  • Guess he didn't feel like singing here ,but it's great anyway . I love the version on twin peaks when he really belts out the vocal The man can sing ,and make the guitar sing and scream as well Hope he gets a prosthetic limb and comes back at it !

  • Leslie West is by far one of the best guitarist in the world......FCKIN' A'

  • I am just glad Leslie West still kicks out the jams, love his pure rock playing

  • studio version is the best, the intro just has a great feel and the guitar sustains with that power chord in an awesome fashion, ascending into an upper harmonic.

  • @brokeandfixed

Yes it is, it based on the G blues scale. I bet that that camera man is not a guitarist or musician himself...

  • L.W.

    The UTMOST TONE.....

L.W. is from a different planet!

    DB

  • Oh god I love Leslie

  • Okay....first of all WOW....second of all.........WOWWWW and third of all...yes, I agree...this was one hot performance. It's amazing that he lists his influences consisting of ....Cream, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, BB King, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones......When it seems like it should be other way around except for BB, and Elvis. He's not only one of the biggest influences of guitar...but also on the direction of the music scene itself.

  • Leslie my inspiration , he's what rock n roll is all about.

  • L'chei-im!

  • wow! great soloing mann!!!! i got your signature in the year 2000 at guitar camp in CT. ive grown since then. Madd Sick!

  • My goodness! He was actually singing softly here. I kind of like it.

  • Saw Leslie at Cozy Joe's i n Sayreville back in the 80's . He was fabulous back

then and He is one of my all time favorites. How is he doing. I heard him on

Howard a few weeks ago. What a Mensch; He felt more for his wife than

himself. Hope you can rebound Leslie. I am sure you have many people

hoping you get well and going again.

  • @chetbrunt Leslie is surrounded by a small family with HUGE hearts. He also has millions of fans around the world pulling for him, and he gets to read hundreds of comments daily through Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. No question Leslie knows he is much loved, and hes doing remarkably well considering the challenge he now faces.

  • @chetbrunt I played this song in a group a million years ago and loved it (bass for me). My Leslie West story: I was in Men's Warehouse buying slave clothes and Miss. Queen came on the radio. The utterly square, totally perfect tailor type got a look like he was hearing the Voice and said to me, "That intro is the best two bars of music ever performed on a Les Paul Junior!" i loved him at that moment. Then, "Would like an extra pair of trouser with that?"

  • appropo

  • leslie west.........................what a man!

  • Interestingly enough, despite all the Cream connections, Leslie has never gotten the chance to jam with Eric Clapton.

Come on EC, just one time, DESPITE the old days. FOR THE FANS!!!!!!

  • @depper does eric have a problem with leslie?

  • I love ya Leslie! We all do! You will be in my prayers... Leslie is the king of tone! His phrasing is beautiful to hear! I have been a fan since I can remember...We won't forget about you Leslie! Get well soon!

  • @longtimegone55 I couldn't help noticing on the Cream reunion DVD that Jack Bruce had to avail himself of a chair occasionally, especially on "Crossroads", and it didn't affect his playing any, either. I'm confident the same will hold true with Leslie. Maybe West, Bruce, and Laing should reunite and they should all play seated, even if Bruce has recovered enough from his health crisis to stay on his feet.

  • @Arbeedubya Great idea! I believe many music legends will be knocking at Leslie's door to play with him when he gets well enough to return to the stage. In the last few years we've seen so many greats such as Satriani, Allman Bros, Van Halen, & Johnny Winter play with Les. Can you imagine if more of the remaining rock and blues greats wish to share the stage with Leslie?

  • @depper I'd love to see him and Clapton perform together, if only because on one hand, Clapton's work on "Crossroads" (the 1969 Winterland gig) still ranks as my all-time favorite live guitar performance, while Leslie is my favorite all-around guitarist. I understand they did some jamming shortly after Mountain was formed, since Felix was producing them both, but I'm not aware of any recorded evidence. I'm sure you would know if anyone would.

  • @longtimegone55 I'm with you there. I'm a longtime, hardcore fan of Leslie's, and I guess if something had to go, better a leg than an arm or hand. After taking some time to adjust (something that probably won't be as easy for a man of 65 as it would be for someone younger, I suppose), I hope to see him back with a vengeance. If he ever comes around to my neck of the woods again, I'll go see him even if he has to sit down to play..

  • get well soon Leslie

  • Many prayers going out to the King of Tone. Last weekend, Leslie had his leg amputated in order to save his life. The operation was a success. Now the toughest part begins, the recovery. We are all behind you Leslie! You have a wonderful family and friends around you. We will lift you up like you've lifted US up. Long live Leslie West!!!!!

  • Get well soon Leslie!

  • I saw Mountain @ the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester,Ny in the '70's. Has always been one of my favorite concerts as a youngin'. Had front row seats. Opening act was a group called "Faces" with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart. Quite a night, I think?

  • What is that he plays @ 1:12 ?

  • Outstanding...say no more...

  • I love Leslie, but this is NOT killer tone..it is reverb-ed out wank fest tone ala 80's early 90's shredder digital...blah blah. There are plenty of GREAT examples of Leslie ripping a fat ass tone...this is not one of them.

  • man that drummer blows.

    he just ain't feeling it.

  • I can hear Alvin Lee doing his scat thing in the background!

  • yes, lovely guitar tone, not too shrill, nice and fat in the midrange, just ... sweet

  • awesome sound.

  • Fuck! Leslie West sure had some fanastic riffs! Brilliant !

  • I worked for Steinburger for many years. good to see one getting rocked.

  • Whats the name of that song? 1:11 - 1:32

  • gotta love this guy!!!!

  • the king of tone indeed at least for that sort of t'ing... it really worked, basically a les paul sound with power and grace .... love it

  • Leslie makes the central sound from the

middle pickup turn me to the center of the sound and soul, long live this type of sound :)

  • One of my favorite guitarists playing one of by fav songs by him. I found out about Leslie when I was in the Navy stationed in RI. He got very little respect in the mid-west where Nugent ruled during the mid-late 60's.

  • My personal favorite guitar player is Michael Schenker who sights Leslie as one of his biggest influences and what is Michael known for? Tone! Now they're both endorsed by Dean and Leslie has a killer Dean model with absolutely SICK TONE! One pickup, one volume, one tone. Plug it in and crank it up! Check out Schenker Pattison Summit where he has Leslie play and sing this as well as Theme For An Imaginary Western. AWESOME!

  • @chitownbluesy / No coincidence that Michael like Leslie as they both have the worlds best vibrato!

  • i am a huge Joe Bonamassa fan and it is clear from where his killer style was born. He is the product of natural talent, very hard work, cool ass vocals, a great family background and all the greats he has studied and worked with. Joe is flat out Great, but how he really became a GIANT STAGE MONSTER is his ability to channel Leslie West.

  • a great storyteller fun interview cool guy

  • 1:10 just love how he incorporates Santo & Johnny "Sleepwalk" here, simply amazing. I noticed he mixes it up a little differently each live show he does. His style and sound is always fresh and never dated. This listener doesn't think so anyway. Thanks for sharing

  • @DesolationBlvd I wonder how many others actually caught that too! Just like they throw Cream's "Politician" in the middle of Mississippi Queen. :-)

  • leslie west....ive never heard such monster guitar tone. I strive to get the same sound, but its really diffcult. I'll probably be working on it for a very, very long time.

  • this was good shit back in the 70,s and it,s still good now.

  • Aw, man! Tasty and FEROCIOUS!!!

Just the way we like it!!!

  • He should go back to a Les Paul Jr. That was his best sound.

  • @plangentmusic YUP.Sun amp stack too.this sounds thin by comparison to me.

  • King Of Tone suits him just fine...

  • There is no POSSIBLE name for Leslie West better suited then "The King of Tone."

Straight & to the point, just like the man and his music.

  • The drummer sucks. What a dick. He can't play this for shit. Corky Laing is sorely missed here.

  • Leslie West is one of the great unsung heroes of guitar.

  • I think he gets mad at the drummer !!

  • What a f*****n feel

  • Leslie West's playing is killer but his voice is not in top form here. Sounds like he lost his voice a bit.

  • @acdc09 Actually, Leslie had the flu during this tour. That didnt stop him from performing however. So many performers would stay home and collect the paycheck, but not Leslie.

  • @depper correct!

  • Not the best version in my opionion and I've been into Mountan since 69. A double vinyl was released called "Twin Peaks" if you wanna hear a good live version.

  • Les as I called him growing up is always awesome ! The band is very weak though, he needs power players

  • @mortvc Well, gotta understand this was a guitar legends tour. The band was the same for each artist. Personally I liked to see Les play with different musician, each excellent musicians in their own right.

  • @depper you compare these guys to Felix andcorey the original was the best

  • @mortvc No argument there. Felix Pappalardi on bass, Corky Laing manning the sticks, AND Steve Knight on keys were definitely the best of the best. Live, they were unstoppable.

  • @depper That's for damn sure, and then some!

  • Such an awesome live piece here that showcases some of Leslie West's amazing gift! A true guitar legend who's sounds influenced so many other guitarists. Besides making the whole room move, this guy could make everyone's gut chord curled metal wires dance at just the right times!!

  • @thepurpledragonfly well said! ;)

  • His hands are made of gold.

  • zoomin around the Tube, and come across this gem. Once again THANKS DEPPER....repeat THANKS DEPPER !!!!! BTW, I guess Mark Clarke on bass, but the drummer is who ???? Couldn't find it in this thread.

    BTW, THANKS DEPPER

  • @videostan You are welcome Videostan :) Actually thats Derek Holt from Climax Blues Band on Bass and vocals. I looks just like Mark Clarke. I think Derek was at his peak on this tour, really helping Leslie create the magic here and especially his work in Theme for an imaginary western, same show. The drummer is Clive Mayuyu.

  • I think its so cool that Leslie wears a mezuzah.

  • I looked up the word "assume" in the dictionary and Leslie West picture was next to it !

  • His sound is outstanding.

  • Please - who is covering the battery in this session? I like what Leslie is getting out of what I take to be a later model Steinberger... and why not adjust a 2X12 cab head - what is driving what here at that backside? Leslie has less to worry him and all the more reason to do his thing as he hears fit.

  • Wow! Great sound!

  • I love how he has like 10 marshall stacks but runs over and turns up the 2x12 combo

  • @sniffy45

that is great when he does that

  • That's good stuff.

  • I miss the old Leslie West of the 70's !

I saw Mountain LIVE then and used to

play a Les Paul Junior with 1 pickup

and had Marshall stacks. His voice was

gritty and loud form his lungs !

  • oh he's still the same voice, this tour he was sick....

  • Oh, I didn't know that...that was too bad.

I've always loved him with Mountain

and West, Bruce and Laing !

He's the king of overdrive in my book !

  • oh yeah.... check my page. see him jam onstage live with Joe Satriani just last year!

    STUNNING.

  • yeah he sounds a lil horse here. figured he had a head cold.

    btw, which guitar is that?

  • Steinberger GM1T. Stock, right off the shelf.

  • sweet

  • Comment removed

  • Listen to those Marshall amps howl at 4:51,I love the way he look's around afterward ! Priceless !!

  • Lol,. totally fucking cool!

  • Used to have a powerful voice! Did he blow the voice out at some point? Temporary laryngitis maybe?

  • Haha yes, he was under the weather for this tour.

If you are wondering if his voice has failed...

DEFINATELY search for this amazing version of Stormy Monday

    Search:

"Satriani & West LAST SHOW - Stormy Monday"

  • I tried singing like that and it hurts !

I just thought it came natural to him.

But I guess he was putting on an act.

  • what a sound a he was never recognized as he should of been WHY listen to that sound wow wow he amazes me everytime i love his style

  • that sounds better than amps out now''

  • the King of Tone !!

  • that's the rockin' guitar sound

no other guitar player has it

    Leslie West fuckin' rocks !!!

  • I love the little bit of Sleepwalk he does at the beginning.

  • Leslie always has a great tone!

  • The man...his tone wether Kramer;Les Paul;Steinberger still... the hands are the key baby!!

  • Kinda a bummer he is losing his voice but hes still a motherfucker on guitar.

  • haha oh no, SOMEHOW, he got his voice back!! :) Just check my page for some more recent examples of his voice work.

His voice is STILL as powerful as it ever was...

  • Yeah your right he can still sing. good stuff.

  • can't argue with ya, Depper...a fine rendition...i've always loved those little interludes Leslie plays between tunes...its like a stream of conciousness thing, where he just plays whatever pops into his head, and his reportoire(?) is amazing!

  • Do you have Theme For an imaginary western HIFI? I love this hifi video, it really accenturates the guitar and the drums on the background, much better.

If you do have Theme for an imaginary western from this same tour. Please upload it in HIFI

  • Your wish is my command!

Actually... I commanded it before you wished it!!

Search this one out, or check my video page!

"Theme For An Imaginary Western - Leslie West"

  • West is a guitar god..........Could listen him/Mountain for hours......rock and roll at it's brst! Thanks Depper

  • This is no doubt a killer version of this tune. However, Leslie should have had a wireless. Look at all the guitar cable he has to tote around that huge stage. His voice was probably too shot to howl on the song the way he did when he recorded it.

  • long live leslie west !

  • Leslie is one player where sounding like he did in the early part of his career is what we really want to hear. I know sometimes artists can get depressed that they are karaoke versions of themselves. but after he hangs up his guitar, all we'll have is the records. Wish he would play the way he did when he was young and naive. What a sound!

  • Hey Dessertjeff, be SURE to listen to this song by Leslie during the same tour. Be SURE to pad the floor... because you are going to drop on it when you hear it!! :)

"Theme For An Imaginary Western - Leslie West"

  • love the stack of marshal's

  • I didn't realize that Leslie West had such a east coast accent.

  • yeah, most people I speak to think West is from down south, especially because of his worldwide smash hit Mississippi Queen. He was actually born in Forest Hills (Queens, NY). However he was raised on jazz and the blues, and thats why its so evident in his playing.

People were afraid to approach Leslie (maybe because of his size) until Howard Stern gave him a voice and ear in the mid '80s. Thats when fans learned he was sharp and down to earth, and a very funny guy.

  • Thanks for the great song. Do you know what that 60's pop thng he did in the begining of the song? I dont think it was

"Since I dont have you" but it sounded kind of like it.

  • Nope. Type in "Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk 1959" into search bar in youtube for a listen to the entire song played live.

Big ups to Leslie for recreating this instrumental gem & tipping his cap to a few "tone kings" of a long forgotten generation.

  • The first time I heard him play I thought he was the best. I still think he is the best-Leslie West!

  • Haha very good. And accurate quoting of Felix Pappalardi! :)

  • Oops! Got me there ;)

  • My first Mountain LP was actually the german produced serie "Pop History" a double album where the first LP was actually "Climbing" and the second was "Leslie West-Mountain". It must have been realesed between "Climbing" and "Nantucket Sleighride" I think sometimes in 1970. I really loved the cover; you probably have it too- picture of Leslie and Felix and Corky`s drums, (saw just his arms with drumsticks behind the kit!)

  • And in the serie "Pop History" there where other from that era: Ginger Baker`s Airforce, Hardin& York, etc.

  • Thanks Depper that was awesome...love and hugs Misty

  • Thanks, effing killer. Seen Leslie live four times. The guy still rules!
