  • Holy........ ummmm well

Enough power to shame F1 cars.

And then..... well.... what can I say....

    The best car ever!

  • RIP to the REAL racing. At least until 2014 when these guys are coming back.

  • I SAW them race at Riverside amany times.

They were known as the Penske Porsches.

In qualifying trim with boost turned up , close to 1500 H.P.

These would crap all over a F1 car on certain types of tracks.

Coming out of turn 6 , they would smoke those huge rear tires.

Mark Donohue/George Follmer were the drivers. CAN-AM series.`72-`73 and then they effectively banned them with rules changes.

  • I would shit mt pants driving it :P

  • The actual stats for this car: 1580 bhp in qualifying, 1100 bhp in race trim, 0-62 in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 in 3.9 seconds, 0-125 in 5.2 seconds, 0-200 in 10.9 seconds. Top speed is 257 mph.

  • 1580 bhp, 0-60 in 2.3 seconds and Veyron top speed, this destroys everything PLUS it actually looks awesome.

  • This car is a monstrosity!! Actually near the end of Can-Am, other cars like the Shadows had giant 8L turbo V-8s with comparable HP, but none had the overall package including the tank-like reliability of the 917, which was effectively banned for being too good. The Can-Am days were like the Wild West, which continued throuh the Turbo '80s in F1 and Le Mans. I love those days!!!

  • I have also heard the car had 1100hp...at low boost, which was meant for running for the 12 to 24 hour races it would be in. The 1500hp was from turning up the boost for qualifying, or so I have read.

  • 1102 hp

  • @georgegcamargo 1102,00000423422424002000121312303045HP is that precise enough for You? :D

  • Dude Thats Fucing Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!

  • why didn't it start right away?

  • Sounded like they were trying to build some oil pressure first time around. These older cars are finicky, so they sometimes take a minute to start, especially these with the old school mechanical fuel injection.

  • The first turn overs are done without ignition to build up oil pressure first. Then the same with ignition to play it save. This is typical for older cars with bigger engines.

  • agree and for new racecars too.

  • @odinandme possibly have to prime the engine first

  • It needed the ambalamps.

  • auto union 200 mph autobahnen run

    1930s. amazing machines

  • Drag Race? A car that was SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to do one thing. Go as fast as possible for 24 hours. Drag that. They were doing over 200mph down the Mulsanne PRE-WW2

  • These weren't built until the 1970's, well after the war.

  • @zwolfen

The first car to go over 200 mph at Le Mans was the GT-40 MK II in the 60's way after WW2.

  • "Inboard" hydro-racing....Do some google, spunky. Find out the origin of the 3-point hydroplane. The 917 came JUST after Ford's GT40 campaign. Porsche pulled ALL their stops on the 917. 240 mph on a two-lane road?

  • this racecar have 1100 HP, not 1200.

  • Im Quali-Trim hat das Ding bis zu 1500 geliefert, im race-trim so 1000-1200 . . .

  • Drag rcings like a quick ejaculation.Corners make it more interesting and longer lasting...

  • Motorracing is like sex. If it is over in a few seconds it isn't good.

  • @GavinS1965

Pedazo burrada que acabas de soltar.....Te quedarias agusto.....IGNORANTE!!!!!

  • @montes028 Er,whatever you say,dude!

  • @GavinS1965 Have you ever drag raced something other then your moms car ? It all depends on the class and ET your racing. There are classes that would make you scream like a little girl. All auto racing is great ...

  • @rotax7804 Yeah,bikes.

  • @rotax7804 It is pretty good, the comment was good old British humour don't ya know.

  • @GavinS1965 Like corners better.

  • I find little evidence (to "settle... once and for all") in your comment.

In road racing, the converse is also true. Drivers have many laps in which a single mistake can cost him/her the race (or a life). Danger is not a novelty to drag racing.

I will concede that drag racing (especially on bikes) values precision and ultimate focus, while road racing values consistency.

Each discipline has its demands and this pathetic pissing match between fans only serves to make each side look more ignorant.

  • Mr.Vegas, well spoken!

I have raced both drag racing and road racing.

    The two do not compare.

    Each has its own challenges.

  • Beastly doesn't begin to describe the 917/30. Wonder if there was much adjustment drivers had to go through from driving the 908 or 917 to then hopping into this thing. Incredible car and the engine guys who developed the turbo for these cars when they so easily swept the McClaren's aside should have been given a knighthood or something lol.

  • From that angle and sound.. I would swear that was a alcohol funny car..

  • 1580hp in a 917/30, makes modern F1 cars seem a bit slow, to be honest. its 0-200 time is rumored to be about 10.5 sec, compared to F1 0-186 like 10 sec. STILL 917/30 IS THE MOST CRAZIEST ROAD BEAST EVER!

  • one thing i gotta say about the whole drag vs road race thing. most road racing drivers can go on a drag strip and put down a good time but i wouldn't say so for the other way around. everyone who loves all forms of motorsports knows that no matter how hard and fast a dragster goes it will never be harder then piloting a screaming 700hp piece of metal and plastic around a corner.

  • 917/30 had 1580 hp;) with high boost for qualifying

  • holy fucking shit. that makes my point even better.

  • wait....what do you mean...high boost......the 917 was a naturally aspirated flat 12 cyl. no turbo.

  • 917 and 917K were N/A flat 12's but the 917/30 was a twin turbo 5.3 liter flat 12;)

  • wrong 1100 hp /7800rpm

  • that for race trim stupid fuck we have gone over this 1500 hp for qualifying on high boost i think 38/39 psi and race trim was 1100 hp

  • Best racecar ever all categories.

The most powerful circuit racecar (who the hell counts dragsters and tractor pulling as motorsport?).

The oil crisis of 1973 meant Can-Am was dead, although it did endure until 1974.

  • Bullcrap. Pushing the pedal to the metal and steering straight for a few seconds requires no skill. At least nowhere near the skills required for circuit racing.

Dragster drivers don't need to be fit or have great stamina. Dragster drivers don't need to preserve the brakes, preserve the tires, and race with 20 others on twisty circuits for almost 2 hours straight.

Formula 1 is where the most skillful drivers are found. 5G's in the corner means your neckmuscles better be trained.

  • So keeping concentrated for a few seconds is harder than keeping fully concentrated for 2 hours?

Being fit for a few seconds race is better than being fir for a two hour race?

Clipping aphexes of corners at the optimum speed, applying the correct amount of throttle with a extremely limited powerband, with a twitchy chassis, extremely delicate in balance is easy??

Dragster drivers are old and fatsoes.

Whoever believes dragracing requires more skill than Formula 1, Rallying or LeMans?

  • Any idiot can drive fast in a straight line, and an idiot in a fast car can easily win against the best driver ever in a slower car.

Not in circuit racing though, where skillful drivers can keep up and sometimes outrace amateurs having 3 times more powerful cars.

Knowing the limits of the car and tires, driving with great strategy and putting in fast laps without spinning out due to a short moment of non-concentration for 2hours straight.

Try braking without servoassisted brakes for 2 h

  • I'm not saying circuit racing is easy. All racing is very difficult and requires much practice and concentration. But racing with a car that goes 0-320 mph in less than 5 seconds is very hard. Your reaction time must be perfect otherwise you lose. Keeping the car straight is an extremely difficult task in it's self. Recovery from a slight turn takes years of practice to perfect. It looks easy, but it's much harder than you think.

  • I posted in car footage of the 917/30... check it out. Search either "917 30" in the search function or through my profile.

  • That 917 have 1100 Hp And its one of the best Race- Porsches i think ;D

  • nice the 917/30 did have in the region of 1500hp iv actully read that on numerous books n threads n mags n sites. go on wikedpedia or google it im sure theres endless info of the car in ther.

  • whats the mpg on one of those bad boys?

  • .25

  • for real?

  • Yeah...under full load accelerating, what do you think it would get for MPG?

  • its about 2mpg, the can am people made a limit of 3mpg so this car had to be de-tuned

  • The 917/30 has 1100 HP not 1200...

  • Check the literature. The car had up to 1500 hp for the record drive of Marc Donohue. So 1100 is a bit pessimistic.

  • yeah but that was usually only in qualifing trim. It usually only raced with a reliable 1100 bhp

  • @Liftlux 1500hp+ in qualifying spec!

  • @Liftlux That was the turbo version which i dont think this is (maybe im wrong). And that was 30 years ago, so after 30 years of ponies getting old and dying i would say 1100 is pretty optimistic.

  • @JSnyder49428 Just had a long discussion about the HP of these cars with a friend, which invloved some reading and source verification, seems there were various versions of this car ranging anywhere from 600 to 1500 HP! But I do stand by my statement that they would have lost some power over the years.

  • @Liftlux but why did they have to dail back from1580hp from testing down to 1100hp in racing? restrictions, or for safety?

  • @stupidrelaoded probably for engine durability reasons. In qualifying your only running a couple laps, so the engine doesn't have to last too long, so 1580 is enough to set a good qualifying time. One the race starts though, 1100 should keep the engine from failing for the rest of the race.

  • @camwizardoz well, that does make sense, but I still would've loved to see it full-on race with all that power tho

  • @stupidrelaoded who wouldn't? but sadly if that were to happen it would have a spectacular engine failure and the team would lose the race. These cars are incredibly versatile, being able to pump 1580 hp for a qualifying lap is amazing in itself, but for an engine to race for 12 to up to 24 hours with 1100hp? well i guess for me that's more than enough to titillate my senses haha.

  • @camwizardoz well, when you say it like that........lol

  • @stupidrelaoded haha im just grateful cars like this exist, they make dreaming worthwhile when girls like Jessica Alba just dont cut it haha

  • @camwizardoz hahahahah, that's damn good point,haha

  • @stupidrelaoded indeed ;D

  • @camwizardoz The naturally aspirated 917s were the ones that did endurance racing. These turbocharged 917 spyders competed in can-am, where the races were much shorter, in the range of 1-2 hours long.

  • @OhHeyThereGuy well its seems i learn something new everyday, thank you for the information :)

  • @Liftlux

Check your litterature again. QUALIFYING engines had +1200 hp (dyno bottomed out at 1200 hp so no ones knows how much the engines delivered actually. Anything more than 1.300 hp is most likely an exageration same as with BMW F1 Turbo engines.

  • The 917/30 had up to 1500hp...

  • it could be changed from 1580 in qualifying spec to 1100 race spec

  • @Porloepp Really that's noting a boost controller can't fix.

  • that idle note is pure sex...thank you

  • It started fine. He rolled the engine to fill the cylinders with mixture. Then he armed the ignition by switching it on. Then he created a spark from some giant spark gap generator(probably an F-16 afterburner igniter or something comparable). Start thinking propane barbecue pit igniter. So, that is what I think you heard.

  • Where is this? Looks like the new pits at Killarney.

  • I was there too!

  • finally a video of the /30 beast that makes the normal 917 look girly.

  • I always love hardstarting cars .

  • great event i was there and you see willy khausen walking by. great .
