Its a pity that the last verse was not kept in the song, it is so crucial to the song. It tells of the penalty that man faced once the apple was eaten. This is not doom and gloom because there is still time for man to come back to God and his sins to be forgiven. One question though: it seemed like this recording was cut a bit short. After the last chorus, Don says "and the Tree of Life" (I think)

That was not a sexist statement I don't believe. McLean is taking the Genesis narratives- and some of it's language and putting it to music. He's putting "myth" to music if you will. "Companion" seem to me to be more of statement of equality of sorts.

But over all, when you take into consideration the reason it was written, what McLean was trying to communicate, and also the audience to who he was singing- I don't see this to be McLean attempting to give his opinion of social liberation.
