Harry Mason (protagonist of the first game) and his wife found Cheryl on their doorstep (I think it was).

After the lost of half of Alessa's soul, the ritual was halted and could not be fully completed unless both souls were reunited, so Dahlia performed another spell to torture Alessa so that she will call Cheryl- not going into detail on that.

7 years...

7 years later. Cheryl convinces Harry to take a vacation (his wife is dead by now, making Harry overprotective).

probably because of the spell, they take their holiday to 'Silent Hill'.

Cheryl being called by the other half of her soul goes to Alessa.

Now Alessa realises that her mother won't stop trying to bring 'god' into the world unless she is dead. So her intention --

The two halves unite and gives birth to god (the god looks different depending on your actions in the game).

Harry defeats the god. Then Alessa (her full self, now having Cheryl's happy experiences with Harry, other than her experience of being bullied in school and tortured by her mum).

gives birth to 'herself' a new "Alessa/Cheryl" with a two halves (souls) combined.

--and raises her. 5 years has passed, 'Cheryl' doesn't remember her previous lives; one of the cult members found them and Harry killed him so he dyed 'Cheryl's' hair blonde and went into hiding. He re-named her "Heather". Another 12 years pass and the events of Silent Hill 3 occur.

The scene in this video 'Heather' is fighting the 'memory' of Alessa who was constantly tortured and wanted to commit suicide to stop the suffering.

I hope that made at least a fraction of sense.

Oh and the ritual to bring god into earth was never completed but still on-going.

To bring the cult's god, the host needed to suffer, but Harry's love and care made the god within "Heather" dormant in her body for 17 years.

Throughout the game, the more Heather has suffered, you'll notice the more contraptions she gets- which indicate "baby god" is growing inside of her.

Lisa's character and Alessa's "vision" of Lisa is another thing I find interesting, it's almost like the Mary/ Maria Phenomenon.
