Sorry to be a dick, but, the collapse of Rome is what marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, and Greek Pankration is considered the beginning of MMA, long before Rome.

Now, about these filmed MMA fights in the US in the 1880's. What are you talking about? Where can I find them? What were the rules? Styles used? Very interested, please respond.

@Ljenkins9000 Keep in mind I'm using the term mma very losely. I'm refering to any form of mixed style contest where diferent styles competed against each other. Catch wresting, bare knucle bouts ect. as far as the 1880's ,in 1887 when John L. Sullivan, then heavyweight world boxing champion, lost to Greco-Roman wrestling champion William Muldoon in a no holds/strikes bared match. In the late 1890s heavyweight boxing champion Bob Fitzsimmons faced Greco-Roman champion Ernest Roeber.

If we can count the Ali/Inoki fight where Inoki wasn't allowed to do takedowns, submissions or kicks while standing up as an early MMA fight, then yes, allowing both boxing and wrestling in the 1800's would definitely count as MMA.

Strange though, seems really difficult to find any 'solid' info about either of those fights.

@Ljenkins9000 I have no idea how much these matches were spectacle and how much they were sport. My guess would be some combination of the above. I once saw some choppy black and white movie footage of one of them on an mma forum but the quality was very low and I can't find it for the life of me. Basically all that I am saying is that the bare bones concept of mma has existed since the begining of civilization not the refined sport that we have been privilaged to watch grow.

@rhrhllc I can't argue with the fact that MMA has technically been around for at least 2700 years, but would you agree that fighting and the general understanding of fighting has evolved much more in the last 18 years than it has in the 2000 before that?

Also, thanks for the info. Both history and martial arts have been life long passions of mine, so the history of martial arts/fighting is obviously an extremely interesting topic to me.
