I was there in 2003 and 2005. The drive down is not for the typical driver. I consider myself adventurous and I was a little nervous about not being able to stop going down. The ride up is a little easier, but try not to stop - if you stop, (yes, even with the 4WD engaged), it can be difficult to start moving again. 25% grade is more than what it seems. It is well worth the trip though - the valley is breathtaking. I plan to return there in October 2010 (assuming the road is still there).
You need to take HI-240. This is off of HI-19. HI-19 can be picked up in Kailua-Kona or Hilo depending on which side of the island you'll be on. From HI-240 you can't miss Waipio Valley RD.
lol. Try hiking down then having it rain on you for 2 days...soggy sleeping bag, shower by shaking the ironwood trees...try to leave but the river is too high....hitch a ride and the truck almost gets swept away in the river....GOOD FUN!
One of the coolest drives I ever drove.
