  • anybody has the chords for this beautiful song?

  • Its a pity that the last verse was not kept in the song, it is so crucial to the song. It tells of the penalty that man faced once the apple was eaten. This is not doom and gloom because there is still time for man to come back to God and his sins to be forgiven. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

  • I love the song and i love the singer and writer.

    And.....

if Eve and Adam where chinese people they would have eaten the snake not the apple.

    - Told be a swami -

  • This is such abeautiful song and very sad too. I think it was a B-side. My brother had Crying 7" so it might have been that record.

  • @Heavensent1972

Just google his name. He has an own internet-Site. You can order a email-letter where he tells where he is singing and plaing in the present.

    He is a genious.

    your ed

  • Beautiful , he is so humble like Jesus or king David .....anyone knows where is he today?

  • He's not a singer, he's a poet who performs his poetry to music. Awesome!

  • Wow - never heard this before, maybe I wasn't looking for it till today.

    Beautiful - Praise God!

  • הלוואי שיופיע שוב בארץ!

  • Don is a great talent.

  • Ihana, tulee mieleen oma nuoruus 26 vuotta sitten, kun tapasin rakkaan mieheni...

  • i am in deep longing for the tab for this, please help by liking this comment, and just to be fair to musicmankk69 i'll reiterate that Don is among the best of the lyricists, hows that?

  • thank you for posting this, Don Mclean is the best. Love this song

  • Yea. Its not 'Thank God I'm a country boy'. But its pretty good. The amazing thing is these songs of his went unnoticed.

  • who disliked this????????

  • who disliked this????????

  • This performence took place in Israel. People here liked him alot, his songs created a great emphasis with the wars in our country.

    its in Ciseria city.

  • This is one Don wont play anymore...this is it..too bad the last verse was not included in the broadcast.

  • I know, This is the last verse (from memory folks)..... Tree of knowledge, tree of death. Upon the ground they trod. The serpent said your eyes will see and you will be a god. Defy the word and eat the fruit And you will never die. And you will charge your destiny And rule the earth and sky. And man was banished east of Eden. See what we have lost. For though the father sets the price The children pay the cost.
  • wonderful don.

  • Click my Username - My IQ is 112

  • I'm an athiest but I just love this song. Origanally on the 'b side of Crying from 1978. Any chance somebody could post the 1978 studio version with the last verse included ta.Pax from Ian Smith.Xxx.

  • This is a beautiful song I never heard before until I saw this video. Unfortunately however it is missing the last verse.

  • Actually I was genuinely enjoying that debate

My personal belief is that i should have the freedom to speak on this page, and if you don't like what i'm saying you have the freedom to not read it.

  • WELL PUT Spamuel .. it really IS a beautiful song :) .. thanx :)

  • Can someone supply me with the chords to this song? I like it, and you don't have to agree with the lyrics to not find it a lovely song.

  • Exactly. We don't know what really happened before our time, no matter how much hubris we have.

All we can do is look for beauty in our short time.

  • Look will everyone please stop using these videos to debate over political or religious issues, and calling names and arguing? Can't we just listen to the song and all agree that it is beautiful? He is a magnificent story teller. I hope to be like him someday.

  • Finally someone who gets the meaning of these videos! If you all want to debate about religion and politics, go in chatrooms or God knows where! Your noisy bickering prevents REAL music lovers to listen to the song!

  • it doesnt prevent anyone from LISTINING to it, but i guess you cant comment as... well.

  • in the begonning time and outer space were created....no one knows what these 7 days means...7 seconds nor billions of years....a day is as 1,000 years....

  • I found the lyrics a while ago, but thanks for posting it! I wish someone would post the full song of this version; I wasn't much of a fan of the other versions!

  • "tree of knowledge, tree of death..." exactly...Ishmael by Daniel Quinn

  • "Tree of knowledge, tree of death..." exactly that, if you know what this song is really about, or want to, read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn

  • Nobody writes songs like this anymore. Music in the 70's and 80's was more like poetry and literature. Moral, and artistic reflections on the world.

But very few artists write good material like this anymore. We, ladies and gentlemen, now live in a artistic and moral vacuum.

  • @proinsiaspad What you are writing is quite pessimistic. The universe ist endless - men and women with genious power of creation appear again and again. Just mention Michael Jackson wiht his spiritual songs. The next perfect songwriter is probably born in the moment you read this. Keep your head up - your Edward

  • If you enjoyed this song, check out Don Francisco, a Christian story teller. He is an AMAZING talent.

  • This is so incredibly beautiful. Not very religious myself, but I think I might be able to understand where McLean is coming from.

One question though: it seemed like this recording was cut a bit short. After the last chorus, Don says "and the Tree of Life" (I think)

Is there any chance to get the entire concert somewhere?

  • this was taken place in Cizeria , Israel.

  • yes that's it, women are just companions

    grrr

    he's such a beautiful singer/writer

why does he have to be spoiled by sexism?

  • That was not a sexist statement I don't believe. McLean is taking the Genesis narratives- and some of it's language and putting it to music. He's putting "myth" to music if you will. "Companion" seem to me to be more of statement of equality of sorts.

But over all, when you take into consideration the reason it was written, what McLean was trying to communicate, and also the audience to who he was singing- I don't see this to be McLean attempting to give his opinion of social liberation.

  • Pathetic. Seriously, what did he sing to imply that being a companion makes one unequal? You simply imposed a piece of attention-seeking nonsense over a beautiful song. Why?

  • I'm atheist but this is still a beautiful song to me

  • wonderful god?jesus christ????do u think god is jesus? JEHOVAH is GOD jesus is SON of GOD.

  • this is true!

  • Testify! 1+1+1=3 not 1

  • Ah, but 1/3+1/3+1/3=1!

Imagine an apple pie. Cut it into thirds. Each piece is its own piece separate from the others. But together they make one pie.

Testify! Aetheists and Religious Nutcases are idiotic morons who can only see through their own eyes! The answer lies in between the two extremes.

  • martinmcgurty: God is The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. He is three yet, He is one. Three natures in one person. Jesus is God; as Jesus is fully man, fully God. We cannot seperate the two. God is The Father (Jehova), and He is the Holy Spirit. When God gave of Himself to man (His creation), He gave us three natures (as He is one). God, Jesus, and the The Holy Spirit has always existed; because God has always existed. He is outside of creation; as creation was created by Him.

  • Right on....it is nice to hear someone speak the truth....may God Bless You

  • The concept of the trinity didn't come about until the 300's AD. You are just regurgitating the same tired old dogma that you've been spoon fed by your divinity-school trained preacher.

  • eirinikos: You are confusing the concept of the Creed with early Church knowledge (first several generations of Christianity). It wasn't invented in 300 ad. It was proclaimed in the Nicene Creed to fight heresy. Plus, I am not a product of Divinity school.

  • The concept of the trinity, was discovered by man, not created by man.

  • He's right you know.

  • I hope he knows this wonderful God, Jesus Christ!

  • Excellent post - 10!!!

    God Bless. <33333

    ;-)

  • Nice song .. more of the same please

  • thanks so much for sharing this comparatively little-known song. He wrote so many great ones.

  • Don is GOD

  • Sorry Jack...Don is

    farrrrr from God, our

    creator.

  • AMAZING recording of one of my favourite DM songs. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • Well...if there is a god he certainly didn't waste his time making Mclean!

  • There is a God and He's not a singer, but He's given many people the talent to touch the hearts of others with song, art and writing. Don McLean certainly got his share.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if a god sang. I mean, what else would they do in their spare time?

  • You're right. God does sing! Just listen to the birds, the ocean tide, a thunderstom. Every beautiful sound in the world is the sound of God's song. Even the rocks cry out!

  • If only all music had this much passion behind it. DM is an inspiration.

  • Great! Thanks for sharing.

  • A pre-eminent performer and composer, and what messages he is in tune with! He has the pulse of life. Not a second is wasted. Thanks for this glorious posting.

  • Nice'

  • Toda to Mitzi,

I saw this song half a year ago in "kach haja" at the internet and now found the hebrew version of the lyrics by rachel shapira ("bereshit")

Its great to see the transformation of thoughts from the bible via Don McLean back into modern Hebrew thinking and poetry, really awsome!

  • Perfect!Thank you!What a God given voice.

  • I agree with kitkatkang. More! More! More!

I have seen him 3 times in concert in Oz. He's the best!

  • unfortunately I have only two songs from this specific concert (also "And I love you so"). If I'll find more you'll be the first to know... :-)

  • I know a Hebrew version of this song ("hit'atsamnu me'az" = we've grown strong since then). Who wrote the music?

  • The Hebrew version - "Bereshit" (Genesis) by Galli Attari. The original music by Don Mclean.

  • Thanks.

  • @mitzy1234 The Hebrew words-Ehud Manor translated to Hebrew. Gali Atari is the singer of the Hebre version.

  • @avishagi100

    corection:

Rachel Shapiro translated the song to hebrew.

  • Thank mitzi1234, álom szép dal, csodálatos előadásban! Köszönöm, köszönöm!

  • This is great. Hope you could put more of his solo performance for viewing!!
