One of the best first five minutes to a movie ever filmed! They really did not follow the book that well, though. For those who never read it, Abraham Lincoln was aboard the ironclad in the book.
I can't believe this film was one of the biggest financial failures... i was actually very impressed with this, it had everything. clearly a hell of alot of people saw differently. i say saw...
@kamikazeboy123 i have to disagree with you, it was adventurous, comical. fantastic. i loved the casting. it really was an overall great film. the civil war story and the beginning were the icing on the cake, personally as history enthusiast myself, it was really good icing.
@generaltodd2 Boxes of Confederate gold dollars, in real history there was only 5 confederate gold dollars made. But this movie says that the Confederates loaded an Iron Clad with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of gold dollars, then crossed the ocean and crashed in Africa
The ironic thing is these ships were brilliant because enemy fire bounced off and they could ram wooden ships. However there was a slight problem when the enemy had on, battles could rage for hours and sometimes both ships would retreat with minimal damage.
What i'd like to know is how these ships (specifically the css texas) would fare up against the aging and slowly outdating 1st rate ships of the line (such as the hms victory).
@nairda55555 you would be intrested to know that when iron clad ships thought eachother the battle would go on fore many hours they just keep shooting untill they all out of amunition the shots would just bounch of eachother
But considering a heavy first rate has 120 guns and about 500x times the ammunition supply of an iron clad this would be a true test of steel plate durability.
i mean sure a single plate or armor can deflect 1 or 2 shots wihtout leaving a dent, but how would it handle a dozen cannoballs simultaneously bearing down on it again and again and again?
The HMS Victory would probably not fare well since the CSS Texas was steam powered, armored and capable of ramming. However, there were iron hulled, ocean going "blue water" ships of the 1860s like HMS Warrior and USS New Ironsides that could outfight shallow water and coastal rams like CSS Texas, Memphis, Atlanta and numerous other rams that were not designed for the high seas.
I've made a mistake of what I said about todays ships lol. But as I was trying to say earlier todays ships compared to the Iron Clads are not as tough, this video short of demonstrated how few of the cannons just bounced of the sides lke it had no power.
The only problem back then for those ships was that they had no power to get-up-and-go from their steam engines.
@FatalWolf93 Looks like i have to repeat it for the third time, its called SAHARA.But let me remind you, this is the only scene your gonna see the ironclads in action.the rest will be present day fighting.wanna know more, juz go to wikipedia.

Now these, are real tough ships!
These ships started the trend today of having iron than wood.
