Despite the fact that DD was waning on record sales, self management and keeping the group as tight as possible, there were "Cracks on the Pavement". It was 1988, following their "Notorious" album... "Big Thing" wasn't living up to the title itself. Don't get me wrong. The material offered were very good in terms of tempos of their songs; but the vast mayority hammered DD as if they were "Has-beens". I'm not that vast mayority, by the way... yet, I considered it an underrated album.

@daveski71 In a way I agree. The first three albums were collections of brilliant songs. Afterwards, Notorious onward.... it seemed each album had a "theme". Notorious the "funk" album... etc. They are Great albums don't get me wrong but they are not legendary albums like Rio. And again it didn't help that their label was ignoring them. A great video here got almost zero airplay on MTV.

@Syl17 Simon said it was the first of a trilogy of songs devoted to a friend he had who died named David Miles. Nick also claimed it for Andy Warhol and the band claimed it for Alex Sadkin who had recently died before Big Thing's production.

The other two songs in the David Miles Trilogy are Ordinary World and Out Of My Mind. Both beautiful songs too.

this song reminds me so very much of my dearly departed friend Lee Mueller who passed away at the age of 19. DD was his fave band and he looked so much like John Taylor himself. THe part that makes me break into tears even now is when it begins about "I cant believe that my friend is gone" andthe softness of SImon's voice. I miss my dear friend so much. Its been 26 years since his passing. a week before he died he got the postcard from simon and letter from simon's mum that i had made happen.
