  • R.I.P Hank Gathers

  • These guys were a class act. Oh my goodness. They speak better than 90% of the players in the NBA! Someone commented that they had no earrings or tattoos...they also had no braids or dreadlocks. They were just classy, well-spoken, elegant, apparently sensible young men. These are the kind of young men that you hope your daughter brings home. The garbage that is out there these days makes me fear for my three daughters!!!

  • no net info on 1990. one on one tournament with kimble, coles, burton, payton, etc i use to have on vhs days. i also have a cool music vhs based on 1993, 92 players called rocking the rim. Kimble is in heaven is are playground. have no seen that for a decade.

  • Two very well spoken classy men. No thug shit. No tattoos either!!! God bless Hank Gathers. RIP

  • R.I.P hank

  • How the hell did bo kimble suck so bad in the NBA. He was dumped to the knicks and we use to joke that he had the splinter of the ass injury because he never got off the bench but still always got hurt. We figured he got hurt from sitting all game

  • Thank you for posting this. That team, having grown up in Southern California, meant so much to me.

  • Very spooky when he mentions the size of his heart at 3:45. Wikipedia says he died of a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy..... aka an enlarged heart.

  • 3:45 "I have the heart the size of a lion" Ironic he mentions his heart in reference to a strong characteristic. In reality, iyt beig so weak, it ended his life. I've been drinking, so I"m relaly not even sure that made sense>?

  • Ha! Bo Kimble rockin' the turtleneck & blazer

  • Man to see both of them in the NBA together would have been nice R.I.P Hank

  • I remember the death of Loyola MaryMOUNT player Eric HANK Gathers (194-54-5437) quite vividly since it was one of the big news stories during my freshman year in college. Watching the closeness of Gathers & teammate BO KIMble in this interview, I could hear 2008 Republican V.P. nominee, Sarah Louise HEATH Palin saying: *Drill baby, drill*, partly due to the tough drive needed to win college basketball games, partly because GATHERS was born on PALIN*s 3rd birthday. Unrelated: Obama W.H. dog, BO

  • I couldnt help but notice in newspaper birth notices: BO KIMble is not Obama White House dog, BO, but he was born APRIL 9, 1966, meaning AARON ELijah Boone was born on KIMble*s 44th birthday. While Obama is the 44th prez & HANK Gathers wore jersey #44, it*s unrelated that AARON ELijah*s mother is SARAH- -even though Obama beat Arizona Sen. John SIDNEY McCAIN & SARAH Louise HEATH PALIN on the Republican side to win the 2008 election. Unrelated: community college; ARIZONA*s WICK Communications

  • AARON Elijah Boone (b. 2010) shares APRIL 9th birthday with BO KIMble (b. 1966). Boone has a brother, AVERY GRANT Boone, who is unrelated to Atlantic Coast Conference sports stars AARON CURRY (Winston-Salem, NC*s Wake Forest Univ. football) or GRANT HENRY HILL (DurHAM, NC*s Duke Univ. basketball). AVERY County, NC has seat Newland & towns: Banner ELK; Beech Mountain, crossNOre, ELK Park, GRANDFATHER, Linville, Minneapolis, PINEola, SEVEN DEVILS (fits nicely with gathering HANKS), Sugar Mountain

  • BRYANt GUMbEL was born the same day as IRA R. GENDEL (137-38-6215): SEP. 29, 1948. While IRA might reflect the 1981 split, moving middle initial *R* behind *G* makes GRENDEL and could evoke the fall of 1988 and the ridiculous, botched *boasting* assignment: a tutorial on the presidential election process. At the time GUMbEL was hosting NBC*s Olympic coverage that saw boxer Roy Jones Jr. jobbed out of a gold medal; crooked judges gave it to PARK Si-Hun, native son of host country South Korea

  • All born on SEP. 29, 1948 & all could reflect the 1981 split: T. P. HOPKINS (could evoke toilet paper; 012-40-1836); JAMES VAUGHN (last residence: Malvern, CHESTer County, PA; 183-40-8578) could evoke First Lady Michelle ROBINSON VAUGHN Obama; Denise B. BASTIAN (185-38-5895; dropping the *SEB*Leroy ATKINS (151-40-8859) & LAURENCE LANGley (139-40-0811) could evoke new beginnings, considering the Spring 1990 Argus staff at the former Slater Industrial College, founded by Dr. Simon Green ATKINS

  • LAURENCE LANGley (139-40-0811) & LeROY ATKINS (151-40-8859) were born on the same day as bRYANt Charles GUMbEL: Sep. 29, 1948. Their esoteric links to new college beginnings through the Spring 1990 Argus staff at the former Slater Industrial, founded by Dr. Simon Green Atkins, are unrelated to Duke Univ.*s GRANT HENRY HILL & Antonio LANG becoming roommates in Fall 1990 or StePHen LUCAS directed *Dude Ranch* with CAMERON Kelly & Erich LANGe released in 1989—before their games at CAMERON Indoor

  • Watching Hank Gathers (194-54-5437) interview, I wracked my brain trying to figure who he reminded me of. Not sure I nailed it, but I finally settled on Thomas E. Williams (b. 7/11/59; 076-50-6369). Working under name Joe Simmons could evoke Gathers high school era friend, Lionel JAMES "L-Train" Simmons (b. 11/14/68). Joe Simmons died Oct, 2, 1995--the day before O.J. Simpson was acquitted in the *Trial of the Century* in Los Angeles; he worked with Randy COCHRAN, like Simpson attorney Johnnie

  • Technically, the O.J. Simpson jury reached a verdict in his double murder trial on the same day adult star Joe Simmons died (born Thomas E. Williams on 7/11/59; 076-50-6369). But presiding Judge Allan Lance ITo ordered it sealed until 10 AM PDT, the next day, Tuesday, OCT. 3, 1995. The *downtown* jury was criticized in some quarters for deliberating just four hours after hearing testimony in a trial lasting more than a year. Adult*s JACK Baker died one day b4 Lionel *L-Train* Simmons* 26th b*day

  • Hank Gathers* friend from his high school days in PHILADELPHIA, Lionel JAMES *L-TRAIN* Simmons was born 11/14/68. Adult star Jack Baker died one day before Simmons* 26th birthday. RAY beam genital attack could be derived from JACK BAKER (b. 1947), considering online sources site his birthday as JUNE 4th--the same day 246-62-0093 was born in 1922. *FAMILY FEUD* comedian RAY COMBS died exactly 13 years before 246-62-0093 in GLENdale, CA. Unrelated: not COMBing hair to mommy*s satisfaction; LeMans

  • Adult*s Jack Baker was born John Anthony BAILEY on June 4, 1947. He shared a JUNE 4 birthday with 246-62-0093 (b. 1922), who died in NASH County, NC. It*s unrelated to NFL Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Frazier Peppers* hometown of BAILEY in NASH County, NC. The index didn*t readily reveal a listing for Baker, but John W. McNABB was also born JUNE 4, 1947 (488-54-6799), dying one day after Bastille Day in 1994. Unrelated: NFL QB Donovan McNABB, drafted by the PHILADELPHIA Eagles in 1999

  • NBA player LIONEL *L-TRAIN* Simmons could evoke character LIONEL *L-TRAIN* Johnson from NBC Saturday morning sitcom, *City Guys*, played by Steven DaniEL. IMDB shows DaniEL*s birthday as Jan. 4, 19?? DaniEL was ADRIAN upCHURCH in a PALINdrome 2002 episode of *NYPD Blue* & Lazarus DEMON in the 100th episode of the series *Charmed* titled *Centennial Charmed*. Directed by JAMES L. CONway, it aired 1/19/03--written by BRAD KERN, but unrelated to the son of TV*s bRYANt GUMbEL or watch?v=lsr80Yyru-w

  • NBC sitcom *City Guys* starred: WESLEY JONATHAN (b. 10/18/78) as JAMAL GRANT. It*s unrelated to Donovan JAMAL McNABB, 242-54-4062, or basketball*s GRANT HENRY Hill. MARcellA LOWery shares APRIL 27 birthday with Newark, NJ mayor Cory Booker (b. 1969) & U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC 1st, b. 1947). LOWery played MANny High Principal Karen Coretta NOBLE in *City Guys* & Donovan McNabb*s mother in a series of CAMPbell Chunky Soup TV ads. Unrelated: son of 4949; *Charmed* director ROXann DAWSON

  • AWKWARD MOMENT 4:15

  • RIP Hank. I hate to look in the past and think about the what if's.....But to see Hank and Bo in the NBA together would have been a beautiful thing.

  • why was he 23 or so and still playing? Couldn't pass?

  • Went to Southern Cal out of high school. Transferred to LMU after freshman year. Had to sit out a year because of NCAA rules on transferring.

  • No. He went to Southern Cal out of high school. After his freshman year he transferred to LMU. NCAA rules state you have to sit out for one full season if you transfer, but you don't lose a year of elgibility. So he was still a sophomore athletically when he started playing for LMU, but a junior academically. By the way, from everything I've ever heard, Hank was a pretty good student.

  • It sucks that he died. He is one of so many what if's. I mean, what if he actually did not die at all? Nobody knows and nobody will never know. All I know is that this is, was, and always will be a tragedy in basketball.

  • they would have won it all that year...

  • RIP forever Hank - you would have been so proud of Bo for what he was able to do without you there

  • he said he had a heart the size of a lion and thats why he would have been an NBA star. a little ironic. not meaning to be disrespectful.

  • Seems like only yesterday, but still an eternity since we lost him. May the road rise to meet you my friend, R.I.P.

  • Hank passed away 20 years ago today. R.I.P

  • what could of been

  • I love that Gathers would openly admit that he is not a shooter. He was not offended at all

  • kimble's nba career never amounted to much, but gathers would have been a beast. he and len bias would have been all stars at the same time, no doubt about it.

  • you dont think hanks death played a part in bo's career.

i watched him in the pros and whenever he sat on the bench the pain showed. and the camera would focus in on him for dramatic effect. we all could see what it did to him.

he lost a step when hank passd. he wasnt flashy anymore. it was as if he didnt want to play.

  • I"ll never forget Hank... sadly his life was cut way too short ... The day he died was a very sad day...

  • "I have a heart the size of a lion" ... and its sadly what failed him.

  • I met Hank and had him sign my programe vs. the portland pilots in 1989.

    #44 ! things happen quick.

  • I don't really think it's fair to just throw Ron Artest's name out there like that and imply a question like "why couldn't he die instead?"

  • Unbelievable how prim and proper these guys were in 1990. Now most young athletes cant form sentences correctly. Its a damn shame how our modern humanity has suffered. Back then even if someone liked to dress in chains and glitter, they still spoke a certain way. Nowadays it seems people slur every word they say and every other word is stupid slang. Throw your TV sets away, the media is ruining us...read a book...maybe it wont help us too much, but it will help out the next generation.

  • Yes.

  • Hell, don't even throw out the TV. Just don't watch the junk. Look hard, and you'll find programming that opens the mind.

I second the reading bit though. The most important thing is to keep an open mind and strive to learn, no matter how you achieve that.

  • I was actually thinking when I was watching this how articulate and well spoken Bo and Hank are compared to many athletes today.

  • They are articulate and well spoken. Period.

  • Meant to give you the thumbs up. I noticed that as well. That's always nice to see.

  • @dixie11

God bless you buddy. I completely agree. The artificial modern liberal pop culture is ruining the West.

  • @dixie11 why are you watching youtube then??

  • @AxelPRC because im responsible enough to differentiate between watching filth and things that i can gain beneficial knowledge from

  • @dixie11 ok please tell me how this is beneficial knowledge? how does this help further yourself as a person? 99% of anything you see individually means nothing. Collectively it does, so who are you to say that "filth" is not beneficial?

  • @AxelPRC Because its of interest to myself and things I am interested in and it doesnt harm anyone or send out a dumb message, im glad you are supportive and understand of not judging anything, have fun with your mediocare life

  • @heyitsleom so who are you to judge others who watch things that interest them even if it might be things that you may see as "dumb"? People are free to make their own decisions. While I see your point the world is forever changing and you need to live with it and stop downing the people that "choose" to watch what you perceive to be garbage

  • @AxelPRC you keep missing the point, if you scroll up and read my original paragraph I state that people talk in slang and dont speak in proper ways..whats is wrong with conserving the english language and speaking it the way it was proposed? do you understand what I am even talking about, or are you just trying to prove to me something that i am already aware of, any progressive thinker understands that everyone has opinions and make their own choices

  • @heyitsleom im not missig the point. Language changes so it deal with it. Ive got a life so im going to leave this conversation at this.

  • @dixie11 I agree a lot of young people are like that though I'm not one of them. I love surprising people with my proper speech.

  • R.I.P. Hank Gathers life isn't fair... the good die young

  • bo kimble ... i know this cat!

  • Hank was a stud. The only person to lead the NCAA in scoring and rebounding in the same year. He was great. What a shame he is gone too young. Bo was never the same after he lost his best friend.

  • not the only... xavier mcdaniel was the first (5 years before hank)

  • Hank would've been a solid NBA player, something like Kurt Thomas at the least.

  • i have the movie

Final shot" sad but great movie

  • 3:46 - "i have the heart of a lion, any lion" (c) Hank Gathers :(

  • Bo Kimble was a Bust in the draft but a great person

  • watching this is so wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time...when Bo shot his first free throw left-handed in the NCAA tournament in Hank's honor, it kills me everytime...these two will always be connected...R.I.P Hank!

  • R.I.P HANK !!!

  • I remembered that Hank gathers clapse on the Loyola marymount basket ball court, then died later in the hospital from a heart arrythmia on march 4 1991. he was a very open hearted, brave and a very sweet guy. REST IN PEACE !

  • You got zero class you computer nerd.... RIP Hank and sorry you had that heart problem ... life isn't fair bro...

  • bo kimble stood in front of me in Orlando for the mummy ride at universal studios. it was pretty cool

  • he said he has a "heart the size of a lion..."!

one of the saddest stories in sports. they definitely coulda' won the whole thing.

  • Still such a sad story with Hank. They used to show that movie "the hank gathers story" every march but I haven't seen it in a long time.

  • I saw that movie and it was a very good movie ! I almost cry, when i looked at it, because he was a very sweet and a brave guy and because he always loves to play basket Ball.

  • Cant believe there are no LMU 1990 NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES or clips. Put em up!!! They scored like 150 ppg per game and shot tons of 3's-extremely exciting to watch!!

  • 2001 ronnie mcclum centanary 2002 jason conley virginia military institute 2003 ruben douglas new mexico 2004 keydren clark st peters 2005 keydren clark st peters 2006 adam morrison gonzaga 2007 reggie williams virginia military institue.. • You could have saved yourself the effort and just have said you are a heartless asshole.....to come on this vid and post that? Dick.

  • just trying to make a point... some clueless basketball fans think he would've been a star in the NBA which is ludicrous....

  • tvtechwonV. The only point you make is that you are a no-class moron.

  • tvtech what have you done with you career u cocksucker? stop hating let him rest in peace legends never die and he was one

  • lol @ your troll self

  • Gather's grew up in a heavily scouted area in Philly. There's a reason why no Big East or ACC scouts never really pursued Gathers. He went to USC which is not really known for basketball and wasn't good enough to get playing time against PaC 10 competition. therefore he went to WCC which has teams like san diego santa clara hawaii san francisco portland pepperdine saint marys. Gather's couldn't shoot, dribble, nor pass and wasn't skilled enough to ever play in the NBA.

  • I have nothing against Gather's ,but he would'nt have had much of a career in the NBA.. Gather's was too small to play PF and not skilled enough and couldn't shoot to play SF in the NBA.. He would have been a swing man off the bench to give energy at best... Please don't tell me about Gather's leading the NCAA in scoring and rebounds.. He played in WCC... Nice Kid, Sad Story ,but bottom line he didn't have much of a game for the NBA...

  • Actually Hank scored 48 pts against LSU and 13

  • and your point is????

  • I remember that moment that Hank Gathers died, I believe my father & I were watching a UNLV game.

  • on this anniversary of Hanks untimely passing let us remember this talented son of the Philadelphia playgrounds who GOD made a first round draft pick

  • .R.I.P. MY CUSSIN U WILL BE MISS

  • the heart of a lion, wow this is so sad.. i have the movie they made about him called final shot! if u havent seen it you should go check it out!

  • I'm from Philly and played against these two guys in the public league. Dobbins blew us out. You just knew both of these guys would play pro ball. I couldn't believe it when Hank Passed. I have the 1990 championship on tape and segments of Hank still get to me. I knew this brother (RIP) Dunkin in Heaven

  • Tragic as Hank Gathers death is he didn't have a NBA game... RIP Gathers...

  • I truly beg to differ. He may not have been an elite player or the highest scorer, but he would have been a menace on the boards, much like Dennis Rodman was, undersized forwards who were tenacious rebounders. I am insulted by this. Any real fan of Gathers and that LMU team would see he RAN the court, rebounded on BOTH ENDS, made most of his points getting garbage rebounds because the offense was never designed for low post play. I could go on, but I have just 25 characters left. Now it's 0

  • listen boy.. gathers didn't have an NBA game.. he would have barely made an NBA team with his lack of skills... And don't give me he would have been like Rodman... There's only one player in the history of the NBA like Rodman...

  • umm yeah.. leading the NCAA in rebounding and scoring is nothing special huh?

  • when you play in the west coast conference yeaaaah it does mean nothing... do you know any teams that play in the wcc???? san francisco san diego st mary's pepperdine portland santa clara... not exactly powerhouse competition. i rest my case...

  • like i said.. he lead the NCAA in rebounding and scoring.. i rest my case.

so the WCC or a weaker conference should provide us with the leading scorer and rebounder every year from what you're saying? So who's the last player to do this in the WCC??... or in the NCAA for that matter??

  • hey dumbass he played in wcc.. look it up every year scoring leaders come from weak ass conferences because the competition sucks... you are clueless and have no friggin idea about basketball. go away boy...

  • i'm dumb and you're calling someone that led the NCAA in rebounding and scoring a bad player??

and FYI there's been 3 players in the history(yes, that's HISTORY) of the NCAA to do what Hank did that year. And the other two played in the NBA.

  • history???? we're talking about if Gathers had a game to play in the NBA... and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO he didn't you fuck... so go dig up his grave and suck his rotted away cock you fuckn gather lover... go suck a dead dick you fuck face...

  • i never said i love hank gathers.. i was just saying that it is impressive to lead the NCAA in either catorgory.. and he did both.

why do you hate gathers so much? what did he do to you?

  • Your original analysis made sense and was well thought out but you have now really moved into the realm of EXTREMELY bad taste. Let's remember a young, bright, talented kid is dead. He has a family that could easily read this stuff. Chill out some.

  • Asshole...There are as many players in the WCC as there are in every other conference...PAC 10, BIG 10, ACC, etc. To lead your conference in both categories out of all those players is an amazing feat. Um, let's see...what else...oh yeah, SUCK IT.

  • are you on drugs???? are you saying wcc is equal in talent to acc big 10 and pac 10 sec???? got issues????

  • Asshole...There are as many players in the WCC as there are in every other conference...PAC 10, BIG 10, ACC, etc. To lead your conference in both categories out of all those players is an amazing feat. Um, let's see...what else...oh yeah, SUCK IT.

  • name any big time players in the last 10 years that came out and was a big time player in the NBA... None... Bitch so STFU... you can''t see me Biaaatch...

  • hey dumbass are you saying there is the same equal amount of talent in the wcc as there are in the pac 10 big 10 acc sec big east??? uuuuh are you on drugs??? can you name any player from wcc to come out to the NBA and have a descent career??? john stockton came out of gonzaga like 20 years ago so stfu on that one... look at the ncaa scoring leaders the past 30 years and see what kind of names you get and what conferences they played in... your a fuckn moron...

  • Hey, whack job- Steve Nash went to Santa Clara. Last time I checked- that's a WCC school. About the moron crack? It takes one to know one, quite clearly.

  • Gathers averaged 29 points a game THE YEAR HE DIED! That's the year AFTER he led the country is BOTH SCORING AND REBOUNDING! The man had a bad heart and was still the #5 scorer in the country! Quite the opposite, I think he would have been a lock as a lottery pick, ripping other power forwards apart with his already soft touch, his tenacity, his great ability to run the court, and his neverending energy. Hate on me if you wish, but you are WRONG WRONG WRONG about Hank as a player. Own up!

  • How can you say that. He never even had a chance to show what he can do on an NBA court. That's a bogus assumption.

  • If you know anything anything about the NBA game you would understand.. As tragic as it was Gathers dying he was too small to play pf and not skilled enough to play sf in the NBA.. and please understand gather's played in west coast conference which is not exactly acc, sec, bigeast, big ten competition. Listen, Gathers played hard but it's a simple fact that he didn't have an NBA game and wouldn't have had a much of an NBA career.

  • You were missing Gonzaga in that aswell, besides, I believe Doug Christie was considered under sized, and he happened to be a solid player in the NBA, he also just happened to play college ball at Pepperdine.

  • good comment on doug christie.. but christie is a skilled player who could dribble and shoot the ball.. gathers at 6 7 had no perimeter game and was too small to play pf. you can be a good player in college ,but to play in the pros you would need skills.. Gathers is a tragic story but he wouldn't have made it in the NBA with his lack of skills...

  • I understand the fact that Christie was a shooting guard, but that's not to say that whoever would have drafted Gathers wouldn't switch him to a small forward. In the NBA he probably would be more suited to play that position. Besides after watching clips of him it seems like he was athletic enough to hang with the NBA.

  • I regret to inform you that you are a loser. Sorry to break that fact to you. LOL.

  • Hey dickface can you name any player who had any kind of career in the last 30 years who ever did anything in the NBA???? there's a reason why he didn't get a chance to play in USC.. it was PAC 10... he went to a scrubby ass conference against scrubby ass competition... Bo Kimble was much more highly regarded as a prospect than gathers by NBA scouts and what happened to his career??? your the one who has no knowledge bitch...

  • you are without a doubt the bill o'reilly of sports commentating. he STARTED his freshman year at usc. the reason he left is because LMU had a squad, and him and bo kimble wanted to turn the team in to something great, which they did.

    stop lying,

    bend down,

    and suck my dick tvtechy

  • Well, we'll never know but he was projected to be drafted so somebody in the know thought he had pro game. I'll tell you what, he took it to Shaq down in Baton, playing next to Stanley O'Neal. I think Hank dropped 30 and had 14 that day, although LMU lost the game.

  • Bo Kimble Draft Bust his career was plagued with injuries

  • sometimes it seems like some of the best are taken from us way to early in life.

  • I would love to kill byrant racist fucker

  • hank gathers would've been a nba star had it not been for his tragic death

  • dobbins philly baby rip hank

  • philly all day

  • I would like to see the game where Hank had the heart attach. This is such a heart breaking story.. Hank was so tallented and such a great guy and he had to die way way too soon.

  • This is just a few months before Hank died.

  • bo kimble started playing like a bust when hank died, wouldve like to see what he could really do

  • man.

  • man i read bo kimble's book..it was so sad i'm serious

  • good video..apparently Byrant Gumble was white back then.

  • Uh...Bryant Gumble is white NOW too.

  • Does anyone happen to have any footage of any of their super super high scoring games? I want to see the ones where they set records for points in a game.

  • does anyone know where to find the video of the free throw?

  • Classic...thanks for the post

  • It is kind of bittersweet that they both said that they needed to play at least 1 season in the NBA. Hank died before playing in the NBA. Bo's injuries stopped him from playing more than 2 1/2 seasons. I guess Bo played one for Hank and one for himself. Just like shooting his first free-throw left-handed in honor of Hank.

  • Does anybody have the actual game where Hank has his heart attack!?!

...I remember watching it live as a kid, but have never seen it since?

  • It almost breaks my heart, Hank saying he had the heart of a lion.

  • Brian, Thanks for posting this... It brings back a lot of great memories. -Phil

  • Great stuff! If anyone has the clip of Kimble and Jeff Fryer on Arsenio Hall, I'd love to see it. Thanks again!
