You'd be out of luck! Being weather-wise is part of surviving in tornado alley. The knowledge that storms may be present is usually well received hours before storm systems move through a given area. We just don't park the cars over the shelter during those times.
No secondary exit. Inside of rolling door, however, has fittings on it to be used with a supplied ratchet "come along" that can be used to crank the door open even if debris is lying on it.
These are extremely popular in the Southern Great Plains. And, remember, you're only in one of these things about 30 minutes at longest! The "pole" or banister is just an add-on, one does not need it for ingress or egress. RE: Water, this is on high ground and over nearly a year with a couple of blowing downpours...no water collected. Wouldn't that better away from the house so you won't get caved in when the house gets destroyed and the debris falls on top of the sliding lid?
