Hi Klasek, Thanks for your response. Whether you do a lesson or not you have already inpired me to play this song as part of my repetoire (guitar and vocal) so I am practicing it and loving it with the chords used in this Beck/Stewart version. But...if you do a lesson, please let me know and I will be all over it.
@mojoefelix - Thank you! I've had a few other people make the same request of me (that sadly, I've never delivered on). Maybe it's about time I got off my rear-end and start doing some videos again. Wow, I can't believe this was almost 5 years ago.
If you close your eyes and just listen to Keith perform this piece….you can feel the soul in the music. I have not yet heard a better rendition….and I'm including Jeff…..
@Will1992UK - Yes, you've found me out. When I'm not busy with my work as leader of the English Liberal Democrat Party, I've been living a double-life as an obscure American blues guitarist. I'll be back in London just in time for the next press-conference.
PS-> David Cameron plays a mean saxophone. A lot of people don't know that.
The lesson in this video is that he is playing from his soul. That's the beauty and lesson in it. Many people can produce tunes. Not many play from their souls. This young man feels the music in his soul and we can feel it, too!
@zenaw30 I think he looks quite bord to be honest! When you look at the likes of eric clapton, he plays with soul. This guy is just putting notes where they're meant to go! Ok it sounds GREAT but he's just playing his guitar.
Whoa.... I love this song, I love Jeff Becks Music, And man.... I love your playing, The God Of guitar is in Jeff Beck, and Tho Mere Mortals like us, as you say, must stand in awe and recognise.... But man you did a great job. Keep up the awesome work.
As often as I've watched and listened to this video...it is still so cool....er...although perhaps not a proper vernacular term, I actually think of this video as....warm....and comforting. Thank you Keith, again.
Very nice!! Your playing calms my brain. I always tried to play this song with your talent but I could never do it. Rock on dude! I will be watching...
I love the laid-back coolness that you give to this song! Perhaps that is a counter diction of terms because it gives this melody warmth.... As many times as I've listened to this video, I feel like I should be paying you.
TERRIFIC! I didn't think that the music could get any better until I saw this video and your new video, "Coming Back to Life - Pink Floyd Cover". Both are phenominal works! 5*****
I listen to your rendition of this song often and this time I thought I would say that I do. When I am stressed-out, I lie back in my chair, pick this video and enjoy your smooth soulful performance of this great song. Thanks to you Keith, I am good to go at it again....
figonapetter - Thank you! I'm glad you like the backing track too. It's actually me playing bass to a drum machine. I'm certainly willing to share it. But unfortunately, I don't have it anymore. My computer was hit with a virus not long after this video was posted, and this file (among many others) were lost.
Wow Klasek that's just fantastic. I love the Rod-Jeff version of this song and this is it. Everything spot on! Which amp are you using with that nice Strat? I think your tone is as magnificent as your technique...
equalizer5150 - Thanks! Yes, I admit it. I've had several questions about how to go about playing this song. I've been thinking about doing a "how-to" video on this for a long time, so maybe it's about time I finally do that.
The more I listen to this song, the more I love it. You Keith, have given it a soul. I never felt that way when I heard others perform it, not even the great Curtis Mayfield. This performance deserves to be featured on YouTube.
upst8 - Thank you! The fingerpicking style is a bit of mix between Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck. Looks like they were a big influence on you too. Good stuff.
something bout a strat played thru a chorus pedal that sends chills up my spine.....I own a highway one strat and can hardly put it down.......nice playing btw!
ianwalter3 - I'm sorry, I didn't use tabs. But I've been meaning to put together a little instructional video on this tune. Maybe someday I'll get around to doing it. I've had questions about how to play this tune before.
Knopfler has one of the coolest guitar-styles out there! I definitely had him in mind when I did this, as well as Jeff Beck. Both are great non-pick players.
Great performance, bit too slow though.. In this tempo it sounds more like a suicidal hymn than a beautiful love song. Sorry for being sharp on this one.
The way it came out is reflective of how I was feeling at the time (a little depressed). I did this song because I found it's spirituality and optimism very comforting.
Well,I love it! it feels very spiritually comforting so as an artist your feelings came through true. It takes a lot of talent to play like you do, and mix the diff. parts. It takes more technique I think to do it like this,A true artist plays, paints, sings, ect. what's in thier heart and soul at the moment and a gifted artist is able to communicate those feelings to others. You did that! listening, I felt just what you said and what I said above, don't let the neg's
that was really amazing man,I used to play this song a lot,but never got the sound right, maybe you could give me some hints??how did you get a sound like that,ar you using any pedals??plzzz help>>>JEFF BECK RULEZ
iggypoprulez - Thanks! Sure, I'll try to help wherever I can. I actually started a little how-to video on this a few months ago, but I didn't like how it turned out. As far as effects go, there's just a little chorus and reverb. I think the key is in the note-bending and vibrato. Jeff Beck likes to find unorthodox ways of hitting the notes he wants, such as bending up (or down) to notes that he could just as easily hit straight-on. Albert King was another guitarist who took that approach.
that really helped me,i used the reverb, but never tried the chorus-which makes a big difference,i always used too much gain, now the sound is 10000 times better,THANKS!!you are really good
Thank you! It's nice to "drop the pick" every so often. Knopfler is definitely one of the all-time greats. I haven't had the courage to give any of his stuff a try yet. You're obviously doing very well with it!
I'm definitely willing to help out! The chord progression is:
D, Bmin, G, D (3 times through) then Bmin, Emin, G, D.
I've been trying to put a little instructional video together that goes over the subtleties of this tune, but I haven't liked how my attempts have turned out so far. But I'll keep trying.
Well done for leaving out that high riff. Jeef Beck is great, but he repeats that to death... by the third time he's playing it, I'm wishing he'd stop!
GreenAsJade - Thank you! When I was first putting this together, I wasn't sure whether or not to put that high riff in. I'm glad you like it the way it is!
Very smooth. I like the way you fingerpicked it just like Jeff would have. I just kept waiting to hear that high note riff, but you left it out. Still very good job.
2manyguitars - Thank you! I was actually tempted to put that high note riff in, but I was never quite satisfied with the sound I was getting with it. So my version ended up being a bit mellower. The funny parts is, I showed a friend of mine how the high-part goes, and now he does it that way his band! Maybe I should have another try at it sometime.
woods2345 - Thanks! My version did end up being a bit of a hybrid between the original Curtis Mayfield tune and the version that Jeff Beck came up with. I love both of them, but I thought if I tried too hard to imitate one or the other, it would just end up sounding like an imperfect copy. So this is my spin on it. Glad you liked it!
I know the lead part you're talking about, and it's beautiful the way Jeff Beck did it. For this version though, I wasn't really strongly drawn toward doing that. My instincts told me to keep it a bit mellower with clean lead lines and chordal solos.
Very tasteful and extremely well done...great tone wit the in-between pickup selection. I looked on the net but couldn't find any tab for the chord progression as you play it. Could you please post a link to the correct tab/the tab you used or maybe email it to me.....
I sent this link to several other guitar player friends and they agreed that it's the best they have seen on Youtube....this is what Youtube all about.
RobertStratSonic - A big "Thank you" to you and your friends! I actually didn't use any tab on this one, but I'll see if I can find a some tab that is reasonably close to the way I did it. I'll be sure to send a link to you as soon as I find it.
This was an awesome take on the song. This is and always will be among my favorite tunes and you did it great justice. Jeff and Curtis would be proud.
straight from the heart, only ;-) - can you suggest some others in similar style, I looked among your movies but only found things that were much more stressful - Otherwise I'm reduced to Ry Cooder ;-)
Nice job dude, i like your imporv, do you know how to work double or triple string chord soloing? (not sure if theres a name for it, but if there was that would be it) I'm just getting into it, you should post some vids of that stuff maybe ill learn something. I learned little wing and ever since then have been followng the r&b path, its the most satisfying stuff i've ever learned, anyway good job
Thank you! Yes, what you're referring to is most commonly called the "double-stop" or "triple-stop." I like it because it really blurs the distinction between what people consider "rhythm" versus "lead." For R&B music, Curtis Mayfield is definitely the king. His style can be used to not only make solos sound more complete, but also make rhythm parts sound fuller too. Jimi Hendrix borrowed a lot from him on songs like "Little Wing" and "The Wind Cries Mary."
Thank you! Yes, it is indeed my pride & joy, the Frankenstrat.
You're right, there is a strong resemblance between the chord progressions in this tune and in "Waiting on the World to Change." John Mayer has some good influences. I love R&B and Soul music, so I would definitely be up for doing more stuff like this. I hope to hear more music from you, too!
Smooth, sweet,& soulful. You got the heart and soul to play that song. Thank you for showing me there is still some guys out there that have feeling in there playin.
Hi Klasek, Thanks for your response.
Thanks.

Delightful, thank-you! Very much nicer to listen to than either the Jeff Beck or the Curtis Mayfield originals. David the Harper

straight from the heart, only ;-) - can you suggest some others in similar style, I looked among your movies but only found things that were much more stressful - Otherwise I'm reduced to Ry Cooder ;-)

Thank you! This is one of those tunes where the temptation to overplay can be very strong. But I've slowed down in my (semi)old age.

Really good stuff Keith! You nailed the timing spot on, and added a really good laid back feel to it.
Did you play this on your 'Frankenstrat'?
It's really reminiscent of some 'John Mayer' style improvisation. Even the chords from the song remind me of 'waiting on the world to change' by him.
You should definitely play some more laid back soulful stuff like this! Good job!
