I first got into the residents when I was 11 (33 Years ago) I think its safe to say they helped to wreck my head..... I feel a bit better nowadays though !
I like this album because it sounds really shitty, and the music is so good that it makes the shitty sound a benefit!! Seriously, you don't need to have a good sounding record, just a record with good songs!!
I attended a show that was performed by one of the members of the Residents (wont mention his name because they dont reveal their identies) and he had a very old keyboard with an analog rhythm and percussion section however he sounded amazing.
nope - miscellaneous cheap crap. there's that funny synth-like sound in the first and last parts, but the rest is analog drumbox, bass, guitar, and stacked guitars with the 'female' vocal (those tinny things are electric guitars - you can hear one or more plucking muted strings in the fadeout)
I remember someone giving me Primus' Misc. Debris and hearing Sinister Exaggerator and thinking damn! Someone's actually covered a Residents song. I love the Residents...and obviously so did Claypool, lol.
blocparty experimental? seriously? try listening to Gang of Four's "Entertainment" and you'll forget all about blocparty.. 20 years before those kids atleast
was there some part of "and people today think bloc party are experimental" that you mistook as the poster's actual opinion & not an ironic comment on the state of things? moshimoshi's on our side, god-dammit.
residents are so incredible; I love their music always, i'm come from britain (bretagne in french) we like that in our country, so crazy, if you like post me i give an adress
Sinister Exaggerator is my favourite Residents song, amazing composition,.. way ahead of it's time,.. and people today think BlocParty are experimental with sound... they dont come near at all... actually what the hell am I even doing putting their name next to The Residents
I can't imagine why, but on 'Blue Rosebuds' that high-pitched voice in the middle sounds like Sandy Squirrel of 'Spongebob Squarepants'.
Am I being weird in thinking the Spongebob folks could cover The Residents? I keep hearing Squidward singing 'Sinister Exaggerator'.
Maybe I should see a shrink...

What exactly is good in this? The atmosphere? The weirdness? I don't get this.

@msbfd I'm pretty sure that even the swirling synth-like sound at the beginning of "Blue Rosebuds" is just several tracks of heavy delayed guitars.

I think most of whats on the "popular" rock/indie/dj scene was affected by the residents.

I think Les Claypool's style of singing was slightly inspired partly by The Residents.
