Unless you live on a slope, or where there are many hills, a fixie doesn't do so much to your knees. My solution is to just get a large gear/chain-ring ratio. This also lengthens your gear's life, and you wouldn't be able to go as fast, but who needs to on a commute?
fixies are easier on maintenance; usually have more durable drive-trains (provided you had not spent cheaply on them); can go faster than roadies on flat grounds; and are just a load of fun to ride.
fixed gear is a single gear........ You can't change it. Why would that be in the Tour? That is like asking why there arent geared bikes on a velodrome. Think this through before you comment with what you believe is a "smart" remark.
Recumbents are very fast indeed... at least until they face even the slightest incline, which is when a fixie/roadie may have an advantage, because even the lightest recumbent is still quite heavy. Their costs, even if mass-manufactured is still quite high in comparison. Maintenance is a pain, due to so many moving parts.
fixies are much cooler then those wack bikes !

"fixies are easier on maintenance"
I sincerely hope that the maintenance of your knees 20 years from now is also as easy.

I agree with the fake triathlete. Next time throw a brick and aim for his hipster "fixy" head.

"can go faster than roadies on flat grounds"
are you sure?
Why don't I see Fixed Gear bikes at Tour de France Flat Stage Time Trials then?

Fixed gears are an upgrade from your typical road bike. Track bicycling is pure bicycling.
