Actually, weird opening IS explained later in movie. The day Gerry's twin sister was to marry fiancé Tom, Gerry locks her sister in closet, steals her wedding dress...and her sister's groom! Apparently Tom doesn't mind switch. And towards end of movie, it's revealed he's a twin himself. (Would've been really funny if his twin had switched at same time! But wouldn't have had story.) At end of movie, being twins comes in handy to solve another dilemma...
As well there shouldn't be. I believe this is writer-director Preston Sturges' nose-thumbing at movies that contain nothing *but* exposition. I'm delighted to see that so many YouTube viewers count this as one of their favorite movies, as I do also. And ignore that earlier suggestion of deleting the credits -- if you did that for this movie, you'd remove some of its biggest laughs!
@hjb103055 There in fact is no explanation of the opening sequence in the movie itself.
The Wikipedia entry (as it appeared the day I read it) did give an explanation, but it was not based on any factual information provided by someone who could have known for certain (like Preston Sturges himself). So what's going on is conjectural.
You've disguised this pretty well. I hope it sticks around for longer than the previous versions did! Many thanks, this movie is one of my all-time favorites :-)

I always thought the opening alluded to a previous story - a film or book - that the audience would have recognised...

As I remember, there never is any explanation of the events of the opening montage.

@hebneh The opening sequence must have something to do with the identical twins. Great movie!
