  • I think you should shave and cut your hair.

  • what idf your story has t have no ending?

  • Excellent explanation. I appreciate you taking out the time to post all those sticky's for our benefit. Gone!

  • useful video

  • This is the book "The Hero With A Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell in a nutshell. It's the archetypal plot found most often throughout mythology and that which is still in full force today. Word of advice though, because it's so common it's not that original, as a writer you must tread new ground. Beginners tend to think that this is a formula for success, don't be that naive.

  • Actually, this is a very smart way to look at how a story works.

  • brilliant - i'm going to make a feature next year, for very little, but hopefully it ll be very good - this is mucho inspirational

  • You look like Jesus.

  • @geoffrz450 lol i thought the same thing :)

  • I loved this guy's song "Inside You," in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

  • Boy am I sick of seeing films that follow this paradigm. Of all the books on story structure, I find Chris Vogler's the least useful (which is what this structure basically is, right? Vogler's reformulation of Campbell's quest paradigm).

  • people need to realize that this is a model of how we experience life as human beings. it's not about writing the way Hollywood wants you to write, it's about writing in a way that creates emotional and intellectual experiences.

we cannot just write raw emotions on the page; they must be structured in a way that we can understand it.

why is it that we can go through life following structure for living and than when it comes to creating "artwork" we decide that there are no structures?

  • A story is just that . . . a story . . . one master event. Just tell your story your way for the screen. This sounds like a template. No good . . .

  • what dribble ,,

start with purpose. decide on a significant point(s) to imbed in the story. all good stories teach something or have a solid message.

  • Works for me. The "post it s" on the wall are kinda cool.

  • Now take all that information he just told you and forget it.

  • Stick to the basic monomyth, people. But you do not have to follow all these steps one by one.

No wonder movies are unoriginal garbage these days.

  • It's more guttural, more instinctive then structure. This is what messes up a lot of young writers.

The main goal should be, for a young writer: Fuck up. It's that simple. Jumble it all up. Mess up, hate it all, and look at something as making no sense whatsoever.

That way, it's more of a growing process.

Structure only comes after self-loathing, self-judgment, self-pity, and quite honestly: self-discovery.

No story had a structure. It's not this simple.

    Except in Hollywood.

  • Good brief on Joseph Campbell and Chris Vogler's work. Cheers!

  • Anyone know where I can find more details on the 'feature film in a nutshell' formulae?

  • This book: "The Writer's Journey; Mythic Structure for Writers" by Christopher Vogler. This is the book we used in my script class and it's used everywhere. This video is talking about exactly everything from this book so get it.

I myself, don't believe in this mythic structure. Seems unrealistic and ancient to me. Just sounds TOO formulaic. But reading a book with an open mind and a grain of salt can't hurt.

  • every idea mentioned here was taken from joseph campbell

  • Very excited to see you succeed with this project Rob. You've really got a great attitude and approach to the documentation of the process. Looking forward to seeing the next installment. When you're done and back in blighty, drop me a line. I'd love to run a screening and maybe some PR. As for the story structure ... well Joseph Cambell would be proud.

  • joeseph might be unhappy no one gives him credit when using his ideas

  • I'm going to go right ahead and take it he's dead, in which case I don't think he'll mind.

  • great idea, ignore the master, don't show respect, the universe will reward you in kind

  • Woah, sorry I didnt realize how seriously you were taking this. Yeah of course you are right he should be credited for his theories. The fact that his ideas live on is a credit in itself I suppose.

  • will it be on youtube, or as a stand alone kind of movie?

  • wow.

  • This guy is soo damn cool, one of the best projects I've seen. I love this idea, and he got the guts!

  • Come off it, this is almost certainly contrived by a studio in order to promote the film, so they can make a load of money. Like LonelyGirl15.

  • Even if it is like you say, I would say he still have been putting effort just making the videos, he is great. I don't believe what you say anyway.

  • Whatever. He probably is doing the movie on his own, but I'll bet you he has a studio behind him - He just wouldn't get insurance otherwise.

  • Maybe, he is still cool!

  • That's true. I've subscribed anyway, even if it is fake, it's still good to watch. And hell, it might not be, but I still doubt that.

  • lo, I will add you

  • sei bravo

  • You've just saved me hundreds of pounds from going to the cinema to see films! now i can just hear the title and imagine it!

  • LOL

  • How about the script structure for YOUR film? This is common knowledge for anyone who knows script-writing.

  • I can't wait to see this movie. As for everybody who is posting bad comments, well, you just dont believe and dont know the awesome stuff from the stupid stuff.

  • Thank you for posting this! I really needed this to help me write the script for my movie. I have an awesome idea but I needed this formula to make it a reality. I very much look forward to seeing your feature film and I will let you know when mine is completed.

  • All that to earn his stripes? Why not just eat Frosted Flakes?

  • ROFL

  • He's not claiming to have made it up himself!

  • cool stuff

  • Die metaphorically... Sounds very nightmarish and Dante-esque.

    So you've met my family...

Very interesting stuff I think I'll subscribe. Say thanks to rhondaanthonytanner, she clued me in to your channel.

  • You got it !

  • wow
