I appreciate what you are doing to help make the non-Japanese music world aware of the possibilities of tsugaru shamisen, and Japanese music in general. I particularly enjoy the spirit of fun, adventure, and experimentation that I hear in your offerings on YouTube. Bravo! Keep up the good work!
I almost did not want to like this because visually you were clearly not Japanese. I felt the traditional essence would just not be there. I was totally wrong.
@wiferekr thanks for watching. I am actually half Japanese although I am a U.S. citizen. I grew up in northern Japan (parents working on American military base) and didn't acually come to the USA until after I had turned 18. I play Tsugaru Shamisen which is native to Aomori prefecture where I spent my first 18 years. anyway appreciate the comment !
That's absolutely beautiful and I think the Yoshida brothers would compliment him or he them. Shamisen players seem to play off of each other...like banjos, only better! :D
Yoshida Brothers....they can play the shamisen fine, but thier "rock" music makes me sad. They, and may be you, abukasolah, don't seem to know what's happnening in the 21st Century music world.
i don't think it's sad, i think it's wonderful. if it wasn't for the modern sound, a lot of people would never even think about shamisen. they are introducing it to a generation that has long forgotten it.
Well think of it like this. Comparing a Shamisen with a Banjo is like.... A flute to a Recorder. Two completely different instraments and fans/players of each get a bit defensive when they perceive a slight against it. (I know you wrote this comment about three months ago and probably have forgotten about it but sometimes I just can't keep my mouth shut. XDD)

Sometimes I wonder if just about any competent 5 string banjo player could blow these Shamisen players out of the water. It seems like a lot of effort for not much of a return, musically speaking.
WHAT!? jambon57, DO you realize that a statement such as what you made cannot be viewed as anything but a challenge... ok, I accept what you say under ONE condition, Name any 5 string banjo tune. ANY TUNE! Think of the hardest one you know, and I promise you I will not only master it on Shamisen but will play it better than any banjo player on earth!
just wondering if anyone could recreate the Pirates of the Caribbean them song, 'He's a Pirate' using a shamisen. I was stunned by the guitar version n\ seeing that your up for a challenge. (IMHO)
I have no doubt that you would do a masterful job on any 5 string banjo tune. But, how would you be able to sound the additional two notes if the song required five notes be played concurrently? Would you jam a couple of extra itomaki into your tenjin? Then again, a shamisen demon such as yourself would simply evoke the needed notes from the netherworld at will. ;)

Canadians...The USA wastes so much money protecting your border for not much of a return.People who eat vinegar on their fries have bad taste anyway. Are you a competent 4 or 5 string banjo player. Stick to fiddles dumb ass.
umm... I don't think you would come up with the same statement if you have a deeper understanding of the instrument. Yo-yo ma was good at the cello (4 strings) but he struggled with the Morin Khuur (2 strings) and both are bowed strings play in almost the same position. i think each instrument has its own difficulty.

cool that it's introducing peeps to classical music forms;bad that the classical form itself is fading into the sunset that is westernized pop music.

Actually, the thought of you on stage with Earl Scruggs...I want to see that show!
It would also be fun to see what he could do with a Tsugaru Bushi on his 5-string.
