Ballard's hilarious! "I'm not saying I wanna write a tune with you, that's not what im askin" Oh really Glen? You mean like every other production you've had a hand in! Glen Ballard writes the tunes he produces. He may only get co-writing credit...but trust me he writes 'em. He's then super slick at convincing the artist that they are 1. an artist and number2. that they wrote it!! He's the ultimate mediator for label heads who only want to find the next piece of crap with a halter top on!
I think this is more about a power struggle. The "big guys" weren't used to having somebody who knew exactly what they wanted for and from their own music... they weren't used to meeting true "big guys"... it makes me wonder how many more people are out there, being stuffed around and ultimately turned away, day in and day out. People who write from the heart, whose passion is to share music with the world, music that speaks for and touches the very soul.
@carobutton It's not a pwr struggle per se. It's more about what is NOT said. Not one dude at their label has the guts to tell em the truth- "we don't want anyone with opinions or talent! We want pre-fabricated chix who we can manipulate-write tunes for and sell." Ballard's a punk, the label guy's a geek. Doesnt anyone realize music biz aint about music at ALL anymore. It's much more similar to the porn industry-except those CEO's have more education on what their consumers want.
@8sondy7 You can get that one. The hanson site (hanson.net) has the Documentary DVD/CD set you can buy the CD has a lot of the songs that you hear on here that never made it to an album like My Own Sweet Time, Breaktown and Dream Girl :) all great songs.
@crazybitchaaos i was thinking the same thing. he says it in such a patronizing way, you can't help but laugh. i can just see what he's thinking - "dude, seriously, fuck off. we're the musicians, not you" love it.
they should release an album with like all the rejected songs all the songs that guy didnt like. i think that would really stick it to him. and i would soo buy that album!
Never trust a wealthy big time Producer when he says (Ballard)"...its okay man, its all in due confidence", and then he continues the B.S. in the Studio and his talks with the Band... until he tattle-tales to Cohen. Doesnt matter if you have Wealth and a Resume, you can still act like a child. Where as these "young" guys have been nothing but professional and KNOW whats right for them.
Haha, these guys should be Proggers or Metal Heads :P -MAVIII(prOgulus . c O m)
I think Hanson should make a CD or two... or three of all the "rejects". I know it would cost some $, but I'm sure all the true hard-core hanson fans would buy them, fuck all who thinks it shit. Hanson is Hanson, and Hanson makes music that Hanson likes. And Hanson is talented, and think that would be a great idea.
Its interesting Glenn would say he didnt want things to get too deep after he makes Jaged little pill with Alanis and she goes off saying Glenn is my kindred spirit and what not.
Maybe they had two songs with the word "break" in them because they were telling themselves on a subconscious level that they should break from their label...
that guy (ballard) in the begining when they are talking about jeff and tay says I don't want to say to much...and ballard goes oh no man it's all...condfidential...ya...right..right there was when my trust was broken.
what i love about these guys is that when the record company tries to screw them over and turn them into what they aren't, they stand up for themselves and fight back, even though they are so young.
thank god there are some musicians who stand up for music.
That's something I love so much about the boys...They know what they want and they achieve the goal they wanted.
I'm honestly very proud of them and they show me, that it is possible to get to the point you want, if you show courage in the right moments and if you be true to yourself.
taylor is just so calm even he's mad.

no, it would have been wasted on that album. but seriously, they need to just release an album of like "the lost songs"
