This album....particularily this song at the end of it, changed my life. I was a boy of 8 or 9, and came home everyday just to listen to it. I went to sleep with it on. For a year. I have many favourite artists, became a Dylan fanatic later on in years, but this will always be my favourite album ever. It introduced me to GOD.
Sublime and Impeccable Perfection.... The Moodies are Gold... Haunting Choral Voices beckoning from Deep Portals... Justine's Voice cries out from the Soul, touching us from another celestial dimension! xoxo
There is such a lack of thought in the music today.
It's just so much noise. They can't even sing! They use AUTOTUNE!!!
It's no wonder we find ourselves looking back to those times when music had meaning. When singers could carry a tune. When lyrics could reach inside our hearts and minds, and lay bare all our fears and hopes.
There is hope as long as we know the difference between this music, and that garbage. Peace.
This is a timeless masterpiece! I was only 11 when I first heard it in 1968 and even then I could tell this was better than anything I'd ever heard before!
Poetry: Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion?
I perform the "Late Lament" portion of this in the same voice and accent as the recorded version, but I also do it in my 'Elmer Fudd' voice for the amusement of my dear, sweet wife. Having seen MB in concert many times, I have offered to perform the "Late Lament" for them, but they have always demurred - they are probably afraid I may lapse into Mr. Fudd's version...
My best mate bought this brilliant album in 1968 and I can still recall listening to it in his ' digs ' on his Decca Deram record player, a real 'Hi-Fi' job !.I recently bought an identical record player, restored it's electronics and I was taken back to my youth of more than 40 years ago. It's still bloody brilliant, in my opinion one of the best 10 and prolific albums of all time.
Great song. Was just reading Chris Aable's Facebook page where he brilliantly noted that the repeated string melody to this song is almost identical to the strings in Glenn Campell's "Lineman For the County" He's absolutely right.
ok, so the second half of the poem at the end of the album is called Late Lament, but what is the first part that is played at the beggining of the album called? And is on youtube anywhere?
By the way, this in my opinion is one of the greatest albums ever made.
Tattooedmama, The 1st part of the poem in the opening song is called Morning Glory. The song is an Overture called The Day Begins. It is on YouTube. Search "The Moody Blues - The Day Begins" on Skullwerk's Channel.
I was born in 1980 and was raised on classic rock and bands like the Moody Blues with my parents old LP's. This remains my favorite Moody Blues song of all time, and i'm glad a new generation has the ability to appreciate it for all of it's greatness.

Trust me on this.
