I don't know why people think this is so funny. I was in DC for the Rally to Restore Sanity this past weekend and something like this happened to me at the metro. There were about 100 people on the down escalator that was about three stories tall. The weight was too much and it broke, which made us all go crashing to the floor! It was going a lot faster than this escalator and it was TERRIFYING! I thought I was going to die! The emergency stop button wouldn't help because the brake was BROKEN!

When I saw this video it was like history happening again. In Portland OR. I was at one of the malls (Lloyd Center or Clackamas Town Center) doing some shopping. I was almost to the top of the UP escalator, when it started going backwards. Still more people tried to get on or people would try to run up *me included* the faster it would go down. Needless to say I FINALLY made it to the top,after running almost a 1/4 of a mile. It was scary especially when its YOU. It can happen ANYWHERE!!!

That's what happens when an escalator gets over loaded. Seen it happen in Canada. The system is in an up direction under tension then it breaks due to over loading so it should just stop but this one goes into a neutrual position and with the load it begins to travel backwards. Less resistance.
