I am in Brisbane..I have 2 parent birds and 2 fledglings who are getting braver by the day and quite often will sing for their supper...I know they are wicked but they are so cute.
haha nice butcher bird the butcher birds on my street swoop me haha, i swear their fucking smart though cause one time i was walking up my street and i felt somthing hit my hat i took my hat off and it shat on me then it swooped me once my hat was off. Another time my dad saw i guy get swooped and it knocked his glasses off his face and the dude couldnt see without them so he was trying to find his glasses while getting swooped LOL
They get their name from their habit of impaling captured prey on a thorn, tree fork, or crevice. This "larder" is used to support the victim while it is being eaten, to store prey for later consumption, or to attract mates. - Wikipedia
very cool! Just saw one yesterday for the first time. It didn't sing, but still it looked amazing!

I will hazard a guess, it's because they butcher lots of smaller birds.
