The White doll don't look cute, I prefer the Black doll. As a Blackman I really don't get it. What is so attractive about looking White?
Yes u do have ugly and beauty in every race, however I am not and never will be convinced that European or close to European features are more attractive than Black or African features.
I find it weird that a good number of Black people think Black skin or the darker shade of Black skin is ugly.
@afroblack1000 my mom never had to have a "race" or "color" talk with me when i was this girls ageshe taught me by having a doll of EVERY RACE and told me that they were all the same and they should all be loved equally.
So, in other words the reason why a child would see a black doll is not a good doll compared to that of the white doll, you dont see many little girls carrying around a BLACK baby doll. so they thinl "ew, no one carries around a black baby it MUST be BAD." think of it that way
@afroblack1000 and i know you may not think of the white baby doll as attractive now, but in a childs mentality they think different. Thats why as a parent of color or even non color having this chat and teaching your kids to be kind to EVERYONE is very important. I was also bullied when i was in elementary school becayse of my skin color. and im in college now. no matter what happens racism will not die any time soon unless we CHANGE this. I am a proud african american female and i love myslf
I'm white. I believe in evolution. Whiteness is nothing more than an adaptation to cold climates – our skin faded over tens of thousands of years spent travelling away from Mother Africa. My black ancestors left Africa to colonise the world bringing agriculture, technology and language. I hold on to this fact; it's the only way I can have any dignity or feel good about myself when I consider the terrible things done down the centuries by white people to their black brothers and sisters.
@LIB4me Ironic how this article is about "self hate" when you seem to feel guilty about something that was done generations ago! If white people are descended from black people, surely the "terrible things" were done to themselves? Look at the atrocities committed in numerous sub-saharan African countries at present, how are you gonna blame white people for them? I am white and I have never owned a slave nor have I oppressed anyone, I need not feel guilty for the past, only my past!
hmmm this is very alarming... thius sort of experiement happend in Britian. they put a pciture of timothy mcvay up and another of a black man.. i can't remeber who it was, but he was a succesful man. they told the group of black kids which 1 is more likly to be a prisoner and they all said the black man apart from 1. we need to teach kids that being black is something to be proud of as we have come a long way as a race.
@frontstance@frontstance the program came up like 2 years back. place called Birmingham, they were following this boys life ad it was an episode of being proud of who you are, and it happened their. i don't think the footage can be found anywhere on youtube, i'll have a look though
This girl's a natural ham in front of the camera, most 4yrolds avoid the lens. But serious it seems like the parents need to monitor what she watches on the tube...
I remember my little sister told my father to get her a white barbie doll. My dad lost his cool and TOLD her she was going to get the black one and he bought the black barbie doll for her. We need to stop being so fucking naive and stop thinking that this race issue is over with here in America. The self hate among Black Americans is at an all time high and is VERY real. Don't let any cooning uncle Tom, Black Mammy, or Racist White American Supremacist with an agenda tell you otherwise.
This child may have future issues its all down to parenting. I bet she watches a lot of TV and hears a lot of crap. You need to do the test over a wider scale with black children from different living backgrounds and levels of interlect. I bet she knows the song words to a beyonce song SMH glad it aint my child
"Early exposure to certain black images in cartoons, toys and activity books are good solutions to fighting self-hatred."
Then do those things and stop whining about airbrushed white women. And you are correct blacks SELF-identify, yet you claim media forces an identity on them. You have a very sad outlook on free will. Its like you think black people are born with puppet string and the media pulls them.
@alexcowart In nowhere on this board was I whining. I neither whine nor complain, I identify the problem and then I suggest a solution. What i'm posting is exactly what you would call taking responsibility for our own image. I'm not begging media outlets to do anything for us, i'm creating and supporting outlets that project a better and more accurate image of blacks while advocating that more blacks do the same.
@funkbrother216 For the sake of the argument lets pretend that media does influence kids to hate themselves.
How much tv has the kid been watching? What kind of tv have they been watching?
As a parent you should regulate what the kids are watching. At that age they should be watching educational cartoons not flipping through Cosmo or whatever magazines you are referring to.
Raise your children to have proper values, don't rely on the tv to do it for you. That is my main point.
Grown up Blacks that deny their African ancestry are no different from Black Children that find Black dolls ugly and White dolls pretty. This video clip is so upsetting
IF BLACK CHILDREN ARE NOT TAUGHT THEIR TRUE HISTORY they are always going to favor other than THEMSELVES....The little girl CLEARLY said the black doll is UGLY & the white doll is BEAUTIFUL...The interviewee asked, "which doll looks LIKE YOU & the child held up THE BLACK DOLL.....So what does that say? She's got a black doll that LOOKS LIKE HER that she says is UGLY & she DOES NOT want to PLAY WITH IT.......THAT'S A PROBLEM!!!!
wow it's all around us as a people subconciously we are seeing the teaching of hate to our kids thats why black people can't get along notice when white people gather there is no need for heavy police presence but when we gather we get the army black people don't like each other i can say that we need change badly.
I don't see anything wrong with this. I think it is being blown out of proportion. So what she prefers a white toy, that says nothing about her preference in partners later in life. It says little about how she will be when she is mature. All it says about her is that she finds a white toy more attractive. For all I know there was no cultural influence, perhaps white people really are more attractive (I actually think so, no I am not racist)
@alexcowart I don't think you understand what is going on here. It's not that she finds one more attractive than the other, it's that she finds one ugly and that one happens to be the one that looks like herself. If she is already thinking her features are ugly at four years old how much worse is it going to be when she turns 13? Where'd a 4 year old get the information to construct in her mind that she's ugly? No kid should think that. That question needs to be answered. Also how can we fix it?
She is obviously a very intelligent, excited, and enthusiastic girl. I'm sure she will grow up to be a great person. I do not think that she finds herself ugly. When I played with toys I wanted the biggest muscley baddasses I could find. However I wasn't and still am not muscley or a badass. Do I hate myself? Maybe a little, but not because the media says big built muscley guys are the ideal. She is very impulsive, but will mature with age.
@lilkk234 She never once said she was ugly. You are putting words in her mouth. Perhaps the interviewer (I am assuming that it wasn't you) should have directly asked the girl if she thought she was pretty, rather than a doll.
If you give me a muscular doll and a flabby doll(like me) I will choose the muscular doll over the flabby doll. That doesn't mean I hate myself.
You are assuming too much. She doesn't think of herself as black or white, she thinks of herself as just herself.
@alexcowart She said that black is ugly and black is baaaaaad! I don't even have to read any further than the first sentence to know that you're only going to offer more meaningless, easily debunkable spin. Facts are facts.
@lilkk234 Have you even considered the possibility that she IS actually uglier than her white peers? I see more black men who loike white women than black men who like black women, should these black men be accused of racism too? We need to accept that there ARE differences between the races, that we are not all equal in abilities/appearance etc, but that we ARE equal in worth! I'm not the best looking guy in the world and I have learned to accept that! Not everyone looks the same!
@DonaldNice100 ...I hope this is a joke. No I've never considered that nonsensical idea because it's not true. I understand that there are individual differences and preferences but that's not what happened there. The two dolls were EXACTLY the same save for their skin color. If a person is deemed less beautiful simply because the color of their skin is not white and because they do not fit the eurocentric model of what beauty is then there is a problem in our society.
@DonaldNice100 Also, I don't believe a 4 year old child of ANY race should be thinking they are less beautiful than any other race. That type of thinking will seriously effect their lives in a negative way. So yes, to answer your question, I do think men who judge by skin color alone are racist and they have a lot of issues to work out within themselves as well.
@lilkk234 I agree. But why is it ok for people to accept that black or mixed race people are more athletic than their white peers, or more musically inclined? I would say that there is a lot of eveidence for these arguments, but why are they not considered racist? It seems that if a black person has abilities that a white person doesn't it is "fact" Whereas if a white person has abilities or attributes that a black person doesn't it is "institutionalised racism"? Let's be fair for once!
@DonaldNice100 If you want to make that argument I suggest you find a video that supports the claims you stated. This video has nothing to do with race and athleticism or race and singing ability. I want people to stop making generalizations and to stop accepting the ones they here. As a racially conscious individual I don't believe any stereotype I hear about any race and I don't appreciate you talking to me as if I did.
@lilkk234 There are certain facts about racial differences that if we do not accept, we will never be able to get past. If we can not get past these facts, we will never really conquer racism. It sounds like you would argue that we are all the same colour too! Generalisations are just that; "general" there are always exceptions, not all generalisations are based on fact but some are. This issue is a broad one, but it seems you only want to focus on the small part of it that suits you! Shame.
@DonaldNice100 Don't you think the disproportional amount of black people in the athletic world could be a result of social issues? I mean think about it. There are way more white people in college right? I think if black people would have had the opportunity to succeed academically from the very beginning we'd be looking at a very sports world. Also what sports do black people dominate in? Hockey? No. Basketball and football are relatively cheap sports to pick up.
@lilkk234 B-ball, soccer, NFL, boxing, sprinting, long distance running, rugby, the list is long. The argument for social issues is a good one, but then aren't a lot of supposed "race" issues actually "social" ones? I went to school with black children and believe me, they are faster runners! Is that a social issue? Even the black children with more money are were faster runners! I'm not trying to offend you, we both would like to see an end to racism, I just think you are ignoring certain facts
@DonaldNice100 B-ball, soccer, football, boxing, running, rugby...all cheap sports to pick up as a child. I play rugby and all you need is a ball and some friends. And yes, exactly what I'm saying. Most race issues are nothing more than social issues. Did you go to school with every black child in the country?? So what if every black kid at your school was fast?
@lilkk234 Again, your statement hardly disproves my point! If black children had access to more expensive sports, perhaps they would excel at these too! There are plenty of poor white people in the world, I grew up without the hope of going to college and yet despite all my efforts, I still suck at sports! It seems like you condemn my generalisations but accept your own, not all black people are poor! I think that the girl in the video has the right to find whichever doll she wants prettier.
@DonaldNice100 Yes perhaps they would. And if more white and Asian people were forced to make a decision between sports and poverty in America there'd be more in the NFL and NBA is what i'm saying. What percentage of black kids who try actually make it to the pros?? More black kids than white kids try out so there are more in the game but still the number who make it is NOT as high as you would think. I don't think you sucking at sports is because you're white. Maybe you just suck at sports.
@lilkk234 It is nice that you view all races as the same but for skin colour. Commendable yes, but accurate, no. You have the right intentions but not the facts. Did you know, for example, that there are more people in China with an IQ considered "genius" than there are people at all in America. This is a racial trait. Did you know that Native Americans have a pronounced metatarsal structure which gives them exceptional balance? Again, a racial trait! Greyhounds are faster than bulldogs; genetic
@DonaldNice100 Genetically speaking skin color is one of the most arbitrary ways of classifying people. Did you know that there is more genetic variation within Africa than anywhere else on Earth? Yet you think it's okay to saddle black people with certain traits.
@lilkk234 So what would you claim then? "There are more genetic variations..." etc and yet we are all the same?? It is really coming across like you have an issue about racial inequality, but you don't accept that there are any differences other than skin colour. If you care so much about an issue, you should research it better! You seem to imply that poverty is a black issue and yet you are opposed to generalisations? It seems to me like your opinions are contradictory and ill-conceived.
@DonaldNice100 I claim that 1) genetic variation alone does not have as big an influence on society as you are making it seem. Example: black athletic superiority in America. Not a genetic thing. 2) The most obvious genetic variation we know (skin color) is nothing to be ashamed of. Dark, light, in-between everyone should feel good about themselves.
@lilkk234 I absolutely concur! (Other than the genetic pre-disposition to athleticism, it seems you don't want to admit that there are advantages as well as disadvantages to being of a certain race) Other than that I take my hat off to you and wish you well in your goals, the world could do with more benevolent people!
@DonaldNice100 Many black kids suck at sports too but you only want to notice the Kobes and the Reggie Bushes because they help you feel better about your lack of athletic ability as well as your outlandish thoughts about race. And I'm not making generalizations I'm making observations. You have to look at the country's history and current state to make sense of what we see around us.
@DonaldNice100 That girl in the video should also have the right to love herself and find beauty in herself no matter what. Four years old is too young to think you're ugly especially if it's just because you're black. Period.
@lilkk234 The girl in the video has an opinion, it is you that makes it a racial issue! Get over your heritage, you are not as disadvantaged as you would like to think!
@DonaldNice100 I never said I was disadvantaged. I'm fully aware of what I've been given which is exactly why I find it disheartening that this little girl does not. Opinions don't just materialize out of thin air. She might not be able to explain her thought process but there is something wrong here.
That's were individual differences come in. My brother was the fasted kid in the state. I'm slow as molasses and we come from the same gene pool! Those same kids who were fast at running at your school might be slower than a white or latino or Asian kid from another school district or country. I just don't think you have enough information to make such a huge claim.
@lilkk234 Your own claims are pretty "huge", that a little girl who just happens to be black, states that a white doll is prettier, instead of being a mere opinion, to you it is a race issue. This is not the 1950s, we have come so far since then, why try and turn everything into an argument about inherent or institutional racism? Why not just do the best you can without making pre-emptive excuses for any future obstacles? Believe me, class will weigh far more heavily on your future than race!
@DonaldNice100 I feel like you are ignoring the important part. THE DOLLS WERE THE EXACT SAME! She said the doll with the darker skin was ugly. Where does a child (a dark skin child at that) get the impression that darker skin is uglier? Also she clearly identifies herself as the "ugly" doll. Do you understand the type of damage that would have on a child's psyche? She thinks she is ugly. No man woman or child should have that opinion of themselves.
@lilkk234 Plenty of people white, black, purple or whtever consider themselves ugly. Maybe the little girls thinks the lighter COLOUR is prettier without it being to do with race! You had the opportunity to attend college, I did not, but I'm not going to try and claim it is because of my race! It is because of my socio-economic level i.e class. The media is obsessed with beauty which breeds negative self image in children OF ALL RACES! Why try and claim every hardship as exclusively black?
@DonaldNice100 The definition of race is: Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics. So for her to find darker skin inherently uglier...yeah it is a racial thing. Do you think it's okay for her to think she's uglier than her light or white counterparts? If your daughter, sister, mother, or some other female you loved thought they were naturally ugly for some trivial reason would you just go "Well that's your opinion" or
@DonaldNice100 or would you try to convince them otherwise? Young girls who don't value themselves let other people take advantage of them. Would you be okay with that if it were you're daughter? And yes I agree the media does some fucked up things to children of ALL races not exclusively black children, but I go to a Nigerian church and I only have access to black children. But unlike yourself I don't deny they exist. I'd like to address them all and I'm sorry if I don't have the resources
@lilkk234 OK, let me get this straight, I have a daughter who is nearly 10 years old, she has had the same pressure on her to be beautiful from the media as any other child, I resent your implication that it is a racial issue because that devalues the suffering she and ALL children go through! I suppose you think mine or her life is easier because we are white? That is about as racist as you can get! I do not deny the existance of racism, but class problems are not exclusively black problems!
@DonaldNice100 Are you trying to say that there are no struggles that are unique to certain groups of people? I do believe there are issues that effect all young girls, i,e weight, fashion, breasts and beauty in general. But when it comes down to something like skin COLOR that IS a racial thing because only certain races have to deal with it.
@DonaldNice100 to do that just yet but someday I will. The entire country has a long way to go before it can be completely rid of social ills like racism.
@lilkk234 Again, I commend your goals they are honourable, but wouldn't it be better to tackle class issues rather than race? That way you will not be excluding people on the grounds of race! I think you have a good heart, but I also think you are a little misled.
@DonaldNice100 I would call it a class issue if it was about class. But it's not. It's about race. Children of all social classes from the same race are turning out the same response.
@lilkk234 OK, so according to you, if a black person excels at something (the athletic argument) then it is about class. If a black person is disadvantaged it is about race?
@DonaldNice100 A disadvantaged youth with little hopes of succeeding in anything but sports would no doubt exert ten times more energy than the average kid trying to make it athletically. Which is what we see when we watch ESPN. It's not all genetics.
@alexcowart interesting theory. In my experience, those people who don't see this as a problem tend to be those who think racism doesn't exist or prefix comments like yours with "i'm not racist but....I have black friends so I can't be racist....." I am black and I was racist to my own race and I didn't find black people attractive. I would also research conditioned responses of children and critical faculty development. If you were more informed, I doubt you would be so naive with your post
@alexcowart Of course you don't see anything wrong with it. You're white the type of thought process seen in this child helps you maintain your dominant position in society. That, however, is going to change. It won't all change overnight, but people like me are already teaching others to rear their child with an appreciation of who they are as I do.
@funkbrother216 Im all for raising your children to love themselves. I just don't think you should use television as a scapegoat. Media reflects the culture, it doesn't create it.
And for your information I am not white, you ignorant fool.
@alexcowart Television is not the scapegoat, it's the culprit and so are many media outlets that hypnotize us with airbrused white women on the covers. Early exposure to certain black images in cartoons, toys and activity books are good solutions to fighting self-hatred. You are not white but you still admit to being pro-white and, therefore, apathetic to the plight of how blacks serlf-identify.
I was raised in a white neighborhood and I never EVER felt that way about my color--these poor little black girls may not have daddies to tell them how cute they are--I kept my black dolls the longest and gave my white dolls away--my black baby doll was rare also[back in the early 60s, they were hard to find]
@49jubilee I don't think it's a father issue because all the kids I interviewed had present fathers. It really is more of a mom thing because they are the ones who tell their daughters what is beautiful and what isn't.
Iam latina, and I'am so proud of my parents. My favourite baby was a black one dressed in green, I still have it. And a Mulan Barbie. Thank God they taught me that we all are beautiful in our way.
These beautiful kids, need to have SO MUCH more self-steem. I hate what society teaches children. We gotta be so careful.
This is sad. It's hard to believe that this is still going on in 2010. I'm sure it's not just black people either. If you did this with Indian or Latino kids you would probably get a similar result. The fact that 4 out of 5 kids responded like this is really disappointing. I'm sure a lot of people grow out of this when they get older and smarter but I'm sure by then a lot of damage is already done.
@kuunami Michael Jackson didnt grow out of it,,,,,,,,,And you are right about the other races too. I guess people have to look a lot closer at how they raise their kids,,they seem very responsive to the unmentioned codes a lot more than we think i guess.
Ouch. I used to volunteer with a bunch of underprivileged kids in my city, and they were the same way. It's so sad how ingrained those kind of thoughts are!

Grow up, take responsibility for once.

@funkbrother216 The only problem that you named was "airbrushed white women" Do you think black female models don't get airbrushed as well?
I think you are misguided and looking for an easy answer when the issue is much more complex.

@alexcowart In nowhere on this board was I whining. I neither whine nor complain, I identify the problem and then I suggest a solution. What i'm posting is exactly what you would call taking responsibility for our own image. I'm not begging media outlets to do anything for us, i'm creating and supporting outlets that project a better and more accurate image of blacks while advocating that more blacks do the same.
funkbrother216 1 year ago
@funkbrother216 For the sake of the argument lets pretend that media does influence kids to hate themselves.
How much tv has the kid been watching? What kind of tv have they been watching?
As a parent you should regulate what the kids are watching. At that age they should be watching educational cartoons not flipping through Cosmo or whatever magazines you are referring to.
Raise your children to have proper values, don't rely on the tv to do it for you. That is my main point.

Grown up Blacks that deny their African ancestry are no different from Black Children that find Black dolls ugly and White dolls pretty. This video clip is so upsetting
afroblack1000 1 year ago
IF BLACK CHILDREN ARE NOT TAUGHT THEIR TRUE HISTORY they are always going to favor other than THEMSELVES....The little girl CLEARLY said the black doll is UGLY & the white doll is BEAUTIFUL...The interviewee asked, "which doll looks LIKE YOU & the child held up THE BLACK DOLL.....So what does that say? She's got a black doll that LOOKS LIKE HER that she says is UGLY & she DOES NOT want to PLAY WITH IT.......THAT'S A PROBLEM!!!!

wow it's all around us as a people subconciously we are seeing the teaching of hate to our kids thats why black people can't get along notice when white people gather there is no need for heavy police presence but when we gather we get the army black people don't like each other i can say that we need change badly.
genefury 1 year ago
I don't see anything wrong with this. I think it is being blown out of proportion. So what she prefers a white toy, that says nothing about her preference in partners later in life. It says little about how she will be when she is mature. All it says about her is that she finds a white toy more attractive. For all I know there was no cultural influence, perhaps white people really are more attractive (I actually think so, no I am not racist)
alexcowart 1 year ago 2
@alexcowart I don't think you understand what is going on here. It's not that she finds one more attractive than the other, it's that she finds one ugly and that one happens to be the one that looks like herself. If she is already thinking her features are ugly at four years old how much worse is it going to be when she turns 13? Where'd a 4 year old get the information to construct in her mind that she's ugly? No kid should think that. That question needs to be answered. Also how can we fix it?
lilkk234 1 year ago 14
@lilkk234
She is very impulsive, but will mature with age.
alexcowart 1 year ago
@lilkk234 She never once said she was ugly. You are putting words in her mouth. Perhaps the interviewer (I am assuming that it wasn't you) should have directly asked the girl if she thought she was pretty, rather than a doll.
If you give me a muscular doll and a flabby doll(like me) I will choose the muscular doll over the flabby doll. That doesn't mean I hate myself.
You are assuming too much. She doesn't think of herself as black or white, she thinks of herself as just herself.
alexcowart 1 year ago
@alexcowart She said that black is ugly and black is baaaaaad! I don't even have to read any further than the first sentence to know that you're only going to offer more meaningless, easily debunkable spin. Facts are facts.
funkbrother216 1 year ago
@lilkk234 Have you even considered the possibility that she IS actually uglier than her white peers? I see more black men who loike white women than black men who like black women, should these black men be accused of racism too? We need to accept that there ARE differences between the races, that we are not all equal in abilities/appearance etc, but that we ARE equal in worth! I'm not the best looking guy in the world and I have learned to accept that! Not everyone looks the same!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 ...I hope this is a joke. No I've never considered that nonsensical idea because it's not true. I understand that there are individual differences and preferences but that's not what happened there. The two dolls were EXACTLY the same save for their skin color. If a person is deemed less beautiful simply because the color of their skin is not white and because they do not fit the eurocentric model of what beauty is then there is a problem in our society.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Also, I don't believe a 4 year old child of ANY race should be thinking they are less beautiful than any other race. That type of thinking will seriously effect their lives in a negative way. So yes, to answer your question, I do think men who judge by skin color alone are racist and they have a lot of issues to work out within themselves as well.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 I agree. But why is it ok for people to accept that black or mixed race people are more athletic than their white peers, or more musically inclined? I would say that there is a lot of eveidence for these arguments, but why are they not considered racist? It seems that if a black person has abilities that a white person doesn't it is "fact" Whereas if a white person has abilities or attributes that a black person doesn't it is "institutionalised racism"? Let's be fair for once!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 If you want to make that argument I suggest you find a video that supports the claims you stated. This video has nothing to do with race and athleticism or race and singing ability. I want people to stop making generalizations and to stop accepting the ones they here. As a racially conscious individual I don't believe any stereotype I hear about any race and I don't appreciate you talking to me as if I did.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 There are certain facts about racial differences that if we do not accept, we will never be able to get past. If we can not get past these facts, we will never really conquer racism. It sounds like you would argue that we are all the same colour too! Generalisations are just that; "general" there are always exceptions, not all generalisations are based on fact but some are. This issue is a broad one, but it seems you only want to focus on the small part of it that suits you! Shame.
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Alright then, tell me one racial difference you believe to be true and why.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Black or mixed race people are more athletic. You need only watch any major sport to find supporting evidence of this.
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Don't you think the disproportional amount of black people in the athletic world could be a result of social issues? I mean think about it. There are way more white people in college right? I think if black people would have had the opportunity to succeed academically from the very beginning we'd be looking at a very sports world. Also what sports do black people dominate in? Hockey? No. Basketball and football are relatively cheap sports to pick up.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 B-ball, soccer, NFL, boxing, sprinting, long distance running, rugby, the list is long. The argument for social issues is a good one, but then aren't a lot of supposed "race" issues actually "social" ones? I went to school with black children and believe me, they are faster runners! Is that a social issue? Even the black children with more money are were faster runners! I'm not trying to offend you, we both would like to see an end to racism, I just think you are ignoring certain facts
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 B-ball, soccer, football, boxing, running, rugby...all cheap sports to pick up as a child. I play rugby and all you need is a ball and some friends. And yes, exactly what I'm saying. Most race issues are nothing more than social issues. Did you go to school with every black child in the country?? So what if every black kid at your school was fast?
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Again, your statement hardly disproves my point! If black children had access to more expensive sports, perhaps they would excel at these too! There are plenty of poor white people in the world, I grew up without the hope of going to college and yet despite all my efforts, I still suck at sports! It seems like you condemn my generalisations but accept your own, not all black people are poor! I think that the girl in the video has the right to find whichever doll she wants prettier.
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Yes perhaps they would. And if more white and Asian people were forced to make a decision between sports and poverty in America there'd be more in the NFL and NBA is what i'm saying. What percentage of black kids who try actually make it to the pros?? More black kids than white kids try out so there are more in the game but still the number who make it is NOT as high as you would think. I don't think you sucking at sports is because you're white. Maybe you just suck at sports.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 It is nice that you view all races as the same but for skin colour. Commendable yes, but accurate, no. You have the right intentions but not the facts. Did you know, for example, that there are more people in China with an IQ considered "genius" than there are people at all in America. This is a racial trait. Did you know that Native Americans have a pronounced metatarsal structure which gives them exceptional balance? Again, a racial trait! Greyhounds are faster than bulldogs; genetic
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Genetically speaking skin color is one of the most arbitrary ways of classifying people. Did you know that there is more genetic variation within Africa than anywhere else on Earth? Yet you think it's okay to saddle black people with certain traits.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 So what would you claim then? "There are more genetic variations..." etc and yet we are all the same?? It is really coming across like you have an issue about racial inequality, but you don't accept that there are any differences other than skin colour. If you care so much about an issue, you should research it better! You seem to imply that poverty is a black issue and yet you are opposed to generalisations? It seems to me like your opinions are contradictory and ill-conceived.
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 I claim that 1) genetic variation alone does not have as big an influence on society as you are making it seem. Example: black athletic superiority in America. Not a genetic thing. 2) The most obvious genetic variation we know (skin color) is nothing to be ashamed of. Dark, light, in-between everyone should feel good about themselves.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 I absolutely concur! (Other than the genetic pre-disposition to athleticism, it seems you don't want to admit that there are advantages as well as disadvantages to being of a certain race) Other than that I take my hat off to you and wish you well in your goals, the world could do with more benevolent people!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Many black kids suck at sports too but you only want to notice the Kobes and the Reggie Bushes because they help you feel better about your lack of athletic ability as well as your outlandish thoughts about race. And I'm not making generalizations I'm making observations. You have to look at the country's history and current state to make sense of what we see around us.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 That girl in the video should also have the right to love herself and find beauty in herself no matter what. Four years old is too young to think you're ugly especially if it's just because you're black. Period.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 The girl in the video has an opinion, it is you that makes it a racial issue! Get over your heritage, you are not as disadvantaged as you would like to think!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 I never said I was disadvantaged. I'm fully aware of what I've been given which is exactly why I find it disheartening that this little girl does not. Opinions don't just materialize out of thin air. She might not be able to explain her thought process but there is something wrong here.
lilkk234 4 months ago
That's were individual differences come in. My brother was the fasted kid in the state. I'm slow as molasses and we come from the same gene pool! Those same kids who were fast at running at your school might be slower than a white or latino or Asian kid from another school district or country. I just don't think you have enough information to make such a huge claim.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Your own claims are pretty "huge", that a little girl who just happens to be black, states that a white doll is prettier, instead of being a mere opinion, to you it is a race issue. This is not the 1950s, we have come so far since then, why try and turn everything into an argument about inherent or institutional racism? Why not just do the best you can without making pre-emptive excuses for any future obstacles? Believe me, class will weigh far more heavily on your future than race!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 I feel like you are ignoring the important part. THE DOLLS WERE THE EXACT SAME! She said the doll with the darker skin was ugly. Where does a child (a dark skin child at that) get the impression that darker skin is uglier? Also she clearly identifies herself as the "ugly" doll. Do you understand the type of damage that would have on a child's psyche? She thinks she is ugly. No man woman or child should have that opinion of themselves.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Plenty of people white, black, purple or whtever consider themselves ugly. Maybe the little girls thinks the lighter COLOUR is prettier without it being to do with race! You had the opportunity to attend college, I did not, but I'm not going to try and claim it is because of my race! It is because of my socio-economic level i.e class. The media is obsessed with beauty which breeds negative self image in children OF ALL RACES! Why try and claim every hardship as exclusively black?
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 The definition of race is: Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics. So for her to find darker skin inherently uglier...yeah it is a racial thing. Do you think it's okay for her to think she's uglier than her light or white counterparts? If your daughter, sister, mother, or some other female you loved thought they were naturally ugly for some trivial reason would you just go "Well that's your opinion" or
lilkk234 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 or would you try to convince them otherwise? Young girls who don't value themselves let other people take advantage of them. Would you be okay with that if it were you're daughter? And yes I agree the media does some fucked up things to children of ALL races not exclusively black children, but I go to a Nigerian church and I only have access to black children. But unlike yourself I don't deny they exist. I'd like to address them all and I'm sorry if I don't have the resources
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 OK, let me get this straight, I have a daughter who is nearly 10 years old, she has had the same pressure on her to be beautiful from the media as any other child, I resent your implication that it is a racial issue because that devalues the suffering she and ALL children go through! I suppose you think mine or her life is easier because we are white? That is about as racist as you can get! I do not deny the existance of racism, but class problems are not exclusively black problems!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 Are you trying to say that there are no struggles that are unique to certain groups of people? I do believe there are issues that effect all young girls, i,e weight, fashion, breasts and beauty in general. But when it comes down to something like skin COLOR that IS a racial thing because only certain races have to deal with it.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Sometimes it is a disadvantage to have white skin you know!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 to do that just yet but someday I will. The entire country has a long way to go before it can be completely rid of social ills like racism.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Again, I commend your goals they are honourable, but wouldn't it be better to tackle class issues rather than race? That way you will not be excluding people on the grounds of race! I think you have a good heart, but I also think you are a little misled.
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 I would call it a class issue if it was about class. But it's not. It's about race. Children of all social classes from the same race are turning out the same response.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@lilkk234 Your too hung up on race, I hope it doesn't prevent you from being able to help ALL of the people who need it!
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@lilkk234 OK, so according to you, if a black person excels at something (the athletic argument) then it is about class. If a black person is disadvantaged it is about race?
DonaldNice100 4 months ago
@DonaldNice100 A disadvantaged youth with little hopes of succeeding in anything but sports would no doubt exert ten times more energy than the average kid trying to make it athletically. Which is what we see when we watch ESPN. It's not all genetics.
lilkk234 4 months ago
very different* sports world.
lilkk234 4 months ago
@alexcowart interesting theory. In my experience, those people who don't see this as a problem tend to be those who think racism doesn't exist or prefix comments like yours with "i'm not racist but....I have black friends so I can't be racist....." I am black and I was racist to my own race and I didn't find black people attractive. I would also research conditioned responses of children and critical faculty development. If you were more informed, I doubt you would be so naive with your post
CoachChrisfitness 1 year ago
