  • I don't know too much about music(reading and so forth), However I was in a choir, and we did vespers 6 and 7, and that note at the end, whatever it was is certainly tough. My tricks are get absolutely piss drunk the night before (at the legal alcohol drinking age) and take a short sleep before the performance. Rests the vocal chords and your ready to go. Russians, and other Europeans just have this extra low range and I would kill for the projection they have.

  • This is the recording I have of Rach. Vespers-it is fabulous! It sounds better from my CD (considerably) than it does here on youtube, but you can still get a sense of the excellence of the choir and the majesty of the song. Much better than the Robert Shaw Chorale- for this piece.

  • this is how Heaven sounds like. can't hear this without crying..

  • Addendum: This is my favorite recording of this work. There are other great recordings out there but this tops them all.

  • The entire All-Night Vigil is a work of pure genius and inspiration. You can't listen to this...really listen to it...and not be touched.

  • If you listen closely, I believe there is a bass trying to hit a double low F at the end. Anyone else hear this?

  • For those who consider Rachmaninov bombastic, backward and repetitive, these beautiful works should set them straight!

  • This one is by far my favorite.

  • This is beautiful.

  • the low added suspension i believe is the maj 3rd of the chord

(on the score it should be an A natural, but since the choir dropped in pitch sounded much more like a G natural)..scientific studies confirm..thats pretty fucked up

  • Pff.. the whole choir drops almost 1 tone till the end, but anyways, sounds pretty good :)

  • the final pitch written is an F, which makes the idead that they'd but a low B natural under it ridiculous. Its likely The same B flat they sang in the previous movement.

  • this was magnificent!

  • Thank you very much for the videos!

    What language is this?

  • @MichaelJLgs19p

This is Church Slavonic - Old Russian, so to say

  • @VitaliyGR thanks mate

haha whichever tank of a bass put in the low B at the final suspension is a boss

To be a bit of a nit-picker, the choir's pitch starts only fractionally below A440, but drifts down to almost a semitone flat. The bass note you hear at the end is not in the score - Russian choir basses seem to like adding the octave below the penultimate note - in this case it's an actual low B natural. No prob!

  • @VitaliyGR Yes, and this happens in the previous movement too ( I think the alto soloist pulls it downwards there). The Bb at the end of it is very close to an A55. Astonishing! And may I just say: thank you for all this fabulous music you're introducing us to. It's quite new to me and really fabulous.

  • @VitaliyGR actually they sing the whole piece in E instead of F. they stay right on key the whole way through. also if you listen real real close you can hear a couple of the basses sing an E1 at the end; below the low B.

  • @VitaliyGR

I can't confirm or disprove your critique on the pitch.

However, the very beginning (As you mention) doesn't quite 'gel' with the rest! The result of a lack of playing the leading chord perhaps?

  • @VitaliyGR I enjoy reading the way your wonderful mind plays. Such giftedness. I wonder what other lovely things your brain gets to do with the grace of sensitivity and willingness to get out there with your preceptions..

They sang in between modern E and F Major right from the beginning of the song... I believe that it was on purpose: they probably used 19th century tuning where A4 (La of the 1st octave) was lower than 440Hz. It would be great to know about this issue right from maestro Polyansky...

I'm agnostic. But this movement brings be to tears every time, especially when imagining what it means to those who believe. Pure and simple beauty.

Lord, that suspension at 2:37 is enough to complete me.

My daughter's choir at Grinnell College has been working on this and will be singing it on their spring tour. It's nice to hear it as I won't be able to see them perform it.

  • Yes, masked a bit by other choral overtones. The lowest confirmed note sung by Russian octave basses is E-flat 1, and that's close to it :)

For me it is Our Lady's Assumption that comes to mind during this piece. Her witness accomplised she is reconciled into ultimate purity. AVE!

Thank you for posting the sheet music in parallel with the singing! My parish choir is trying to add this piece to our repertoire (in English) and we're having trouble staying together...we're not professionals, by any means...so this is very helpful.

I heard a performance of this piece at Smolny Cathedral when I was in the USSR way back in 1990. It was absolutely stunning.

    Actually it was F1... :-)

I was very fortunate to listen to that choir and THAT bass (!!!!!!!) at the concert in 1988 when I lived in Russia.

It's not an F because they're singing it in e minor - step lower than the score.

    Богородице Дево, радуйся,

    Благодатная Марие,

    Господь с Тобою.

    Благословенна Ты в женах,

    И благословен Плод чрева Твоего,

Яко Спаса родила, еси душ наших.

@model84 it is actually an f, but the old recording makes it be almost an e =) I'm sure they were low enoough to sing the e as well =)
