forest fires arent because of that he said only pierex can do this and of course crystle balls. what causes fires is the bottom of the glass which like car reflectores are magnified
I did the same thing with a burned out lightbulb. Take the bulb apart through the base leaving the threaded portion and rinse out the coating (which is kaolin a type of clay) or just use a clear bulb. Works the same as your flask, but more fragile. You could make a stand for it and point the stem north tilted at an angle equal to your latitude. Now you've got a solar concentrator that doesn't require tracking of the sun. A cap for a coke bottle fits the threads on the bulb.
Hey Dan - Here's a similar experiment you could try. Take a bicycle rim, remove the spokes, and stretch a thin piece of clear plastic over it, held by a tight innertube. Add three legs for a tripod (may go up to five feet high). Then fill the plastic with water. It's weight will form a nice parabolic shape. Then you can burn holes in your lawn with the sun like I did.
that's why there is always forest fires in the americas because the people are throwing bottles with liquids in it and when the sunshine concentrated on this bottles it creates a magnifying effect and blaze into fire
so true, but still quite amazing. we take things for granted not realizing the awesome"ness" of water, air, light etc. we often feel powerless, but knowledge like this can be life changing. good and bad.
i agree its life changing for good or bad, but do we just tolerate the bad effect of forest fire that devastate many lives not only humans but powerless animals as well?
LOL

Of course not. If you've got ideas on how to prevent this devastation, I'm with you on that.

Good job on the vid.
You can also use a clear plastic bag as your container, if you don't have pyrex.
